$138 million were donated to the Obama Foundation by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The charity was made in honour of Congressman John Lewis, a hero of the US civil rights movement of the 1960s who died last year, the foundation said on Monday. In a statement Bezos said:

“Freedom fighters deserve a special place in the pantheon of heroes, and I can’t think of a more fitting person to honour with this gift than John Lewis.”

Bezos has asked that the plaza at the Obama Presidential Centre be named the John Lewis Plaza, as part of the gift, said the foundation in a statement.
