iOS 18 makes iPhone 16e more personal, capable, and intelligent than ever. With more customization options, users can give apps and widgets a new dark or tinted look and arrange them in any open space on the Home Screen. The controls at the bottom of the Lock Screen can be customized; Control Center has been redesigned to provide users with easier access to many of the things they use every day, including third-party apps; and new privacy protections include the ability to lock and hide apps to protect sensitive apps and the information inside them. iOS 18 also provides powerful updates for staying connected. In Messages, users can use text effects to bring words, phrases, sentences, and more to life. Tapbacks expand to include emoji, Genmoji, or stickers, and now users can schedule a message to send later. When messaging contacts who do not have an Apple device, the Messages app now supports RCS for richer media and more reliable group messaging when compared to SMS and MMS.

Better for the Environment

iPhone 16e is designed with the environment in mind. As part of Apple 2030, the company’s ambitious goal to be carbon neutral across its entire carbon footprint by the end of this decade, Apple is transitioning to renewable electricity for its manufacturing, and investing in wind and solar projects around the world to address the electricity used to charge all Apple products, including iPhone 16e. Today, all Apple facilities run on 100 percent renewable electricity — including the data centers that power Apple Intelligence.

To achieve Apple 2030, the company is designing products with more recycled and renewable materials, which further drives down the carbon footprint. iPhone 16e features over 30 percent recycled content overall, including 100 percent recycled cobalt and 95 percent recycled lithium in the battery, 85 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure, and more. Additionally, the main logic board and back glass of iPhone 16e are designed to be manufactured more efficiently, reducing the amount of raw materials needed. The packaging is also entirely fiber-based, bringing Apple closer to its goal of removing plastic from its packaging by the end of this year.

Pixel 5a and beyond: 2 big questions about Google’s future Pixel plans https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/08/23/pixel-5a-and-beyond-2-big-questions-about-google-s-future-pixel-plans/ Mon, 23 Aug 2021 11:22:00 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=67209 ...]]> After months of leaking, seeking, and geeking, Google’s latest and greatest Pixel phone is finally here.

The Pixel 5a, as we’ll refer to it henceforth, made its way into the world via a fittingly low-key announcement earlier this week. The phone will start shipping in the U.S. and Japan a week from today, on August 26th.

This isn’t the 2021 Pixel everyone’s really excited about. That’s the Pixel 6, which is the two-model beaut with a striking new design, a host of fresh camera capabilities, and a homemade Google processor that could introduce some incredibly interesting new elements into the equation. This Pixel, in comparison, is pretty ho-hum. It’s understated and unexciting. And strange as it may sound, that’s all very much part of what makes it appealing.

With its $449 price tag, the Pixel 5a is one hell of a value. I’ve been using a loaner review unit of the device for the past several days, and it really is as solid of an all-around Android experience as you could possibly ask for. It’s pretty much everything anyone has ever asked for in a phone of this price — impressive performance, an exceptional screen, better-than-ever battery life, and a best-in-class camera setup paired with pure Google software and an unmatched guarantee of timely and reliable operating system updates. Plus, it even has a premium-feeling body, with a sleek metal casing, and the rare gem of a headphone jack, to boot.

When you look at the Pixel 5a from a holistic all-around-experience and value perspective, it’s painfully clear that nothing else in this price range even comes close. And there’s not much negative to be said about the thing beyond the fact that it lacks some of the higher-priced niceties its flashier flagship-level cousins can offer.

As we ponder the latest dizzying shift in what the Pixel brand represents and where it fits into the greater Android ecosystem, these questions will get us mulling over some important points about what’s next and where things go from here.

Pixel question No. 1: What will next year’s Pixel ‘a’ model be like?

The flagship Pixels may be the most exciting devices to drool over and the subject of all of our Googly geek lust, but out in the real world, the Pixel “a” phones are the ones most phone-seeking mammals are actually buying. Year after year, signs consistently suggest that the more modest, lower-priced Pixel “a” options are moving at a pretty nice pace while the higher-priced Pixel flagships remain mostly niche products. Тhis year, the Pixel 5a follows an awkward season where we saw two Pixel “a” phones — seemingly the result of a last-minute pandemic-caused shuffle. And consequently, this year’s Pixel “a” phone looks and feels like a subtle hop forward from last year’s eerily similar Pixel 4a 5G.

The upcoming Pixel 6, meanwhile, has a whole new visual language and feels like a reinvention of what the Pixel brand represents. Perhaps most critically, it also has that homemade Google chip— which should go a long way in setting the phone apart in both its capability and its capacity for long-term support.

