Machiavellian Leadership in the Age of Tech Titans https://devstyler.io/blog/2025/04/04/what-do-musk-bezos-and-zuckerberg-have-in-common-machiavellian-leadership-in-the-age-of-tech-titans/ Fri, 04 Apr 2025 10:39:47 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=127388 ...]]> Machiavellianism, a term derived from the Renaissance political thinker Niccolò Machiavelli, describes a leadership style characterized by strategic manipulation, pragmatism, and, in some cases, ruthless ambition. In the fast-paced, highly competitive tech industry, several influential leaders have displayed Machiavellian traits, using strategic thinking, calculated decision-making, and power consolidation to drive innovation and success.

The Machiavellian Approach in Tech Leadership

Machiavellian leaders operate with a results-oriented mindset, focusing on long-term gains, often at the expense of short-term relationships. This approach is marked by key traits such as:

 • Tactical Influence

The ability to influence employees, competitors, and investors to achieve their objectives.

 • Pragmatic Decision-Making

Prioritizing efficiency and effectiveness over conventional ethics.

 • Control and Power Consolidation

Ensuring that they maintain control over their company’s direction by eliminating potential threats or competition.

 • Visionary Disruption

Using bold, sometimes controversial strategies to revolutionize industries.

Notable Tech Leaders with Machiavellian Traits

Several high-profile tech leaders exhibit qualities associated with Machiavellianism, helping them build empires while also attracting scrutiny for their methods.

Steve Jobs (Apple)

Steve Jobs was known for his intense focus, perfectionism, and an unyielding demand for excellence. His ability to manipulate situations, fire employees who didn’t meet his expectations, and cultivate a cult-like following around Apple products exemplified Machiavellian leadership. One of the most famous examples of his strategic approach was his ousting from Apple in 1985, only to return in 1997, orchestrating a dramatic comeback that redefined the company. Jobs also reportedly used a “reality distortion field” to push employees beyond their perceived limits.

Elon Musk (Tesla, SpaceX, X)

Elon Musk’s leadership is marked by his relentless pursuit of ambitious goals, sometimes pushing employees to extreme limits. He is known for making bold claims, disrupting industries, and strategically using social media to manipulate markets and public perception. A prime example was his infamous 2018 tweet: “Am considering taking Tesla private at $420. Funding secured.”—which led to an SEC lawsuit and a $40 million settlement. His abrupt decisions, such as mass layoffs at Twitter (now X) after acquiring it, demonstrate his cutthroat approach to leadership.

Jeff Bezos (Amazon)

Bezos transformed Amazon from an online bookstore into a global e-commerce and cloud computing giant through calculated strategy and unwavering ambition. His intense focus on efficiency, cost-cutting, and leveraging data-driven insights to dominate markets showcases a pragmatic and results-driven leadership style. One example of his strategic control was Amazon’s aggressive pricing tactics to undercut competitors, leading to market dominance and antitrust scrutiny. Bezos also famously enforced a “two-pizza rule” for meetings to maximize efficiency and productivity. This rule states that no meeting should have more attendees than two pizzas can feed, typically around six to eight people. The idea is to keep discussions focused, decision-making streamlined, and avoid unnecessary bureaucracy—hallmarks of Amazon’s data-driven and highly efficient culture.

Mark Zuckerberg (Meta, formerly Facebook)

Zuckerberg’s rise to power involved strategic acquisitions, aggressive competitive tactics, and a relentless pursuit of growth. His ability to navigate regulatory scrutiny, outmaneuver rivals, and retain control over Meta despite challenges from investors and government agencies illustrates his mastery of power dynamics and strategic manipulation. A notable example is Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014, moves that eliminated key competition and solidified Meta’s dominance. Additionally, the Cambridge Analytica scandal showcased how Facebook prioritized growth over user privacy.

Travis Kalanick (Uber)

Kalanick, the co-founder and former CEO of Uber, epitomized Machiavellian leadership with his aggressive expansion strategies, disregard for traditional regulations, and a workplace culture that prioritized rapid growth over ethical considerations. His approach included launching Uber in cities without regulatory approval, using “Greyball” software to evade authorities, and fostering a cutthroat internal culture. His leadership ultimately led to controversy, and he was forced to resign in 2017 after a series of scandals.

