Concurrently, ValueAct Capital Management plans to engage in discussions about future strategies, addressing the current financial challenges faced by Disney.

In a parallel development, hedge fund Blackwells Capital, aligning with CEO Robert Iger’s initiatives, is advocating for three candidates to join Disney’s board. These candidates aim to reinforce Iger’s strategy and provide an alternative perspective to Trian Fund Management.

The combined endorsements from ValueAct and Blackwells intensify the pressure on Trian Fund Management, urging them to present a more compelling alternative vision for the company’s future.

Since returning to his position in late 2022, CEO Robert Iger has faced persistent challenges from Trian. During that period, Disney, led by Iger’s successor Bob Chapek, incurred significant losses in its streaming services and released a series of underwhelming films. Consequently, 8,000 employees were laid off, with the primary objective being a cost-saving measure of approximately $7.5 billion.

Trian Fund Management, holding around $3 billion in Disney stock, equating to 1.8% of outstanding shares, remains a key player in these strategic discussions.

Morfit said Wednesday that Disney has the best intellectual property, sports brand and theme park assets, and can lead the media industry forward as legacy technologies transition to digital platforms. Iger said the company has had “very constructive” conversations with ValueAct over the past year.

Disney’s shares, which have seen a modest 2% increase in the past year, remained relatively stable at $90.46 in New York on Wednesday morning.

For the upcoming shareholder meeting, typically held in spring, Blackwells is putting forth three nominees: Jessica Schell, a former Warner Bros. executive specializing in content distribution; Craig Hatkoff, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival; and Leah Solivan, the founder of TaskRabbit Inc.

Blackwells Onshore I LLC, with a beneficial ownership of 9,850 shares, and Jason Aintabi, Blackwells’ chief investment officer holding 56,600 shares, along with Blackwells Capital LLC’s ownership of 56,600 shares, are integral to these nominations.

Disney has stated its intention to review Blackwells’ nominees and provide a recommendation to the board. Meanwhile, Disney’s nominations for board additions include Morgan Stanley Chairman James Gorman and seasoned media executive Jeremy Darroch.

Trian, expressing openness to other shareholders aiding in the company’s improvement, emphasizes the need for Nelson Peltz and Matthew Rasulo as independent voices and catalysts for essential changes, believing they can benefit long-suffering Disney shareholders.

Dose of Inspiration: Top Movies for Good Managers https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/10/10/dose-of-inspiration-top-movies-for-good-managers/ Tue, 10 Oct 2023 11:17:49 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=111993 ...]]> One of the main responsibilities of a team leader is not only to be responsible for completing his team’s tasks as well as meeting deadlines, but also to make sure that the working atmosphere is pleasant and free from tension, misunderstanding and conflict.

Every manager wants to be good, but before we ask anything of ourselves and others, we need to ask ourselves, “What makes a good manager and how can we improve our own version of our professional self?”

Today, there are plenty of online courses, seminars, tutorials on the internet that teach you to be better at what you do and to be the best manager you can be. Yes, the list of endless training and self-development courses is endless, and you can even watch the best TED talks on leadership. But how much can they really motivate and touch you? Did you know that you can learn valuable lessons about how to be a good manager from the movies too?

In this article, we’ve put together a list of the best movies that all managers are advised to watch, according to Recruiter. Movies that will show them how patience and perseverance are the foundation of good leadership.

Steve Jobs
This film showcases the career of Steve Jobs, from the introduction of the first Macintosh to the revolutionary iMac. Watching this film, we will see how Steve Jobs used his controversial leadership style to deal with personal issues and challenges within his company.

Why should you watch it?
Did you know that Steve Jobs had some glaring weaknesses, from his uncompromising attitude to his impatient demeanor, that are not particularly advisable or exemplary. But one of Steve Jobs’ most distinctive traits to pay attention to is his constant striving for perfection – something every manager should comb for. Steve Jobs is also known as someone who always motivated his colleagues to dream big. And although he is no longer with us, his management style and professionalism will remain a good example of successful leadership.

Frost/Nixon
We have to accept the fact that no manager is perfect. We all make mistakes, but the important thing is to admit them. Richard Nixon’s attempt to cover up the Watergate scandal led to the end of his presidency. He agreed to be interviewed by David Frost to atone for his guilt, but after hours of debate and questions, he caved in under pressure and was brought to trial.

