After two years of lackluster results, the games division, Nuverse, significantly scaled back operations, surprising many employees.

“We regularly review our businesses and make adjustments to center on long-term strategic growth areas. Following a recent review, we’ve made the difficult decision to restructure our gaming business,” a ByteDance spokesperson told TechCrunch in a statement.

The round of mass layoffs began today and many Nuverse employees are awaiting a decision on their future. It is unclear how many employees will be affected by the restructuring. The unit employs about 3,000 people, according to Chinese tech news publication LatePost.

The value of ByteDance’s spending in recent years on acquisitions is in the billions of dollars. This includes a $4 billion purchase of a Shanghai studio called Moonton. Earlier this month, Reuters reported that the company wanted to sell the studio and had met for discussions with another Saudi Arabian company.

ByteDance’s struggles in the video game industry, as well as its foray into virtual reality with Pico, raise questions about the broad effectiveness of its data-driven A/B testing approach that propelled TikTok to worldwide prominence. While ByteDance has accumulated an unparalleled wealth of consumer insights through its short video apps, the success of video games requires a more protracted and patient creative process, presenting a challenge distinct from the immediate satisfaction provided by dopamine-infused video clips. In contrast, competitors Tencent and NetEase are investing heavily in games with lengthier development cycles.

The extensive layoffs at Nuverse contribute to the ongoing challenges faced by the Chinese internet industry, which has been grappling with a pervasive regulatory crackdown in recent years. This has resulted in diminished business activities and workforce reductions across the sector, TechCrunch writes. The video gaming industry, in particular, experienced significant setbacks due to a pause in license approvals. Despite the resumption of the approval process, the sector’s recovery has been constrained by broader macroeconomic challenges.

Developers Demand $1 Billion in Compensation from Apple https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/07/25/developers-demand-1-billion-in-compensation-from-apple/ Tue, 25 Jul 2023 06:29:53 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=109419 ...]]> A class action lawsuit by 1,500 UK developers has been filed against Apple for damages worth up to £800 million, TechCrunch reports. The tech giant is accused of abusing its dominant position by charging a 30% “anti-competitive” fee on domestic sales made by app makers on its iOS app store.

The claim alleges that UK developers are being deprived of money that could be spent on research and development to drive innovation in apps.

The claim is a class action, and this means that UK-based developers do not have to register to be included in any profits. The amount of compensation for each developer will be calculated based on their iOS app business – so the amounts paid out can vary widely and in some cases can even run into millions of pounds.

For its part, Apple continues to reject accusations that it is profiting at the expense of developers. The company claims that the fees it charges allow it to provide iOS users with a premium experience, noting that store administration includes reviewing apps for security and privacy, among other quality checks.

Microsoft with Important Decision After Criticism Because of Hacker Attacks https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/07/20/microsoft-with-important-decision-after-criticism-because-of-hacker-attacks/ Thu, 20 Jul 2023 07:55:53 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=109276 ...]]> Microsoft will expand free cloud sign-up after recent hacking attacks, TechTarget reports.

Microsoft’s announcement is in response to criticism it has received regarding the lack of registration data for certain cloud services licenses. The criticism stemmed from a series of attacks by a China-based threat actor that broke into the email accounts of about 25 organizations, including several U.S. federal agencies.

The perpetrator of the threat, which Microsoft has named Storm-0558, used a stolen Microsoft System Account (MSA) key to forge access tokens that allowed the attacker to gain access to Outlook Web Access email accounts on Exchange Online and Outlook.com. The threat activity was originally discovered in June by an unnamed Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agency that reported the attack to Microsoft.

CISA noted that the FCEB agency was only able to detect the intrusion because it had enabled enhanced logging for its Microsoft 365 services, which provided the agency’s security team with relevant data about the compromised email accounts.

Eric Goldstein, who is executive assistant director for cybersecurity at CISA, wrote in a blog post that the agency has been working with Microsoft over the past few months to determine the types of logs needed to identify cyberattacks.

He said asking organizations to pay more for the required logging is “a recipe for inadequate visibility when investigating cyber security incidents”. It could allow bad actors to reach dangerous levels of success in attacks against U.S. organizations.

The Coin Flips: Spotify Deletes Thousands of Songs Created by Artificial Intelligence? https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/05/10/the-coin-flips-spotify-deletes-thousands-of-songs-created-by-artificial-intelligence/ Wed, 10 May 2023 08:05:17 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=105932 ...]]> A report by the Financial Times reveals that Spotify has removed 7% of all songs created by artificial intelligence-powered music startup Boomy, Coin Telegraph reports. Spotify is also said to be tightening control of the platform in light of the situation, and the battle between the music industry and artificial intelligence continues.

