The mission was aborted after a severe tilt on landing near the moon’s south pole. Instead of landing in an upright position, the 4.3-meter “Odyssey” turned out to be tilted to the side, which seriously hampered communication with The Earth.

It remained to be seen how much scientific data might be lost as a result of the shortened lifespan of Odysseus, which according to previous estimates from the company and its biggest customer, NASA, was supposed to operate on the moon for seven to 10 days.

Intuitive Machines ‘s forecast for a premature end to the mission came as new details emerged about testing shortcuts and human error that led to an in-flight failure of the spacecraft’s laser-guided range finders ahead of its landing last Thursday near the moon’s south pole.

“There were certainly things we could’ve done to test it and actually fire it. They would’ve been very time-consuming and very costly. So that was a risk as a company that we acknowledged and took that risk”, Mike Hansen, the company’s head of navigation systems, told Reuters in an interview on Saturday.

The company said during its first post-landing news briefing on Friday that Odysseus caught the bottom of one of its six landing legs on the uneven lunar surface on final descent and tipped over, coming to rest horizontally, apparently propped up on a rock.
Shares of Intuitive Machines plunged 35% on Monday.

Despite its less-than-ideal touchdown, Odysseus became the first U.S. spacecraft to land on the moon since NASAs last crewed Apollo mission to the lunar surface brought astronauts Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt there in 1972.

OpenELA Announces Public Release of Enterprise Linux Source Code https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/11/06/openela-announces-public-release-of-enterprise-linux-source-code/ Mon, 06 Nov 2023 12:51:29 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=113305 ...]]> OpenELA announced the public release of the Enterprise Linux source code, as well as technical and management milestones. OpenELA aims to foster the development and collaboration of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)-compatible distributions by making Enterprise Linux (EL) source code open and free.

“For decades organizations standardized on CentOS because it was freely available, followed the Enterprise Linux standard and was well supported by many vendors. After CentOS was discontinued, it left not only a gaping hole in the ecosystem, but it also clearly showed how the community needs to come together and do better. OpenELA is exactly that—the community’s answer to ensuring a collaborative and stable future for all professional IT departments and enterprise use cases”, said Gregory Kurtzer, CEO of CIQ and founder of Rocky Linux.

OpenELA’s mission is to provide open source code, tools and systems to the community. Core principles include adhering to established standards, providing timely updates and secure solutions, maintaining transparency, and ensuring that these resources remain free and accessible to all.

OpenELA serves as a platform for stakeholders interested in promoting open source enterprise Linux distributions, fostering collaboration, and aligning with the values of the open source community.

OpenELA functions as a platform for individuals and groups interested in advancing open source enterprise Linux distributions, fostering cooperation, and adhering to the principles of the open source community.

Within OpenELA, the Technical Steering Committee (TSC) holds a pivotal role in project governance, as noted by the working group. The TSC is responsible for supervising technical aspects, providing direction for development and maintenance, and managing access to OpenELA’s Git organizations.

Initially, the TSC is composed of experienced individuals from the founding companies, with the expectation that its membership will evolve over time. The TSC is of paramount importance to OpenELA’s technical vision, as it advocates for the interests of the community, facilitates collaboration, ensures code security, and upholds code availability.

Not a Profession, a Vocation: How to Become Your Favorite #TECH Leader https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/08/21/not-a-profession-a-vocation-how-to-become-your-favorite-tech-leader/ Mon, 21 Aug 2023 08:05:29 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=110278 ...]]> Constant self-improvement is a must for success not only in your professional life but also in your personal life. If you make small but meaningful changes and adapt based on how those changes affect real-world outcomes, you can become a much more capable and resilient individual whose qualities and skills will be especially needed when you choose to thrive in the tech world.

Being a technology leader is not just a task you have to do. Being a leader is a calling and a mission that carries with it great responsibility. Technology leaders care about their employees because they know that they are the foundation of a successfully completed project or created product.

Today we’re sharing the top tips that will turn you into a better version of yourself and your team’s favorite #tech leader, presented by 101 Ways.

Focus on leadership, not just technology
Technology leaders often think they must have the best technology knowledge in the world. But not only is it impossible to stay on top of the details of every technology or software development trend, given the broader responsibilities you have as CTO, CIO, etc., it’s simply not your job. As a leader, you’re not there to write code, you’re there to look at the bigger picture and make sure your teams are focused on the right problems and have the resources they need to get the job done.

What you need to do
You don’t need to have all the answers or understand all the details. You need trusted advisors who understand those details. Your job is to put that advice into context and make decisions about what is important and what is not. Then focus on communicating those priorities across the organization and ensuring your teams have the support and resources they need.

Do not forget about the attitude to culture
A sense of community has a huge impact on employee productivity, performance and engagement.