Why you should watch
Honesty is the best policy – something Nixon learned the hard way. But you can spare yourself those difficulties. It’s important to know that as a leader, it’s okay to communicate what’s going on and be transparent. Nixon’s example teaches us that if you do something wrong, admit your mistakes and move on.

Alien
The plot of this film tells of a spaceship being attacked by an alien creature that devastates the crew. This sci-fi horror film may not be an obvious choice for future executives, but hear us out.

Why should it be watched?
During this crisis, crew member Ellen Ripley intervenes. She keeps her cool during the ordeal, sticks to her guns, devises attack strategies on the spot, and successfully handles the crisis, coming out alive against all odds. This film shows how even in times of crisis, economic instability, challenges and problems among team members, a good manager must remain calm and make the best decision no matter what.

Stay tuned this week for part two of Top Films for Good Managers.

Hollywood Protests Again, This Time Against Video Game Companies https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/09/04/hollywood-protests-again-this-time-against-video-game-companies/ Mon, 04 Sep 2023 08:51:03 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=110665 ...]]> The union representing actors in the US could launch a second strike against major video game companies, the BBC reports.

The negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and companies such as Activision and Electronic Arts had reached an “impasse”, particularly over wage increases and artificial intelligence.

For almost two months now, Hollywood has been on strike against major television and film companies.

A spokesman for the game companies said both sides are seeking a fair settlement.

The decision on possible strike action against video game companies will be made between September 5 and 25.

Hollywood’s largest union, representing 160,000 film and TV actors, wants protection from artificial intelligence – which the actors say poses a threat to the future of work and their careers.

“Once again artificial intelligence is putting our members in jeopardy of reducing their opportunity to work. And once again, SAG-AFTRA is standing up to tyranny on behalf of its members”, the union’s president, American actress Fran Drescher, said.

The union has a separate contract with the big video game companies that was due to expire in November. But it was extended by a year to allow negotiations to continue.

In a statement to the BBC, Audrey Cooling, a spokeswoman for the 10 video game firms involved in the negotiations, said all parties were seeking a “fair contract” that reflected the work of the performers.

More than 50 days and weeks of failed negotiations have led to serious concerns in film and television productions worldwide.

Screenwriters also walked off the job in May over concerns about pay, working conditions and the industry’s use of artificial intelligence.

SAG-AFTRA last went on strike against video game companies in 2016. That strike lasted 11 months.

Top 5 Best Movies for Programmers with Angelina Jolie, Jonny Lee Miller and Other Celebrities https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/08/31/top-5-best-movies-for-programmers-with-angelina-jolie-jonny-lee-miller-and-other-celebrities/ Thu, 31 Aug 2023 08:04:07 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=110577 ...]]> When someone says “programming” out loud, it inevitably evokes deep curiosity and mystery in those across the room who have not yet plumbed its depths and are not familiar with the meaning of the profession of “programmer.” Programming is steadily gaining popularity and today if you master this #tech craft, you become a valuable asset to companies because you possess a skill that is becoming increasingly necessary for our modern lives. For people outside the tech industry, however, programming can be a foreign concept.

In this article, we’ve chosen to list five of the best programming movies presented by Live for film starring Jolie and other famous actors, whose plots would captivate even those who have no idea what Python or Java is, for example. Films that will help people outside the tech world be able to better understand the power of this unique craft.

Top 5 Best Movies for Programmers

The Social Network (2010)
“The Social Network is a film about the rise of one of the world’s most recognisable figures, Mark Zuckerberg, and the founding of Facebook. The film was directed by David Fincher and starring Jesse Eisenberg and won an astonishing three awards at the 83rd annual Academy Awards.

The film follows the story of Mark Zuckerberg, who creates two successive versions of his famous social networking site. After the initial launch of “thefacebook” the site quickly became popular. Despite numerous legal battles, Zuckerberg began the process of building the new and improved social media platform that was destined to bring him the success that the world recognizes today.

The genius of the film lies in its careful visualization of the intense programming process. Viewers can see the power of programming through Zuckerberg’s complex code and the revolutionary results it produces. The film may not provide an in-depth guide to programming, but it creates an impression of the reality of the lives of programmers that those who are not outside of this world will understand, and those who have already immersed themselves in it will recognize.