The company’s decision to remove songs that are created by artificial intelligence comes after Spotify and other streaming services began receiving complaints of fraud and platform overload. According to the FT’s sources, music industry giant Universal Music Group has warned streaming service providers about “suspicious streaming activity” of Boomy tracks.

“Artificial streaming is a longstanding, industry-wide issue that Spotify is working to stamp out across our service.”

Spotify commented.

Representatives from Boomy were quick to comment, saying the platform is “categorically opposed” to any manipulation or artificial streaming of any kind.

“The recent explosive development of generative artificial intelligence, if unchecked, will increase the flow of unwanted content across platforms and create rights issues under existing copyright law.”

say the company.

Last month, UMG sent an email to streaming services, including Spotify, asking them to block AI services from accessing music catalogues for training purposes.

While music industry giants fight for control over AI, some artists, like Grimes, are taking the side of the innovative technology. It has allowed creators to use its voice in attempts to create AI music, but on the condition that certain rules are followed and royalties are split.

Venture Capital for European Ecosystems Reduced to €90 Million https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/01/20/venture-capital-for-european-ecosystems-reduced-to-e90-million/ Fri, 20 Jan 2023 08:10:37 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=98834 ...]]> Pitchbook’s annual dataset shows that venture capital for European ecosystems was slightly lower last year, down to €91.6m from a record €108.9m in calendar year 2021, tech.eu reports.

Overall, 65.6% of the total deal value came from late-stage venture capital funding rounds and “venture growth” rounds (the latter is a new pitchbook classification introduced to capture mid- and later-stage activity). But this is a small increase from 64.8% in 2021.

The value of foreclosures reached the third highest level on record (€38.3 million) despite the worsening economic conditions and lower valuations, but the more difficult conditions are expected to continue this year. Unfortunately, exit values have fallen dramatically compared to last year (€137.7m) and according to Pitchbook 63 public IPOs have raised just €13.4bn. This trend is likely to continue into 2023, making the prospect of a corporate takeover a more enticing choice.

Can I Learn to Code Without a Computer? https://devstyler.io/blog/2022/02/02/can-i-learn-to-code-without-a-computer/ Wed, 02 Feb 2022 12:41:13 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=80218 ...]]> We often ask ourselves – can I learn to code without a computer? Well, actually you can. Going offline and teaching coding through hands-on activities makes the subject less intimidating and more interactive for students, said Extended Notes.

Here are some ways you can learn to do that without the presence of a computer.

First, you can achieve coding while playing board games. You can start with Robot Turtles. The game is focused on teaching the basics of programming to early learners using code cards. Playing not only Robot Turtles, but other games can actually be an easy and very effective way to combine learning offline with fun.

Second, you can always code a LEGO maze. It teaches you how to think like a programmer. There are four levels of difficulty. Depending on the level, students will create a set of instructions, or commands, to guide the character through the maze as efficiently as possible.

Third way is to read Hello Ruby. The book tells a coding story and it represents an activity book into one package. Each chapter provides a small lesson in computational thinking as well as exercises that incorporate play and creativity.

Fourth, make binary bracelets. Binary code is the simplest form of computer code. The coding system uses 0 and 1 to represent a letter, digit or other character in a computer. This way learners can practice using binary code by making binary bracelets that represent their name. By the way, if you want to introduce coding to early learners, teaching binary code is a great way, according to Extended Notes.

Number fife goes to teaching a robot to stack cups. This activity from Thinkersmith challenges students to create a series of instructions, or an algorithm, for how a “robot” should build a cup stack. It also helps students to learn how to convert real-world activities into instructions.

Christmas Eve becomes a deadline for a hack to be fixed https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/12/16/christmas-eve-becomes-a-deadline-for-a-hack-to-be-fixed/ Thu, 16 Dec 2021 13:33:46 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=76871 ...]]> Federal agencies were ordered to protect their systems against a major computer vulnerability by Christmas Eve. The deadline for the security patches was set by CISA – The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

Log4Shell was called one of the most serious security vulnerabilities during the past decade. Jen Easterly, who is a CISA head, called it “a severe risk”. Not only that but Microsoft also warned that some of the hacking groups are using Log4Shell.

The company explained that most of the tracked nation-state activity groups which are originating from China, Iran, North Korea, and Turkey, were using the vulnerability for different kinds of activities such as doing experiments or targeting attacks.

CISA even added it to the “Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog”. It is a list which contains the most common security flaws that carry significant risk to the federal organization. That’s why the agency set a deadline (by December 24) for the federal civilian executive-branch to do its best in order to mince the problem with the IT systems patched with new softwares.