Ultimately, culture is about connections and what those connections facilitate. Culture requires attention to nuance and intentional action of reaching out and intentional listening. The need for intentional culture is becoming more apparent in the context of productivity and remote working, as well as managing teams that are not always (or never) in the same room.

What you need to do
Get into the expectations you have set for the team and embody them. Let your employees know that anyone who wants to drop by for a chat can do so, and that they’ll find a good companion and advisor in you.

Nurturing respect through differences
One of the many reasons for the ongoing obsession with the details of the latest technology trends is the fear that the only way to earn the respect of employees is to be “the best.” While there may be a grain of truth to this, you’ll never know as much about the details of a topic as
someone who spends their day, every day in this world.

What you need to do
You need to earn respect by being an effective leader and providing your teams with the support and resources they need.

You also need to develop a sense of comfort from not knowing all the answers. If you exude confidence when asking questions, you can actually use these moments as opportunities to let someone on your team shine by offering a solution. The doubt you feel is most often just in your head.

How does gaming impact people? https://devstyler.io/blog/2022/03/08/how-does-gaming-impact-people/ Tue, 08 Mar 2022 16:32:02 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=82145 ...]]> Playing video games is one of the most favorite hobbies for many people around the world, especially for the youngsters who spend most of their time in the virtual world. For some players, however, it is more than just a way of killing their spare time – it’s kind of a real job which is remarkably profitable.

There is a question which has been discussed for a long time since video games changed so much in the past few years: How does gaming impact people?

When we talk about advantages of being a gamer – the first thing we need to know is that gamers are really good at multitasking. Why? The answer is simple – while playing, gamers need to carefully watch their enemies, moving their character, watching their health line, etc. This turns out to be really useful, especially when their regular job requires them to do many things at once.

Sometimes people find themselves in a situation which requires making a fast decision. For games this isn’t a difficult task as they are able to make fast decisions. In their virtual world, players are constantly forced to decide whether to open the right or the left door. The unknown consequences for their character’s life and storyline makes them feel on the alert. That’s why in real life they can make a decision really fast.

Not everyone succeeds in adapting to a teamwork environment. There are many people out there who can’t fit in their team and find it difficult to work with other people. Players don’t have a problem with that as multiplayer games are making it much easier for them to adjust to playing with other people. There are games whose storylines and missions are impossible to be completed if a gamer is playing alone. So, this is how players become more adaptive among other people when it comes to teamwork on a project for example.

Of course, these are not the only advantages of playing games but we need to look at the negative aspects of being a gamer.

Every gamer has heard around millions of times in their life that video games are dangerous and addictive. At some point, this statement is true. Let’s take a look at the relationship issues, for example. Players are usually indifferent to their loved ones when they get addicted to a certain game. This is the time when they start being rude and stop showing their love to their friends and families which is a hurtful life experience to them.

Often gamers fly off the candle from their social environment. Hanging out with friends, traveling, exploring the world and meeting new people are replaced by a virtual world full of unrealistic characters. Instead, players prefer to stay in their rooms, spending hours trying to complete an achievement or overcoming an obstacle.

Last but not least, there are failures at school or at the workplace. Gamers who are addicted to playing usually stop being productive because their mind is somewhere in the game even when they are not playing. All those assignments and tasks transform into annoying duties which need to be done. The lack of motivation, mixed with disinterest makes the perfect formula for a failure at school or at work.

Cortex raises $15M to Helps Development Teams Wrangle Their Microservices  https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/11/18/cortex-raises-15m-to-helps-development-teams-wrangle-their-microservices/ Thu, 18 Nov 2021 15:04:24 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=74967 ...]]> Cortex is a startup that helps engineering teams get improved visibility into the Rube Goldberg machine that is their microservices architecture and improve their overall development practices around it. Today the company announced that it has raised a $15 million Series A funding round led by Tiger Global and Sequoia Capital, which led the company’s $2.5 million seed round.

Cortex says it experienced 10x customer growth since its launch in May 2021. Current customers include the likes of Grammarly, 8×8 and Rappi.

The  mission of the company is to build a system of record for engineering teams — or at least those that adopt modern development practices. The services catalog is at the heart of what Cortex does and it was also the first product the team launched. Now it is starting to build out its features around this catalog. Cortex co-founder and CTO Ganesh Datta said:

“We very quickly realized that once you have all these microservices being tracked in this catalog, you can do some interesting things there.”

The goal is to give engineering leaders insights into the quality of their services, but also to help the engineers themselves understand what services are available and what their status is.

With today’s announcement, the company is also launching its Service Creation tool. It gives developers a basic scaffold for new services based on their own templates.

Also new with today’s release are new team features to help improve cross-team collaboration and developer onboarding.