Hackers (1995)
“Hackers” is one of the earliest feature films about programming. The film is set in New York City and follows a group of clever and skilled hackers who attempt to crack a large computer system. Released in 1995, the film was an instant hit and helped establish the subculture of hackers and programmers.

The film follows the story of a group of young hackers, played by Johnny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie and Matthew Lillard, who attempt to hack into a large computer system that, if broken, could have disastrous consequences. Viewers go through an interesting and educational journey as they witness the characters solve complex problems and navigate computer security systems. Moreover, “Hackers” introduces early concepts of the Internet. The film also contains some exciting scenes that take place in a computer environment and play a huge role in keeping the viewers’ interest.

The Imitation Game (2014)
The Imitation Game is a thrilling historical drama directed by Morten Tyldnin and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the British mathematician, Alan Turing. The film follows Turing’s life as he attempts to crack The Enigma code during World War II. This feat of programming genius was a significant win for the British forces and allowed them access to vital intelligence.

The movie follows Turing’s struggles as he attempts to create a machine for decrypting Nazi forces’ communications. After years of intense programming and dedication, the machine that he created manages to break the code. It was one of the most remarkable successes of the war period and brought Turing international recognition.

The Imitation Game offers a detailed and in-depth look at Turing’s career and his extraordinary coding skills. He was a genius and a hero, and this movie rightfully showcases his accomplishments.

Silicon Valley (2014-2019)
Silicon Valley is a smash hit HBO television series. It is one of the most celebrated programming movies of recent times. Created by Mike Judge and now in its sixth season, the show follows the story of a group of gifted engineers and entrepreneurs as they attempt to launch their software company.

The show is great at providing an inside look of the tech industry. The characters are smart, funny, and resourceful. They are also really good at programming and the audience is provided with a realistic yet entertaining look at the coding process. Through the show, viewers not only witness the power of this craft, but the enterprising spirit that comes with it.

The show definitely serves as a great motivation for young programmers and tech enthusiasts. It is certainly one of the best shows that HP ever produced.

Code: Debugging the Gender Gap (2015)
Code: Debugging the Gender Gap is a documentary about the lack of gender diversity in the tech industry. The film brings light to the fact that despite its growth and prestige, the tech industry still has a large gender gap.

The documentary follows the story of a number of successful women already in the industry, and the difficulties they faced to even make it. Despite the obvious talent, resilience, and ingenuity of the women featured in the film, the audience can still feel the lack of gender representation in the industry.

The movie also makes some great points about the power of programming and the lack of women in the industry. It serves as a reminder that even though strides are being made, change can’t come soon enough.

What is the conclusion?
From entertaining protagonists and gripping narrative sequences, to thoughtful observations about the impact of gender representation in the tech world, the five movies discussed here are invaluable resources for understanding the power of programming.

Whether you’re just a curious observer of the tech industry or a budding programmer looking for some inspiration, these five films should be at the top of your watch list. They will not only provide a glimpse of what programming can really do, they’ll also show its complexity and potential – the potential that lies in us.

If you’re interested in a career with .NET, be sure to check out the opportunities here.

You can share your opinion about these films or recommend other interesting productions that would be useful for people in the programming world.

George Clooney, Tom Cruise and Many Other Celebrities Protest Against AI Breakthrough in Hollywood https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/07/27/george-clooney-tom-cruise-and-many-other-celebrities-protest-against-ai-breakthrough-in-hollywood/ Thu, 27 Jul 2023 07:09:57 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=109486 ...]]> Netflix has placed an ad for a product manager of a machine learning platform with an annual salary of $300,000 to $900,000, while at the same time actors and writers are striking for fair pay and protection from the encroachment of artificial intelligence, The Guardian reports. According to the Screen Actors Guild (Sag-Aftra), 87% of actors in the guild are paid less than $26,000 a year.

The use of artificial intelligence in the creation of movies and TV shows – to write scripts, generate actor likenesses, or reduce the cost of creative work – has been the most contentious topic in negotiations between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and Sag and the Writers Guild of America (WGA).

