Intel – Devstyler.io https://devstyler.io News for developers from tech to lifestyle Wed, 17 Apr 2024 11:53:34 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.5 Companies Unite to Create AI Tools for Enterprises https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/04/17/companies-unite-to-create-ai-tools-for-enterprises/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 11:53:34 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=124498 ...]]> The Linux Foundation has announced the launch of the Open Platform for Enterprise AI (OPEA), a project aimed at fostering the development of open, modular generative AI systems.

The project is led by the Linux Foundation’s LF AI and Data organization, which focuses on platform initiatives related to artificial intelligence and data.

LF AI and Data executive director Ibrahim Hadadt states in a press release that OPEA is expected to pave the way for the release of “fortified,” “scalable” generative AI systems that “leverage the best open source innovations from across the ecosystem.”

Other project members include Intel, IBM-owned Red Hat, Hugging Face, Domino Data Lab, MariaDB and VMware.

When asked what these companies can build together, Haddad hinted at several possibilities, such as “optimized” support for AI toolchains and compilers that allow AI workloads to run on different hardware components, as well as “heterogeneous” pipelines for generating augmented data (RAG). RAG is gaining popularity in enterprise applications of generative AI.

RAG models reference this external information – which can be in the form of proprietary company data, a public database, or some combination of the two – before generating a response or performing a task.

OPEA members say they are very interested in creating a toolkit for enterprise generative AI.

Although each of the companies has a different focus – Cloudera focuses on the cloud AI ecosystem, Domino offers generative AI applications for businesses, and VMware handles the infrastructure for AI – all have shown interest in AI development and have launched products and partnerships in this area.

However, the question of truly working together on developing compatible AI tools within OPEA remains open. Although companies may have different interests and strategies, collaboration is possible, especially if they have a common point that rests on the development of AI technologies.

Huawei has incurred the wrath of the US https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/04/16/huawei-has-incurred-the-wrath-of-the-us/ Tue, 16 Apr 2024 13:42:23 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=121743 ...]]> Republican lawmakers in the US have criticized the Biden administration after Huawei unveiled a laptop powered by Intel’s artificial intelligence chip, CNBC reports.

In 2019, the United States placed Huawei on a trade restriction list for violating sanctions against Iran, part of a broader effort to impede Beijing’s technological progress. Placement on the list means the company’s suppliers must be licensed before supplying to the country.

The license, which was issued by the Trump administration, allows Intel to supply Huawei CPUs for use in laptops starting in 2020. Hardliners in China have pushed the Biden administration to revoke that license.

With the unveiling of Huawei’s first AI-powered laptop, the MateBook X Pro, powered by Intel’s new Core Ultra 9 processor, doubts have also been raised that the Commerce Department has approved the supply of the new chip to Huawei.

According to sources, the chips have been supplied under an existing license.

The Commerce Department and Intel have so far declined to comment. Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei has also remained silent on the subject.

TECH Giants Prepare AI Strike Against NVIDIA https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/03/29/tech-giants-prepare-ai-strike-against-nvidia/ Fri, 29 Mar 2024 14:06:22 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=120663 ...]]> The UXL alliance will aim to dislodge NVIDIA’s dominant position

A group of technology companies, including Intel, Google, Arm, Qualcomm and Samsung, created the Unified Accelerator Fund (UXL) alliance, through which they will work together to remove the advantages that NVIDIA has as a dominant player in the artificial intelligence market, reports The Verge.

The alliance will undertake the mission of developing an open-source software package that will allow AI professionals to break away from NVIDIA’s technology. Additionally, the code that developers create will be able to function on any machine with any chip.

The Unified Acceleration Foundation is still in the design phase, but is expected to begin operations by the beginning of the second half of the year. UXL currently supports the OneAPI open standard. It was created by the Intel company.

Members of the alliance believe that it will remove restrictions on developers using specific programming languages, code sets and any other tools intended to bind developers to the use of certain architectures. For example – NVIDIA’s CUDA platform, which strives for this.

After focusing entirely on making chips for AI models like the H100, the company reached $2 trillion in market capitalization last month. This secured NVIDIA’s top spot among chip makers. The company is also planning to release new AI models soon – H200 GPU.

The chips that NVIDIA manufactures require developers to use the CUDA architecture, which supersedes all other chip manufacturers’ architectures by leaps and bounds. Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, also shared that 4 million developers use CUDA.

However, technology companies are not giving up and continue to try to create alternative architectures of their own to displace the dominant one in the market.

For now, the creators of UXL intend to support NVIDIA hardware and code. Initially, the project will aim to develop options for AI applications.

The group of tech companies that make up the alliance is looking to collaborate with other powerhouses like Microsoft and Amazon to make sure the solutions they provide can be built into any chip or hardware.

End to the Use of Western Technology in China? https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/03/26/end-to-the-use-of-western-technology-in-china/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 10:38:24 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=120497 ...]]> The publication of the list is an indication of China’s growing efforts to replace Western technology with locally developed products

AMD and Intel do not appear on the list of processors approved by China’s Information Security Assessment Center, The Register reports. A December 26, 2023 document lists 18 processors that Beijing has approved as suitable for use by locals. The x86 architecture is included on the list, but only in chips manufactured by Shanghai Zhaoxin Integrated Circuit Co. Ltd – which is minority owned by Taiwan’s Via Technologies and holds a license to produce x86 processors.