John Graham-Cumming, who is Cloudflare’s chief technical officer, told BBC:

“For example, when you buy something online, your username might be written to a log file for later processing. Unfortunately, a flaw in Log4j meant that by using special characters in data that is logged, it is possible to get a machine inside a company to run code that an attacker controls. This gives them a foothold inside what would normally be a secure, protected computer.”

Measures to protect its users from the vulnerability were taken by Cloudflare – a company that provides internet security and other services which are meant to help online businesses operate smoothly.

Experts were reported “estimated months to years of finding new instances of this vulnerability across enterprises and vendors” by security news site SC Media.

Companies were called on to install the latest updates immediately wherever Log4j is known to be used, by The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre.

SkyPallet’s Software is being enhanced by Wiremind https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/11/25/skypallet-s-software-is-being-enhanced-by-wiremind/ Thu, 25 Nov 2021 14:27:25 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=75545 ...]]> SkyPallet counts over 1,200 users in 100 countries. It offers several service modules that can be used both together or individually. Now Wiremind customized its Skypallet ULD as well as the flight optimisation system.

Thanks to the SkyPallet’s 3D Volume Calculator, the actual quantity of a non-standard shipment would be easily detected, giving information about how much space would be occupying given available capacity options. The 3D shipment visualisation can be shared with all involved parties.

To optimize capacity utilisation, a ULD build-up sequence is provided by SkyPallet’s Flight Planning module. Recently, this module was promoted with a new visual build-up plan feature that caters to the specific needs of flight planners and GHAs. It can easily calculate whether an incoming shipment would fit on the flight, using dimension assumptions when the final details are not fully known.

When it comes to the trim of the flights, it is ensured by the SkyPallet’s Weight & Balance module. Its algorithm takes into account trimming requirements and carries out the weight and density checks in order to ensure the aircraft’s centre of gravity (CG) is properly positioned.

The average calculation time for a shipment in SkyPallet is under 4 seconds, and a full aircraft is calculated in less than 1 minute. Nathanaël de Tarade, who is a chief commercial officer at Wiremind, said:

“Our vision at Wiremind is to offer the ultimate end-to-end software solution to the air cargo market. In order to do that, we work closely with industry stakeholders who have a global vision and established cargo expertise, not just in operations and handling, but also in commercial, pricing, and inventory management. This industry knowledge, combined with our data-science intelligence, results in a unique supporting software solution that serves to greatly simplify the work of handlers, flight analysts, sales, reservation agents and operations in their daily tasks. They benefit from sharing the same data at all stages of the cargo process, from quotation to booking to build up to delivery. This not only speeds up software-supported decision-making but also largely reduces the risk of errors caused by faulty or multiple data inputs for the same shipment.”

In the coming months, Wiremind will be launching its new additional products whose aim is to help airlines and forwarders better manage their cargo activities.

The most famous programming languages and fastest growing choices for developers https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/11/18/the-most-famous-programming-languages-and-fastest-growing-choices-for-developers/ Thu, 18 Nov 2021 13:33:07 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=74961 ...]]> SlashData’s 21st State of the Developer Nation Report examined global software developer trends across 160 countries during Q3 2021, covering programming languages, tools, APIs , apps and technology segments, as well as attitudes of developers themselves.

The report also looked at developer involvement in 5G and IoT, specifically how programmers were taking advantage of new advances in technology in tools, apps and services.

JavaScript’s ongoing popularity in web and backend applications supported its position as the most popular programming language in Q3 2021. SlashData found that upwards of 2.5 million developers had joined the JavaScript community and more than 16.4 million are using it globally.

The popularity of Python is also impressive. According to SlashData, the language is now used by some 11.3 million coders, primarily within data science and machine learning, and IoT applications.

Python’s popularity has exploded in recent years, overtaking that of Java, which is currently used by 9.6m developers. Java remains a go-to for mobile and desktop apps, SlashData’s survey found.

According to SlashData, Python added 2.3m developers to its community in the past 12 months.

“That’s a 25% growth rate, one of the highest across all the large programming language communities of more than 7M users,” the report noted.

The top five most popular languages were C/C++ (7.5m developers), PHP (7.3m) and C# (7.1m). SlashData reported, PHP has grown the fastest over the past six months acquiring one million new developers. Like JavaScript, PHP remains popular for Web and backend applications.

Rust is another programming language that has been making waves in recent years. The open-source programming language is mostly used in embedded software and ‘bare metal’ development, although has also found a home in AR and VR game development.

SlashData’s report found that developers are increasingly getting involved in 5G projects, particularly those related to IoT (Internet of Things), AR (Augmented reality)/VR (Virtual Reality), consumer electronics, and machine learning/AI (Artificial intelligence).

China was found to be the epicentre of 5G developer activity.