The writers went on strike in May, with many popular actors including Tom Cruise and George Clooney joining earlier this month. It’s the first joint strike since the 1960s and threatens to change Hollywood forever.

The post, first reported by The Intercept, is something new that aims to “increase the use of our machine learning platform,” billed as “the foundation of all this innovation.” The post, however, lists vague qualifications related to machine learning, but hints at the company’s more far-reaching goals for artificial intelligence in “all areas of business.” A separate “machine learning” section on the company’s website says it will use AI to “shape our catalogue of films and TV shows by learning the features that make content successful”, and to “optimise the production of original films and TV shows”.

This isn’t the only new AI position sought by Netflix. The Intercept reported that the company is also looking to hire a technical director for generative AI at its game studio for a pay of up to $650,000 a year. Artificial intelligence can create text, images and video from input that can be used to create original content or for advertising purposes.

Earlier this month, Netflix premiered the new Spanish dating reality series “Deep Fake Love,” in which scans of participants’ faces and bodies are used to create “deepfake” simulations of themselves, and the company’s games division uses AI to create narratives and dialogue.

However, according to the AMPTP, the breakthrough of Artificial Intelligence across the film industry will change the perception of cinema forever and leave thousands of talented actors out of work, including celebrity darlings around the world.

Samsung Starts Mass Production of Cutting-Edge Memory Chips https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/05/29/samsung-starts-mass-production-of-cutting-edge-memory-chips/ Mon, 29 May 2023 08:40:10 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=107134 ...]]> Samsung Electronics has begun mass production of “the industry’s most advanced” DDR5 DRAM memory chips based on 12nm technology, Neowin reports. The main focus of the new chips are improvements in power consumption and wafer performance.

The company says the new 12nm-class DRAM consumes 23% less power than the previous generation. This offers IT companies a reduction in power consumption and carbon footprint in their servers and data centers. Samsung explains that such efficiency gains are made possible by a new material with a high dielectric constant that helps increase the capacity of the cells.

“With differentiated technology, Samsung’s industry-leading 12nm DDR5 DRAM delivers exceptional performance and energy efficiency. Our newest DRAM reflects our continued commitment to leading the DRAM market, not only with high-performance, high-capacity products that meet the demand of the large-scale computing market, but also by bringing to market next-generation solutions that support greater performance.”

commented the company.

Samsung’s 16Gb DDR5 DRAM memory chips operate at a maximum speed of 7.2 Gbps, which roughly means processing two 30GB UHD movies in one second. The manufacturer completed the compatibility evaluation with AMD last December. It is currently working with other technology companies to support an ever-growing list of next-generation computing applications and services.

Robert Kyncl Urged Streaming Services to Raise Subscription Prices https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/03/10/robert-kyncl-urged-streaming-services-to-raise-subscription-prices/ Fri, 10 Mar 2023 09:50:26 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=102896 ...]]> Shortly after Spotify livestreamed its over two-hour “Stream On” conference, at which it announced a host of new initiatives but no subscription price hike in the US, Kinkle gave a talk at Morgan Stanley. Without mentioning Spotify, the world’s largest streaming subscription service, by name, Kinkle noted that if the price of an individual monthly streaming subscription were adjusted for inflation, it would cost $13.25 instead of $10, Variety reports.

Warner Music’s new CEO Robert Kinkle brings a look from the other side of the music industry’s top. He was head of the business at YouTube, where he led a fundamental change in the giant’s relationship with the music industry by introducing a paid subscription music service, and at Netflix, where he led the company’s transition from DVD to streaming.

Over the past few years, almost every conversation has been about raising subscription prices. Milana Lewis, CEO of distribution and payments platform Stem, told Variety as recently as this past summer that all prices are going up, and music platforms continue to make it easier for their users by offering all sorts of low-cost subscriptions Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Deezer have already raised the prices of their services, but others are staying with the same monthly price of $10 in the U.S. as at the very beginning, Variety reports.

“I do think that music is undervalued, and I think it’s underappreciated in the markets. This is not my opinion: If you take the U.S., the price that the user pays per hour of consumption of music is half of what they pay for movies and TV shows on streaming services. I’m not even counting cable TV, where the ARPU is insanely higher than that — but just streaming. So right there, it’s 50% undervalued today”,

said Robert Kyncl.