The Pixel “a” domain will definitely be a place worth watching as the current Pixel evolution continues. And that brings us to the second big Pixel question…

Pixel question No. 2: How long ’til we get the Pixel ‘b’ line?

Up until this year, the Pixel “a” phone had been on the upper-end of the budget level. The original Pixel “a” model, 2019’s Pixel 3a, sold for $399 at the time of its launch. Last year’s regular Pixel 4a follow-up brought that price down to $349.

Both of those phones were built to be affordable, with lower-end internals and a pleasant but noticeably plastic build in place of the glass or aluminum exteriors higher-end phones tend to have. The Pixel 5a, meanwhile, essentially takes the place of last year’s Pixel 4a 5G, with its higher-end internals, aluminum build, and more midrange-level price tag to match.

So if the Pixel 5a is more of a midranger — the 2021 equivalent of last year’s in-betweener 4a 5G offering — is Google gonna supplement that spot with a firmly budget-level alternative in 2022?

Google made no secret of the fact that it wants the Pixel to become a significant player in terms of its overall market share. And both Google’s own past stats and the general smartphone market trends make it undeniable that the low-priced level is where those gains are most easily made.

For now, Google has said it “hopes” to continue selling last year’s Pixel 4a for as long as it can secure all of the necessary parts. But that’s clearly not a long-term solution, and it comes with the caveat for potential purchasers that the phone’s already a full year into its life and thus down to less than two years of remaining support.

Things sure are getting interesting here in the land o’ Googly matters, and all signs suggest what we’re seeing right now is still only the start of the story.

This Long-Awaited Technology May Finally Change the World https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/07/26/this-long-awaited-technology-may-finally-change-the-world/ Mon, 26 Jul 2021 09:48:06 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=61553 ...]]> There is a technology currently undergoing testing that, when released, will become a long-awaited revolution in energy. This new technology will affect that which we consider mundane — power tools, toys, laptops, smartphones, medical devices, spacecraft, and the innovative new vehicle designs needed to wean us off of fossil fuels. We have known about this technology for centuries, yet until now we have only been able to take small steps towards its creation.

This description is referring to the upcoming innovations in the realm of battery technology — specifically that of solid-state batteries. And while both fusion power and solid-state batteries have been labelled technologies of the future but never of today, advancements and investments in solid-state materials have increased tremendously over the years. Today not only are there many major companies and credible researchers involved, but it also seems we may finally start seeing these batteries released in just the next few years.

A simplified diagram shows the liquid electrolyte of conventional batteries and the solid electrolyte of solid-state batteries.

Batteries are nothing more than devices that store chemical energy and convert it into electrical energy. They have four main parts: the cathode, anode, electrolyte, and separator. The cathode and anode are the electrodes.

What is important here is that there is one main difference between our current batteries and the solid-state batteries of the future: the electrolyte. Current lithium-ion batteries have a liquid electrolyte. Unfortunately, certain compounds present in the liquid electrolyte allow for the growth of crystalline structures known as dendrites. The dendrites produce long, sharp whiskers that can puncture the separator and cause short-circuiting, consequently leading to dangerous explosions. Solid-state batteries have a solid electrolyte that inhibits the growth of these harmful dendrites. Not to mention something astounding happens once the electrolyte is switched from liquid to solid.

The battery has a higher energy density, the risk of fires and explosions is greatly reduced, it takes up less space, and it is able to operate in a wider range of temperatures. Let’s take a look, for example, at what this would mean for vehicles.

By far the largest drawback of electric vehicles today is their limited driving range. An average electric vehicle will get a range of 250–300 miles (402–483 km) on a full charge. Fully charging the vehicle takes anywhere from an hour to 17 hours depending on whether the vehicle is charging at a station or using a standard outlet at home. Yet electric vehicles are expected to continue growing in popularity, eventually dominating the automotive sector. To reach this point they will need to expand their range to at least 450 miles (724 km) while remaining affordable to the consumer.

Here are the solid-state batteries

The driving range of electric vehicles becomes double or triple the current number. Companies can choose between making a smaller, lighter battery that charges faster or leaving the battery the same size with a much more extensive range. Charge times are reduced to just 15 mins. If we look at Samsung’s advancements in solid-state batteries we see they were able to develop a battery that can be charged and discharged over 1,000 times with a range of 500 miles (805 km) per charge. This is a battery life of 500,000 miles. And all while being able to operate efficiently in more extreme temperatures.