Zhaoxin’s processors aren’t as powerful as Intel’s Xeons or AMD’s Epycs, but they can power some desktops.

The list also includes approved desktop and server operating systems. Only Chinese code is present, namely:

  • Galaxy Kirin Linux developed by China National University of Defense Technology;
  • Tongxin OS, a Debian variant developed by Shanghai-based UnionTech;
  • Fangde OS, another Chinese project;

In addition to chips and operating systems, the list also includes databases, but nothing from Western developers made the cut. Again, China relies on its own established projects such as Alibaba Cloud’s PolarDB, Tencent’s TDSQL and a few others.

The publication of the list is an indication of China’s growing efforts to replace Western technology with locally developed products.

The Financial Times spoke to some IT shops in China, which confirmed that they are phasing out products such as Windows PCs as “shop from home” regulations have come into force.

These provisions were first proposed in 2014. As of May 2022. They were re-introduced. A deadline of two years for their implementation was also set then. This means that China has just five weeks to switch to using indigenous hardware and software.

However, many Chinese companies have already developed applications and automations based on Western technology. According to market observers, rebuilding these tools will be neither a quick nor an easy task. Whether this is the final date after which China will not use Western-created technologies is unclear, given that past edicts to switch to Chinese-only technologies have been repeated several times.

Microsoft and Intel Strike $15 Billion Dollar Deal https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/02/23/microsoft-and-intel-strike-15-billion-dollar-deal/ Fri, 23 Feb 2024 10:41:46 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=119004 ...]]> The deal reflects Intel’s desire to return to the top of chipmaking

The contract between the tech companies is that Intel will make custom chips for computers designed by Microsoft and for Microsoft, The Verge reports.

The partnership between Intel and Microsoft was announced during the Intel Foundry event. Intel estimates the value of the deal at over $15 billion dollar.

There is no information from the two corporations on exactly what the chips will be used for. Microsoft will use them for internal designs in both processors and AI smoke detectors, writes Bloomberg.

“We are in the midst of a very exciting platform shift that will fundamentally transform productivity for every individual organization and the entire industry,” stated Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in the official press release.

The chips will use Intel’s 18A process, which has been an indispensable part of the company since the return of Intel CEO – Pat Gelsinger.

The corporation believes that through the production of chips, they will once again rank among the leaders in the technology industry. In this venture, Microsoft will be their first major customer as well as a partner.

Producing designs for other companies is a strategy that has worked well for Intel’s competitor Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). It has created profitable partnerships with corporations such as: Apple, Qualcomm and AMD.

Pat Gelsinger announced that the foundry model for microelectronics manufacturing is a big part of Intel’s strategy. The new plans to manufacture chips using the foundry business model come at a time when technology companies are trying to make their own chips but are facing many challenges.

Intel Corporation has postponed the opening of a $20 billion chip plant to 2026. The original plans were for it to be opened in 2025. As the reason for the cancellation of the opening of the plant, Intel points to insufficient demand in the chip market and the delay in funding from the state.

Intel Releases Version 1.0 of the Software Development Kit https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/03/07/intel-releases-version-1-0-of-the-software-development-kit/ Tue, 07 Mar 2023 09:54:40 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=102645 ...]]> Intel has released version 1.0 of the Intel Quantum software development kit (SDK), following a beta release last September.

The SDK is a complete quantum computer in simulation that can also interface with Intel’s quantum hardware, including Intel’s Horse Ridge II control chip and Intel’s quantum spin qubit chip when it becomes available this year.

The kit allows developers to program quantum algorithms in simulation and features an intuitive programming interface written in C++ using an industry-standard low-level virtual machine (LLVM) compiler chain. As a result, Intel’s SDK offers seamless interaction with C/C++ and Python applications, making it more versatile and customizable.

“The Intel Quantum SDK helps programmers get ready for future large-scale commercial quantum computers. It will not only help developers learn how to create quantum algorithms and applications in simulation, but it will also advance the industry by creating a community of developers that will accelerate the development of applications, so they are ready when Intel’s quantum hardware becomes available”,

said Anne Matsuura, director of Quantum Applications & Architecture, Intel Labs.

Version 1.0 of the SDK includes an intuitive programming interface based on C++, providing a programming language that’s familiar to classical computing developers, enabling collaboration between them and quantum developers.

The kit also features a quantum runtime environment optimized for executing hybrid quantum-classical algorithms. Developers have the choice of two target backends for simulating qubits to either represent a higher number of generic qubits or Intel hardware.

The SDK is a customizable and expandable platform providing greater flexibility when developing quantum applications. It also provides for users to compare compiler files, a standard feature in classical computing development, to discern how well an algorithm is optimized in the compiler.

It allows users to see the source code and obtain lower levels of abstraction, gaining insight into how a system stores data.
