Europe – Devstyler.io https://devstyler.io News for developers from tech to lifestyle Mon, 22 Apr 2024 12:39:49 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.5 Microsoft Expands Data Center Capacity https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/04/22/microsoft-expands-data-center-capacity/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 12:39:49 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=124871 ...]]> Microsoft is looking to significantly expand the capacity of its data centers to serve the expected AI demand. The tech giant will triple the rate at which capacity is added as early as the start of the next financial year.

The boom in interest in mainstream models and generative AI is driving a surge in demand for additional computing power, as well as interest in training ever larger models.

According to documents available to Insider, Microsoft is preparing to address this by doubling Azure capacity in the second half of this fiscal year, which runs through the end of June.

Microsoft will triple additional data center capacity in the first half of its fiscal year 2025.

According to the aforementioned documents, the company is deploying a “record number of GPUs” to handle AI workloads, and more than doubled its total installed base of accelerators in the second half of last year.

Recall that Microsoft had intended last year to spend “many billions of dollars” building additional capacity in anticipation of the rapid increase in the number of customers looking to run generative AI projects.

By the end of 2023, Synergy’s data shows that the US accounts for 51% of global capacity as measured by MW of critical IT workload, Europe 17%, and China close behind with 16%.

The companies with the largest footprints are actually the big three cloud providers – Amazon, Microsoft and Google. They own 60% of all hyperscale data center capacity, followed by Meta, Alibaba, Tencent, Apple, ByteDance and other relatively small hyperscale operators.

Microsoft Invests €2B in AI Infrastructure in Spain https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/02/21/microsoft-invests-e2b-in-ai-infrastructure-in-spain/ Wed, 21 Feb 2024 08:27:12 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=118824 ...]]> Microsoft will invest $2.1 billion to expand its artificial intelligence and cloud services infrastructure in Spain. The investment, which will be made over the next two years, was announced after Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Microsoft Corp President Brad Smith held a meeting earlier this week. It means quadrupling the flow of funds from the tech giant to the Iberian state.

Smith said it was not just about building data centres, but a commitment to help develop the “security, development and digital transformation of the country’s government, businesses and people”.

He added that the tech giant has been investing in Spain for 37 years. In September 2021, the company announced that a new artificial intelligence technology research and development centre would be established in Barcelona. It was then that Alberto Granados, president of Microsoft Spain, said that Microsoft’s investment is proof that Spain has the necessary potential to develop the digital sector.

This is the second major investment Microsoft has made in Europe within a month. Recall that last week the company invested 3 billion euros in the development of the artificial intelligence ecosystem in Germany.

Similar to its plans in Spain, over the next two years Microsoft has pledged to invest the funds in strengthening the AI infrastructure in Germany, building new data centres and training people to develop AI skills.

Major technology companies are increasing their presence in Europe by investing in the development of artificial intelligence, which in turn coincides with the implementation of EU legislation on artificial intelligence.

“Pay for Your Rights”: Meta Faces Complaint Because of Its Subscription Model https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/11/29/pay-for-your-rights-meta-faces-complaint-because-of-its-subscription-model/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 13:09:30 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=114957 ...]]> Meta Platforms’ ad-free paid subscription service, which launched in Europe this month, is facing one of its biggest tests yet, as privacy group NOYB filed a complaint with an Austrian regulator on Tuesday, saying it amounts to paying a fee to ensure privacy. Shortly before that, NOYB described Meta’s approach as a “pay for your rights”

The company received a lot of negative feedback and took countless criticism for offering users paid versions of its apps as a way to avoid targeted advertising.

“More than 20pc of the EU population are already at risk of poverty. For the complainant in our case, as for many others, a ‘Pay or Okay’ system would mean paying the rent or having privacy”, said NOYB founder Max Schrems.

Rumours of this subscription model spread last month and were later confirmed by Meta, which said that allowing people to purchase a subscription for no ads “balances the requirements of European regulators while giving users choice.”

In its complaint, NOYB said that under EU law, consent for personalized ads is only valid if it is “freely given”, and argued that the subscription-based alternative is “the exact opposite” of free choice.

According to NOYB, a minimal fraction of individuals expresses a preference for their personal data to be employed in personalized advertising. Conversely, a study indicates that over 99% of people opt not to pay a privacy fee.

The organization also raises concerns about the expenses associated with preserving privacy under the proposed subscription model. NOYB highlights that users would need to commit to an annual subscription exceeding €250 to ensure that their Facebook and linked Instagram accounts remain devoid of personalized advertising.

The Four Types of TECH Companies in Europe with the Highest Salaries https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/10/02/the-four-types-of-tech-companies-in-europe-with-the-highest-salaries/ Sun, 01 Oct 2023 21:15:13 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=111643 ...]]> It’s clear for the US, but Which Types of Tech Companies in Europe Have the Highest Salaries?

