Back in May, the streaming company began warning subscribers about a policy that aims to prevent multiple users from sharing the same account.

Netflix allows you to share your account, but only with people who live in the same household as the user. For example, you can create separate accounts for your kids and parents within the same account and install them on different TVs or computers, but only in the same house. To share an account with people who live elsewhere, you have to pay an extra $7.99 per user. However, this option is not available on Netflix’s cheapest plans. According to a report by analytics company Antenna, the company’s subscribers have started to increase due to Netflix’s stricter policies.

“This is not a one-off event. This is partly due to measures being implemented successively, partly because some users of third-party accounts do not register their own immediately. They’ll be doing it for the next few months, and maybe even longer if we bring something to market that they’re very interested in selling“, said Greg Peters, CEO at the company.

The company found that users of passwords from other people’s accounts who registered their own had the same characteristics as long-term customers, so the company could expect a high retention rate of new subscribers.

Netflix expects growth in paid subscribers in the third quarter to be similar to the second quarter. Revenue growth is projected to accelerate significantly in the fourth quarter as the company’s anti-password efforts gain momentum. Ad revenue growth will also contribute quite a bit of revenue.

The New Android 14 Update is Here – But You Don’t Need to Download it Yet https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/03/09/the-new-android-14-update-is-here-but-you-don-t-need-to-download-it-yet/ Thu, 09 Mar 2023 10:47:45 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=102858 ...]]> Google has released the second developer preview of Android 14, taking the next major release of the operating system one step further towards its full release, Digital Trends reports.

Like the first developer preview of Android 14, the clue as to who it’s for is in the name.

This early release is designed for developers to test new features and designs in their applications and explore how new tools in the software can help improve them. It is not intended for everyday use by users – that version will appear later.

The second pre-release comes a month after the first and includes improvements based on feedback from the initial release, as well as additional changes to some of the first new features introduced with Android 14. Don’t expect an in-depth look at how Android 14 will look and work here, as the tools are focused on app development rather than showing directly user-facing design elements and features.

In terms of security and privacy, the introduction of Credential Manager is an important move as it promises to simplify login procedures – through the use of passwords or (more interestingly) keys. Google discussed passcodes in Android last year, and this useful feature promises to be part of Android 14’s improved security suite. Other changes being experimented with in the second Developer Preview include fewer non-discriminatory notifications, optimized background memory management, and a more user-customizable personalization menu.

The second developer preview of Android 14 has to be installed manually and is currently only compatible with Google Pixel phones, ranging from the Pixel 4a to the latest Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro models. Even if you have one of these phones, it’s not advisable to attempt to install the new preview version of Android 14 unless you’re a developer.

In the near future, as it has done in the past, Google will release a beta version of the software that is suitable for non-developers to try out. It’s best to wait until then before trying to see what Android 14 offers today.

PyTorch-Nightly affected by supply chain attack https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/01/09/pytorch-nightly-affected-by-supply-chain-attack/ https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/01/09/pytorch-nightly-affected-by-supply-chain-attack/#comments Mon, 09 Jan 2023 10:53:21 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=97919 ...]]> Developers who installed the nightly builds of PyTorch between December 25 and 30, 2022, are advised to uninstall it and purge the pip cache to get rid of the malicious package, PyTorch maintainers report. The new attack highlights a recent trend, Infoq wrote on the topic.

The downstream attack stems from a malicious dependency that was inserted into PyPi with the same name as the one that ships with PyTorch nightly.

“Since the PyPI index takes precedence, this malicious package was installed instead of the version from our official repository. This design allows someone to register a package with the same name as one that exists in the third-party index, and pip will install its default version.”

The malicious package, called torchtriton, includes a binary file that, in addition to exfiltrating system information such as hostname, DNS configuration, username, and shell environment, also uploads the contents of /etc/hosts, /etc/passwords, ~/.gitconfig, ~/.ssh/*, and the first 1,000 files found in users’ home directories. However, the information is only exfiltrated when the user explicitly imports the triton package into their program, which reduces the impact of the attack and the ability for mass distribution.

Following the official disclosure, the alleged torchtriton maintainer said on its website that the package was not intended for malicious activity, Aks Sharma also reported on Twitter. Analyzing the attack for Bleeping Computer, however, Sharma also revealed that torchtriton used anti-virtual machine techniques as well as obfuscation to evade detection.

PyTorch maintainers immediately took action to remove torchtriton as a dependency and replace it with pytorch-triton along with a dummy package registered with PyPi to ensure the attachment would not recur.

Apple with First Beta Release of 16.3 and 9.3 OS for Developers https://devstyler.io/blog/2022/12/19/apple-with-first-beta-release-of-16-3-and-9-3-os-for-its-products/ Mon, 19 Dec 2022 10:17:58 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=96099 ...]]> Apple unveiled the first beta versions of iOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3, tvOS 16.3 and watchOS 9.3 to developers, relaunching the beta software creation process.

Developers can download the latest versions by joining the beta testing program through Apple’s Developer Center. Public beta releases are released after their developer counterparts. They are available through the Apple Beta Software Program.