The Ethical Dilemma and Potential Balance of Machiavellian Leadership

While Machiavellian leaders drive innovation and industry disruption, their leadership style raises ethical concerns. Their focus on results often comes at the cost of employee well-being, ethical business practices, and, in some cases, regulatory compliance. However, certain elements of Machiavellian leadership—such as discipline, strategic decision-making, and setting clear boundaries—can be beneficial when used to maintain organizational structure and efficiency. When combined with leadership styles that prioritize employee well-being, such as transformational or servant leadership, Machiavellian elements can create a balanced approach that fosters both innovation and a supportive work culture.

The question remains: Is the Machiavellian approach a necessary evil in the tech world, or does it set a dangerous precedent for future leaders?

SpaceX Will Take CO2 From The Atmosphere https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/12/16/spacex-will-take-co2-from-the-atmosphere/ Thu, 16 Dec 2021 08:40:43 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=76816 ...]]> Elon Musk announced his rocket company SpaceX is planning to start a program in order to take CO2 out of the atmosphere and turn it into rocket fuel.

The billionaire entrepreneur tweeted that the technology will “also be important for Mars”. On Monday, Musk published on the social media:

“SpaceX is starting a program to take CO2 out of atmosphere & turn it into rocket fuel. Please join if interested”.

The statement came days after the SpaceX and Tesla founder was named Time magazine’s person of the year.

A “clown, genius, edgelord, visionary, industrialist, showman” in its piece – that’s how the magazine called him.

The Financial Times newspaper also named him as their person of the year on Wednesday.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was surpassed by Musk`s nomination as the world’s wealthiest person this year.

There is currently no further information on the carbon capture plans from SpaceX.

It is not yet clear how SpaceX would capture carbon and turn it into rocket fuel. Scientific processes do exist, such as the one used by Canadian company Carbon Engineering, which is making liquid fuel with carbon dioxide from the atmosphere which is then combined with hydrogen from water.

Microsoft Receives Cloud Revenue Boost From Pentagon https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/11/25/microsoft-receives-cloud-revenue-boost-from-pentagon/ Thu, 25 Nov 2021 15:15:52 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=75550 ...]]> Microsoft is one of the two beneficiaries of a Pentagon cloud computing contract to modernize IT systems. The government agency is soliciting bids for its Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC) program, a replacement to the $10 billion Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) initiative from 2019.

The JEDI contract, which was intended to modernize and unify the Pentagon’s piecemeal IT systems through cloud capabilities, was for a single provider. It was awarded to Microsoft, but it was put on hold after Amazon protested, claiming that the award was “politically corrupted” by Donald Trump, who had a public spat with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. The JEDI contract was Microsoft’s first cloud computing win from the Pentagon, while Amazon has been a services provider to the agency since 2014. The JEDI contract was scrapped earlier this year.

The JWCC has a similar mandate, but it is more open-ended in a couple of respects. First, it has solicited bids from other commercial cloud providers, including Oracle Corporation and Alphabet Inc.’s Google. In its press release, the General Services Administration stated that it “anticipates” awarding two contracts from the program to Amazon and Microsoft because they meet the Pentagon’s requirements for such systems.2

Second, the contract is indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity and has no ceiling on the dollar amount committed to the initiative. An IDIQ contract is for unlimited services for a limited period of time. The GSA stated in its press release that it expects to spend multiple billions of dollars on JWCC.

Here is how Amazon failed to Secure customer personal data https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/11/24/here-is-how-amazon-failed-to-secure-customer-personal-data/ Wed, 24 Nov 2021 11:21:31 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=75392 ...]]> A new investigation from Wired describes a shocking lack of concern for customer data at e-commerce giant Amazon, where employees took advantage of the faulty system to look up celebrities’ purchases, among other breaches.

It seems that despite Amazon’s professed customer-first mentality, the company failed to prioritize securing its customers’ personal information. Customer purchase histories were available to Amazon’s global customer service team, with little security or supervision to prevent the employees’ snooping.