When our goal is high paying software engineering jobs, we hardly think of Germany, France or the Netherlands. The first names and areas that spring to mind are Silicon Valley, San Francisco and New York. The fact is that the US is probably where an IT talent can make a lot of money. The average salary for software engineers in the US is $110,140 compared to $52,275 in Germany.

Yes, that’s a difference we can’t ignore. But let’s jump to conclusions and rush to conclusions about IT pay in Europe because nothing is as it seems. When we take a look at the top earning companies in Europe, you’ll notice that they are the ones paying much more than those overall figures you saw above.

If we want to grow in the most lucrative sector in technology, we need to consider a number of factors. Location is obviously among the most important. For example, the highest salaries in Western Europe are in the Netherlands.

The size of the company, its funding and the location of its headquarters are also important. Here are also the highest paid types of tech companies in Europe, according to We Are Developers.

The Four Types of TECH Companies in Europe with the Highest Salaries

FinTech
FinTech covers everything related to money online. This includes mobile banking, payment processing services, post-payment, wallet management, trading platforms and even cryptocurrencies. Major European companies in this field are N26, Solaris, SumUp, Klarna, Wise, Wirecard. The highest annual salary for a senior engineer is 605,000 euros.

FAANG
We all know that the FAANG companies (Meta, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google) in the US offer very competitive salary packages. In Europe, it’s no different. According to We Are Developers, FAANG companies tend to offer a higher base salary, but less in terms of equity and bonuses. The highest pay package is €255,000.

Cloud Software
At the risk of sounding mercantile, there’s a lot of money in the cloud space. Plus, the big players are legacy companies like IBM and Oracle. Bay Area international cloud companies pay the highest salaries. Companies like HashiCorp and Databricks. The highest reported remuneration package is €335,000.
Travel sector

It may surprise many to learn that software engineers in the travel sector have the highest earnings in Europe. It actually makes sense when you consider the business model and how big companies like booking.com, Trivago and Skyscanner are. They pay their developers well. According to Techpays, the highest remuneration package is €455,000.

Companies Unicorns
These are the companies that reach billion dollar status, pay their senior developers well. Uber is a notable name in this category. In the last few years, there are also several European companies that have become unicorns: Zalando, Bolt, Hopin, Personio, Vinted and Gorillas. According to Techpays, the highest remuneration package is 374,000 euros.

TikTok, the First European Data Centre and Tension Between Politics in Beijing https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/09/07/tiktok-the-first-european-data-centre-and-tension-between-politics-in-beijing/ Thu, 07 Sep 2023 06:51:59 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=110716 ...]]> TikTok’s first European data centre is now operational and located in Dublin, The Verge reports. The social platform is trying to address long-standing concerns about user privacy.

The company behind TikTok, ByteDance, is in the crosshairs of Western politicians who believe that user information could be given to bad actors.

ByteDance is based in Beijing, whose laws oblige companies in the country to share data with the government for national security reasons.

TikTok, however, has always been opposed to tracking its users or handing over any data to governments, saying Beijing’s laws do not apply to data stored overseas. Until Tuesday, users’ data was stored only on servers in the US and Singapore.

With the first European data centre in Europe, the entertainment platform is making another attempt to reduce the tension in politics and its skepticism.

A second such centre, which is in the process of being set up, will be located in Ireland, as well as another to be located in Norway.

TikTok chief executive Theo Bertram, the firm’s vice president of public policy in Europe, said this would create a “specifically hardened security environment around our European users’ data”.

The idea of protecting user data applies not only to users in EU countries, but also to the UK and Switzerland.

Web Summit CEO Criticizes US and Europe: Find it difficult when companies from elsewhere in the world outcompete them https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/09/05/web-summit-ceo-criticizes-us-and-europe-find-it-difficult-when-companies-from-elsewhere-in-the-world-outcompete-them/ Tue, 05 Sep 2023 08:11:11 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=110686 ...]]> Paddy Cosgrave, CEO of the annual technology conference Web Summit, stated emphatically on Al Jazeera’s On The Record that China will dominate the tech world in the next decade.

According to Cosgrave, the West has lost its status as a leader in technology and innovation after holding this position for half a century.

The Irish co-founder of the Global Tech event did not fail to criticise the US and Europe, saying that “it’s hard for them when companies from other parts of the world are ahead of them”.

“For 50 years advances within technology were driven by the United States, but over the past decade, there has been rapid dispersion of technological capability to other parts of the world,” he said.

“In the coming decade, China will dominate technology because it has focused intensively on the important partnership between the public and private sectors with stunning results”, he continued.

According to him, the Middle East will be the region that will bring the “biggest growth” in the technology sector, whose emerging companies will be represented at the event.

“When Web Summit started, it attracted an overwhelmingly European and North American audience, but the changes over the past five years have been stark with the rise of participation from the Arab world,” Cosgrave said.

Cosgrave was adamant that the event would help introduce the rest of the world to the country and the Arab world.