The first iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 betas have build number 20D5024e, replacing build 20C65. The first beta of watchOS 9.3 has build number 20S5626e, replacing build 20S361. The tvOS 16.3 build number and HomePod Software Version 16.3 build is 20K5626c, up from build 20K362.

In the iOS 16.3 update, which is currently only available to developers, there is support for a security key, a new feature that Apple announced just a few days ago and which provides better account protection.

Once installed, watchOS 9.3 can be downloaded from the dedicated Apple Watch app on iPhone by going to General and then selecting Software update. To update to the new software, the Apple Watch must have 50% battery life, be on the charger, and be within range of the iPhone it’s paired with.

AppleInsider and Apple advise users not to install beta operating systems or beta software in general on major devices because of the risk of problems that could lead to data loss. To be more secure and safe, testers should use secondary or non-essential hardware and make sure they always have sufficient backups of their critical data.

How to easily remove preinstalled Windows 11 apps? https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/12/22/how-to-easily-remove-preinstalled-windows-11-apps/ Wed, 22 Dec 2021 18:34:27 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=77318 ...]]> Many of you probably noticed how many unnecessary applications have been installed on your laptops. With Windows 10 and Windows 11 this problem becomes even bigger. That’s why the German developer O&O developed an application named App Buster which makes it way easier to uninstall any app on your Windows 10 or 11 system.

Of course, you may find it annoying going through the list on your Start menu with the aim of uninstalling unnecessary applications one by one. O&O App Buster has been updated and now it is available even for the new Windows 11. It makes the process of removing the unwanted apps easier as it presents all your installed apps which are tied to the Microsoft Store and allows you to remove multiple of them in one step.

The fact that it doesn’t even require installation is really convenient. If you would like to use it, you can just download the file and run it if you want to see your files and start removing the ones you don’t want anymore. The application sorts applications into categories, gives information about the apps’ size and gives you the chance to delete even apps you have installed by yourself.

When you decide to remove a certain application, you will be able to choose to remove it for the current user, all users or the entire machine. If you choose the last option, the app will be included in a O&O App Buster’s list where you can find it and reinstall it whenever you want.

However, there are some system applications which can not be uninstalled, such as Microsoft Store, for example. Such applications are those who are connected with the operating system. Also, if you are worried that uninstalling an app will cause you some problems, App Buster will offer to create a restore point before changing your system.

A new build is now Available for Windows 11 https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/12/16/a-new-build-is-now-available-for-windows-11/ Thu, 16 Dec 2021 10:26:58 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=76836 ...]]> A new build of Windows 11 is being launched by Microsoft. The version is suitable for insiders who are enrolled in the Dev channel. Windows 11 build 22523 includes some new features which are waiting to be tried out. For users who have an ARM PC, there is a great news – the build is available for their devices.

What’s new?

When you use Alt + Tab with the aim to switch apps, you will be able to see your snap groups listed, instead of hovering the mouse cursor over one of the apps on the taskbar. At first, this option was available only for some Dev channel insiders but at that point it is already available for everyone.

Another great feature is the ability to add media servers from the three-dot icon in the command bar, when you open the “This PC” page in File Explorer. If you would like to remove servers this way if you have any.

Last but not least, the company is slowly moving more and more features from the Control Panel to the new Settings app, where you can also uninstall Windows updates, in case you are facing difficulties with some of them.

The company announced that this is the last build we will receive for this year.

Hackers are trying to exploit a new Windows Installer https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/11/25/hackers-are-trying-to-exploit-a-new-windows-installer/ Thu, 25 Nov 2021 13:01:22 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=75531 ...]]> Attackers are trying to exploit a new variant of a recently publicized privilege escalation vulnerability. The aim is to potentially execute imperious code on fully-patched systems in order to demonstrate how adversaries move quickly to weaponize a publicly available exploit.

Cisco Talos revealed that it “detected malware samples in the wild that are attempting to take advantage of this vulnerability.”

Abdelhamid Naceri, who is a security researcher, tracked and discovered the thread called CVE-2021-41379. The elevation of privilege flaw affecting the Windows Installer software component was actually resolved as part of Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday updates for November 2021.

Naceri, however, found that it was not only possible to bypass the fix implemented by Microsoft, but also achieve local privilege escalation via a newly discovered zero-day bug.

The proof-of-concept (POC) exploit, dubbed “InstallerFileTakeOver,” works by overwriting the discretionary access control list (DACL) for Microsoft Edge Elevation Service in order to replace any executable file on the system with an MSI installer file which allows the attacker to run code with SYSTEM privileges.

So, what can the attacker cause to the system? Well, an attacker is given admin privileges, they could then abuse the access to gather full control over the system. He can download additional software, modify, delete or even delete sensitive information stored in the machine. Kevin Beaumont who is a security researcher tweeted:

“Can confirm this works, local priv esc. Tested on Windows 10 20H2 and Windows 11. The prior patch MS issued didn’t fix the issue properly.”

In Neceri’s opinion, the best course if action is now waiting for Microsoft to release a security patch for the problem as the latest variant of CVE-2021-41379 is “more powerful than the original one.” However, we still don’t know when Microsoft will act on the public disclosure and release a fix.