A former service rep, who requested anonymity, said he remembered colleagues looking up the personal purchases of several celebrities. Eventually, accusations of employees viewing seller data to develop Amazon’s own products prompted questions about the company’s integrity. The former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos insisted that employees don’t access that data but said he couldn’t guarantee that the policy prohibiting employees from doing so wasn’t violated.

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Hires Lobbyist Connected To Obama Administration https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/11/22/jeff-bezos-blue-origin-hires-lobbyist-connected-to-obama-administration/ Mon, 22 Nov 2021 12:15:11 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=75188 ...]]> Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ space tourism company Blue Origin has hired the lobbyist Mac Campbell from Capitol Counsel to lobby on behalf of the company. The goal here is to “monitor and evaluate proposed changes to the Internal Revenue Code being considered by Congress as part of the budget reconciliation process” according to a lobbying registration form.

The lobbyist has ties to former President Barack Obama’s administration after a Democratic congressman proposed a tax that could make traveling to space a little more expensive.

Campbell was an assistant U.S. trade representative for congressional affairs while working in Obama’s executive office before moving on to the powerful Senate Finance Committee.

Only for this year Blue Origin has already spent over $1.3 million on lobbying alone. In 2020, the space company invested nearly $2 million trying to influence lawmakers.

President Joe Biden and Democrats are proposing a number of other tax provisions as part of their nearly $1.8 trillion social spending proposal that has yet to be passed by Congress. One of the ideas is to enact a 15% minimum corporate tax on declared income of large corporations.

Jeff Bezos or “Leo is Mr. Steal Yo Girl” ? https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/11/09/jeff-bezos-or-leo-is-mr-steal-yo-girl/ Tue, 09 Nov 2021 10:51:17 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=74352 ...]]> It seems like the most important question this november is going to be “Who is more attractive to the ladies – a tech billionaire (Jeff Bezos ) or one of the best actors (Leonardo DiCaprio)?”.

Lauren Sanchez accompanied Jeff Bezos at the 10th Annual Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) Art and Film Gala Presented By Gucci this year.

A short clip uploaded onto Twitter by @2cooI2blog shows Bezos` girlfriend seemingly forgetting about her billionaire boyfriend while her attention is directed towards Leo. During the conversation between the three of them, news anchor Sanchez appears fixated on DiCaprio.

Bezos’ tweet came in response to the same video shared by Barstool Sports. It says:

“Leo, come over here, I want to show you something…”

alongside an image of Bezos leaning over a sign that reads, “DANGER! STEEP CLIFF FATAL DROP”.

Immediately hilarious comments began circulating during Internet:

“Leo won’t be invited to space.”, wrote @avenaim.

“Jeff Bezos has all the money in the world but he can never be Leonardo DiCaprio… oof” , said @Jaythagawddd

The Actor got nicknames as Leonardo DiSnatchyobitchio and Leo is Mr. Steal Yo Girl.

Jeff Bezos and Yuri Milner Invest in an Anti-Aging Startup https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/09/06/jeff-bezos-and-yuri-milner-invest-in-an-anti-aging-startup/ Mon, 06 Sep 2021 12:22:00 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=69305 ...]]> Billionaires Jeff Bezos and Yuri Milner are reportedly funding a startup biotechnology firm with the aim of discovering a way to reverse aging.

Altos Labs was incorporated in the US and the UK earlier this year, and has raised at least $270million to look into the potential of cell reprogramming technology to turn back the clock in animals, and potentially, humans.

While little is known so far about Altos, early hires give an indication of the kinds of anti-aging techniques the lab might be looking into.

They include Dr. Shinya Yamanaka, who pioneered researched into cell reprogramming, earning him the 2012 Nobel Prize for the research.

He discovered that by adding just four specific proteins to cells, they can be instructed to revert back into an earlier state with the properties of embryonic stem cells that make up building blocks of new animal life.

Other talent being brought on at Altos include Dr. Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte, a Spanish biologist working at the Salk Institute in California, who has pioneered research into cell switching.

In 2016 he demonstrated Yamanaka’s embryonic stem cell technique and applied it to mice, which exhibited signs of age reversal.

Any anti-aging research would need such a ‘biological clock’ to measure the effectiveness of the techniques.