Something like this could be the end of gas-powered vehicles. For laptops and smartphones, it means the devices could last days on a single (very fast) charge, with the overall lifespan of the battery increasing from just 2 years to over 10. Medical devices could become more portable and compact while the larger temperature range means solid-state batteries could have applications in future space technology.

This potential has not escaped the attention of powerful companies. Volkswagen, Ford, BMW, Hyundai, Toyota, and Bill Gates have all invested billions of dollars into solid-state research. Toyota is planning a limited release of vehicles with solid-state batteries by 2025. And yet the most exciting breakthrough comes from someone you’ve probably never heard about.

CeraCharge makes solid-state batteries the size of a grain of rice.

A research team led by physicist John Goodenough has submitted a patent for glass and a ceramic solid-state battery that is stable, non-flammable, offers faster charging, and has 3 times more energy storage than a regular lithium-ion battery. This was achieved by adding sodium or lithium to form an electrode in the battery. Equally as important, the battery is affordable and is estimated to last over 2,000 charge and discharge cycles. The operating temperature range for the glass battery is between -4º F and 140º F (-20º C and 60º C).

Goodenough himself is no ordinary scientist. He’s won 8 scientific awards, including the Nobel Prize in chemistry. His past world-changing innovations include the original lithium-ion battery and the RAM needed to make your computer run. His involvement — along with the involvement of many major competing companies — have put the solid-state battery well within our reach. We may begin to see the limited release of this technology in just 3 or 4 years, though it is difficult to say when it will achieve wider release to the public.

The battery represents a lot more than just convenience. It represents a key element in saving the world. More capable electric vehicles can provide a drastic shift in the automotive market — a shift away from more emission-heavy gas vehicles. Solid-state batteries may also be produced with earth-friendly materials like the very sodium found in our plentiful ocean water. But perhaps more than anything, the arrival of solid-state batteries will represent the capabilities of our most brilliant minds: the capability to make real a technology we’ve known about for centuries and dreamt about for decades. It does not forever have to remain a technology of the future, but can be the technology of today.

How Software-Based Data Collection Benefits the Auto Industry https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/07/20/how-software-based-data-collection-benefits-the-auto-industry/ Tue, 20 Jul 2021 12:17:42 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=60246 ...]]> The truth is, we live in a data-driven world. And one of the biggest advantages of using software to collect data in the automotive industry is the ability to adjust the manufacturing process in real-time, using your own valuable data. This supports more accurate decision-making that ultimately improves product quality and lowers costs.

Quality is positively impacted by the timeliness of issue detection. Should a problem arise that needs to be addressed, the software can instantly detect it and send alerts. This allows operators and workers to make changes on the fly, as opposed to manually recording the situation and then realizing hours or days later there was an issue that needed to be corrected. As a result, less scrap is produced in the manufacturing process, in turn bringing down the overall cost to manufacture the product.

Common alerts related to manufacturing issues include those around worn tools that require adjustments, whether that means replacing a tool or doing a machine tool offset to help keep the process stable. If there’s a tooling or materials issue that causes things to go awry, automatics alerts help reduce wasted materials and shed greater light on the state of the manufacturing process.

The difference between Bluetooth and traditional wireless data collection

A traditional U-WAVE wireless system uses a Zigbee protocol, which is a widely used global standard. It acts as more of an industrial wireless system, given the low instance of interference, noise or competition with other nearby frequencies. It also provides a stable connection over a long measuring range, with excellent battery life (it’s not uncommon to get around 400,000 transmissions from a single battery.)

One requirement is that this protocol has historically been tethered to a Windows operating system. That means having to carry a Windows tablet or a Windows laptop with you to work to access the system.

Now, however, there is a Bluetooth version of the U-WAVE system that complements traditional wireless. This uses a standard Bluetooth protocol, which can communicate with both Android and iOS operating systems. It allows anyone to send data to their smartphone or tablet, making it easier to conduct measurements, especially if measuring something extremely large such as a vehicle, train car or aeroplane wing.

Data can be recorded and sent on the spot, improving mobility and ease of use.

How the auto industry can incorporate Bluetooth data collection?

With a Bluetooth system, there are free apps available for download via the app store and Google Play, as well as for Windows, to help optimize the Bluetooth measuring experience. The mobile apps have innate data collection built into them. Making the only investment needed for an automotive company a measuring tool and Bluetooth add-on.