After acknowledging that the initial low prices were essential to the resurgence of an industry whose value had halved due to illegal file-sharing, and that some services had begun to raise prices, he said Spotify was now the lowest form of entertainment where monetisation was available. He believes music is the entertainment with the highest affinity, greater than movies and TV shows, because it is used the most. Therefore, it also has the highest form of engagement, the highest formal affinity and the lowest cost per hour, which in his view this does not seem right.

Comcast Еnds Free Peacock Access for Xfinity Subscribers https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/02/14/comcast-ends-free-peacock-access-for-xfinity-subscribers/ Tue, 14 Feb 2023 12:30:27 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=101241 ...]]> Peacock has now discontinued the free tier of its standalone service.

Comcast subscribers are about to lose a great privilege: free access to Peacock streaming. Since it launched in April 2020, the ad-supported version of Peacock Premium has been provided free to Xfinity TV and broadband customers.

As of April 3, it will no longer be offered to new subscribers, and as of June 26, existing customers will no longer receive it, NBCUniversal confirmed to Variety. Engadget wrote this on the subject.

The news was first noted on Reddit via screenshots, which posted more details.

“Customers will be presented with details of the discounted offer within the Peacock app. Stay tuned for offer details and more information.”

, reads an internal message.

NBCU has also sent messages to customers that they will be able to purchase Peacock Premium at a discounted price, which has not yet been determined.

The company’s plan has always been to phase out free access to Peacock for Comcast customers, a spokesperson told Variety.

By next year, the company aims to reach 100,000 hours of programming, spread among original series, licensed TV, movies, live sports and more. The most famous original hit is currently Rian Johnson’s “Poker Face,” and it also airs popular classic TV programs like “The Office.”

Is Generative Artificial Intelligence Changing Hollywood Forever? https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/01/25/is-generative-artificial-intelligence-changing-hollywood-forever/ Wed, 25 Jan 2023 10:31:52 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=99342 ...]]> Generative artificial intelligence is bringing the biggest changes to movies and videos in 100 years, and it’s affecting everyone’s favorite Hollywood, tech.eu reports.

But first – what does it actually represent?

Generative AI is a subfield of machine learning, used mostly in text-to-speech and text-to-design software.

Seeing your work ruined – the frustration of filmmakers

Co-CEO and founder of the neural network lab Flawless Scott Mann, a Hollywood director and producer who has worked with Hollywood’s top actors, expresses his concerns about the interference of artificial intelligence in filmmaking.

“I had written a script with the actors, directed it, edited it, adjusted it and been so careful with not just the words, but the nuance of the sound of a word or the inflexion in what’s implied or, the detail of expression. And then to see it ruined or almost like a caricature with all the wrong dialogue – it was awful.”

said Scott Mann.

The solution

The action he took was the development of his company’s own software called TrueSync. Through a process Flawless calls “vubbing,” he makes the actor’s mouth movements match the dubbed dialogue when the film is translated into another language.

Generative artificial intelligence is applied to videos to create something that didn’t exist before, using very basic training data of the original to make it as real as the original.
For Mann, it’s a way to make the speech authentic and capture the nuances of the actor.

The company is currently working with studios in the area of post-production editing.

F-bombs are the enemy of film censors

The company has discovered a second use case for its technology – removing obscene words from film footage.

Mann notes that the film industry already has frameworks in place on issues such as film rights, permissions, compensation and consent, and also that it is working on updating them to adapt to new technologies.

AI replaces humans?

Mann notes that voiceovers won’t go away anytime soon.

“Synthetic audio is not at the stage where there are nuances to make it better than a human. And that’s going to be the case for some time.”

Mann believes that in the next five years, more filmmaking tools will emerge that will allow film technicians to bring things to the post-production environment that were previously confined to the sets.

Although Flawless is developing software for high-level use cases, such as the IMAX cinematic experience, there is an opportunity to push it into a variety of sectors in the future, including B2C and YouTube.

The future of film production in doubt

According to Mann, reducing production costs will not only improve film production, but also increase quality and expand audiences.

With each passing day, artificial intelligence is becoming more and more preferred and taking over all industries, even the beloved Hollywood, which very soon might not be as we have always known it.