London and Berlin are the Most Wanted Locations for VC Jobs in Europe https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/02/27/london-and-berlin-with-the-most-vc-jobs-in-europe/ Mon, 27 Feb 2023 11:28:20 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=102196 ...]]> Conrad Kordowski, former head of the investment team at Slush and investment analyst at Innovation Nest, has reviewed more than 1,400 venture investment jobs advertised through 2022 and found that when it comes to venture investment jobs, London and Berlin are the most in-demand locations, tech.eu reports.

There are 135 vacancies in Berlin and 118 in London, with just over half of all vacancies in both capitals. Munich and Paris rank third and fourth respectively, Zurich 12 positions, Frankfurt 11, Stockholm and Amsterdam 8 and Barcelona and Cologne complete the top 10 with 7 positions.

It’s probably no surprise to anyone that the US accounts for 55.7% of all vacancies in the VC world, with Germany, the UK and France taking the No. 2, 3 and 4 spots. And Australia ranks fifth with 35 jobs on offer, despite its domestic VC market being just 10% of Europe’s in terms of funding in Q4 2022.

The job market over the past year was filled with junior (intern and/or analyst) and mid-level (associate/investment manager) opportunities, which accounted for 38.6% and 43.1%, respectively. Senior level positions (director/partner), the venture capital job market in 2022 saw only 18.3% of positions advertised or available.

Kordowski also notes that the high percentage of entry-level positions “may be due to the high turnover of such opportunities, with some venture capital firms often hiring new interns or analysts every 3-6 months.”

“Due to the private nature of some hiring processes in VC, it was not possible to gather information from every VC firm.”

he said

Kordovsky’s data includes 1,407 job postings from 805 venture capital firms in 35 countries that are posted on two publicly available venture capital-related job boards, Startup&VC and John Gannon Blog.

European Commission Bans Employees from Using TikTok https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/02/27/european-commission-bans-employees-from-using-tiktok/ Mon, 27 Feb 2023 10:46:40 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=102189 ...]]> The European Commission has banned its staff from using TikTok, BBC News reports. The measure is aimed at “protecting data and enhancing cyber security”.

The platform is facing accusations of collecting user data and passing it on to the Chinese government. The company insists it operates no differently from other social media.

EU spokeswoman Sonja Gospodinova said that the corporate board of the European Commission, the EU’s executive body, took the decision for security reasons.

“The measure aims to protect the Commission against cybersecurity threats and actions which may be exploited for cyberattacks against the corporate environment of the commission,”

she said.

The ban also means that European Commission staff cannot use TikTok on personal devices where the app is installed.

The Commission claims to have around 32 000 permanent and contract staff. They must remove the application as soon as possible, but no later than 15 March.

For those who do not comply by the deadline, corporate apps – such as the commission’s email and Skype for Business – will no longer be available.

TikTok said the commission’s decision was based on misconceptions about its platform.

“We are disappointed by this decision, which we believe is wrong and based on fundamental misconceptions,”

a spokesperson said.

Last year, TikTok admitted that some officials in China had access to European users’ data.

This is a new stage in the growing tensions between Beijing and the West after accusations surfaced that China deliberately created the platform in order to hinder the mental development of the adolescent generation in the West. This is evidenced by the Chinese version of the app, which, unlike that used around the world, showcases the achievements of school and university students, provides good examples and stimulates the development of society.

Something quite different from the TikTok challenges that Europeans and Americans dare to do, some of which result in deaths.

“Not Optional” Campaign Provides €5 Billion to European Startups https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/02/07/not-optional-campaign-provides-e5-billion-to-european-startups/ Tue, 07 Feb 2023 12:15:56 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=100529 ...]]> A new analysis by the Not Optional campaign has shown that over the last 5 years more than €5 billion has changed hands from founders and investors to employees of European startups.

As startups continue to operate in a challenging macro environment, this increase in employee ownership reflects a growing recognition of the importance of rewarding talent by both entrepreneurs and investors.

The improvement also comes after Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain introduced reforms to national share option schemes from 1 January 2023, with further improvements planned in the UK, Austria and Belgium later this year.

Founders and policymakers recognise the crucial role of talent and continue to embrace stock options as a way to strengthen European start-ups and drive innovation.

The campaign, led by Index Ventures and backed by more than 700 CEOs, is pushing policymakers to reform outdated rules and regulations that limit employee ownership.

When it launched in 2017, European employee ownership at late-stage startups averaged 12%, compared to 20% in the United States — where employee ownership has long been recognised as a vital tool to attract the best talent. The new analysis finds that this has now risen to 16% in Europe.

With 124 new VC-backed unicorns in Europe in 2021 and 2022, this represents an additional €5 billion of value that is now in the hands of employees. As more startups mature, this number will multiply many times over, drawing in more talent to Europe’s innovation ecosystem.

Following the publication of the New European Innovation Agenda in July last year, the Commission is now expected to establish the European Stock Options Working Group led by Commissioner Mariya Gabriel, and the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation.