For the automotive market, this makes it easy to share data and measurements regardless of what platform an auto manufacturer is using. With each application, it’s easy to share and export data to get it into the hands of quality engineers, manufacturing engineers, or other decision-makers that need the data.

And it looks as if Bluetooth will likely become the data collection standard in the auto industry, as well as other industries. This is due to increased demand from the operator side for the improved flexibility and freedom Bluetooth provides, whether measured on the manufacturing floor, measuring remade parts, or even measuring in a quality lab while not being tethered to a cable measuring device.

The days of taking measurements on a clipboard and handing them off to someone else are coming to an end.

Seamless software integration

Whether via Bluetooth, the Zigbee protocol or a wired measuring device, the good news is that quality software systems work well with all communication formats. Seamless integration provides for flexible data management and makes it easy to export data for sharing or opening in another format, such as Microsoft Excel.

This makes Bluetooth, integrated with software measuring systems, an ideal fit for data collection in the auto industry and, really, any industry manufacturing a product that needs to be measured. This includes oil and gas, where item traceability is key. It also includes aerospace and the medical industry, where keeping track of measurement data is critical for life-saving parts. As it has a detailed history and log of exact measurements for each component, Bluetooth optimizes the ability to collect such valuable data using measurement software.

Additionally, Bluetooth works seamlessly with all tools that have Digimatic output capability, from callipers and micrometres to hardness testers and laser scanners. Self-pairing Bluetooth transmitters with an operating system are as simple as downloading an app.

In addition, a Bluetooth transmitter can be IP-rated so that it meets certain criteria ensuring no physical or liquid contaminants enter and damage the equipment, either on the transmitter side of the measuring tool side. This ruggedness means they’re ideal for industrial environments.

Data will continue to drive the future of manufacturing and measurement. Embracing software-based data collection only serves to streamline operations and improve accuracy at a time when quality and productivity are both non-negotiable.

4 Best Computers for Programming https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/06/28/4-best-computers-for-programming/ Mon, 28 Jun 2021 11:10:36 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=56600 ...]]> When you are programming for a living, it pays to have a decent laptop or desktop for coding. Whether it is PHP, Java, C++, or any other computer language, the right device can make all the difference to getting work done.

When it comes to the best computers for coding, a good processor is a must. A decent amount of memory and a solid-state drive (SSD) for storage is essential to ensure your machine doesn’t slow you down when you need to be productive.

Here is a list of the best computers for programming.

Apple MacBook Air (M1, 2020)

MacBook Air laptops have been great in terms of lightness, making them easy to carry around all day. However, they have never been as fast as their MacBook or MacBook Pro siblings. That has all changed with the M1 chip’s arrival.

The M1 chip has eight cores for processing and another seven cores dedicated to graphics. Higher-spec models have up to eight cores dedicated to graphics. All the cores are integrated onto the same chip, and the memory is shared between the CPU and GPU cores. Battery life is around 11 hours, giving you plenty of life to finish a project without access to a power source. The Retina screen is crisp and clear, making long hours staring at a screen a lot more tolerable.

HP Spectre x360 (2021)

The HP Spectre x360 is a two-in-one laptop that can double as a tablet. This year, the laptop sports an 11th-generation Intel Core processor and Intel Iris Xe graphics. It is also made to the Intel Evo certification, meaning it reaches a certain level of responsiveness, performance, and battery life.

The laptop is slim, powerful, and will boot up quickly. With a battery life of around 13 hours, you don’t have to keep this plugged in when you are on the go, so you can code anywhere.

Dell XPS 13 (OLED, 2021)

The Dell XPS has undergone a bit of a transformation with its latest iteration. This device now boasts a high-resolution 13.4-inch, 3456-by-2160-pixel touchscreen OLED display.

However, what you gain with a great-looking screen, you lose in battery life, as it now lasts only about eight hours on a charge when most rivals last about 10 hours. Dell has also eliminated almost all of the bezel in this version, including the bezel below the screen

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 3 laptop

The entry-level device includes a 10th Generation Intel Core  i7-10750H Processor (2.60 GHz, up to 5.00 GHz with Turbo Boost, 6 Cores, 12 Threads, 12 MB Cache).

These ThinkPads come with either a 15.6″ FHD (1920-by-1080-pixel) IPS display on the entry-level laptop, or a 15.6″ UHD (3840-by-2160-pixel) OLED, anti-reflective, anti-smudge, touchscreen with Dolby Vision and HDR. These are powered by an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q 4GB graphics card.
