In a blog post, Google made clear its intentions to comply with new EU technology rules that could affect some companies’ revenues.

Under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which the company must comply with by March 7, Google is required to treat competing services and products the same as its own when ranking them in search results.

“We will introduce dedicated units that include a group of links to comparison sites from across the web, and query shortcuts at the top of the search page to help people refine their search, including by focusing results just on comparison sites,” Google said in its blog post.

Competing comparison sites are the biggest critics of Google’s search policy. A few years ago, the company paid a €2.42 billion fine for breaking EU antitrust rules.

“For categories like hotels, we will also start testing a dedicated space for comparison sites and direct suppliers to show more detailed individual results including images, star ratings and more. These changes will result in the removal of some features from the search page, such as the Google Flights unit,” it said.

In the upcoming weeks, Android users will experience various updates that facilitate seamless transitions between default search engines or browsers on their phones. Additionally, individuals utilizing Google services and products will have the option to transfer their data to a third-party application or service.

Can you surprise us, Mr. Musk? X Will Collect Users’ Biometric Data https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/09/01/can-you-surprise-us-mr-musk-x-will-collect-users-biometric-data/ Fri, 01 Sep 2023 13:19:24 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=110607 ... Social network X, formerly known as Twitter, will begin collecting users’ biometric data, according to its new privacy policy, TechCrunch reports. The company will collect information about users’ jobs and education. The policy page also states that the change will go into effect on September 29.

The idea dates back to when the social platform had its old, familiar Twitter name and is part of Elon Musk’s plan to turn Twitter (now X) into “the app for everything”.

“Based on your consent, we may collect and use your biometric information for safety, security, and identification purposes,” the updated policy reads.

Biometric data can be extracted from both the identity card and the image for matching purposes.

“This will additionally help us tie, for those that choose, an account to a real person by processing their government issued ID. This will also help X fight impersonation attempts and make the platform more secure”, X said in a statement, TechCrunch reported.

Although X hasn’t specified what it means by biometric information, it is usually used to describe a person’s physical characteristics, such as their face or fingerprints. X also hasn’t provided any details about how it plans to collect it.

Last month, ex. Twitter was named in a proposed class action alleging that the company improperly captured, stored and used Illinois residents’ biometric data, including facial scans, without consent.

“We may collect and use your personal information (such as your employment history, educational history, employment preferences, skills and abilities, job search activity and engagement, and so on) to recommend potential jobs for you, to share with potential employers when you apply for a job, to enable employers to find potential candidates, and to show you more relevant advertising,” the updated policy reads.

Perhaps this would largely reassure users and even make people like the idea of collecting this type of data. But is there something deeper behind this? It remains to be seen.

In the meantime, some interesting facts about biometrics:
Did you know that since ancient times, different nations have used biometrics for recognition and identification. In Babylon, China, Japan, Assyria, etc. fingerprints were used in making commercial transactions, marriage and other contracts.

And more…
The first attempt at a biometric relatively new identification system was created by Edward. Р. Henry and Francis Guilton included a fingerprint identification method, and the method itself was called – “fingerprint copy”. Interestingly, it was introduced first in India in 1876 and then in England in 1901, and within a few years was successfully integrated in almost all countries of the world.

Xbox X Series Visual Update Disappointing Users? https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/03/31/xbox-x-series-visual-update-disappointing-users/ Fri, 31 Mar 2023 06:41:46 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=103909 ... Larry Hryb shared on Twitter that an update is starting to roll out across a subset of Xbox consoles to revamp the search page with several quality-of-life improvements, such as visible category filters and gallery-style search results, TechRadar reports. However, the update disappointed the majority of users.

Although this is a visual improvement to the search page, in response to the Twitter message announcing the update, some users didn’t wait long and expressed their disappointment with the new updates. A few users even took the liberty of openly stating that they didn’t see much point to it, as the store page for both the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S now looks significantly better from the home screen.

Despite the views expressed by users, no further update in this regard is expected to be released for now. Considering also the fact that the console is now almost three years old, it is unlikely that users will be enjoying a new dashboard anytime soon.

Regarding the new search page update, the UI is sleeker in some areas, which could easily translate into a redesign of the dashboard, and it helps the console look good.

While the current Xbox X Series and S Series dashboard is easy to navigate, an updated dashboard to match the expectations of the current generation would help further define the console. Users are left questioning why Microsoft hasn’t yet followed suit with the PS5’s UI, which was a smart and quick evolution of the PS4.

Microsoft Investigates Multiple Outlook Access Problems https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/02/07/microsoft-investigates-multiple-outlook-access-problems/ Tue, 07 Feb 2023 15:14:17 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=100556 ... Microsoft said it is investigating problems with its Outlook email service as users encounter issues accessing, sending or searching for emails on the platform.

Late Monday, there were more than 2,000 instances of people reporting problems with Outlook, according to Downdetector.com, which tracks outages by collecting status reports from sources including bugs submitted by users of its platform.

“Users primarily hosted in the North American region attempting to access Outlook.com may be unable to send, receive, or search email. Additional functionality such as Calendar consumed by other services such as Microsoft Teams would also be affected,”

Microsoft said in an update on its status page.

The web monitoring firm showed that reports dropped to 351 incidents of people raising complaints as of 2:10 ET.
A “recent change” led to the issue and the company was working to restart portions of the affected infrastructure in order to restore service, Microsoft said in a tweet.

Google Asks Employees to Test Potential ChatGPT Competitors https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/02/03/google-asks-employees-to-test-potential-chatgpt-competitors/ Fri, 03 Feb 2023 07:44:40 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=100045 ... Google employees are testing potential competitors to ChatGPT, including its own chatbot “Apprentice Bard” – CNBC reported, citing sources and internal communication.

The bot is said to use Google’s own language technology called LaMDA, or Language Model for Dialogue Applications.

This comes just a few weeks after the tech giant’s leadership announced that it had issued a “code red” for the rise of ChatGPT, which has been making waves lately for being able to generate human-like written text.

Apprentice Bard appears to work in a similar way to ChatGPT, as users can ask a question in a dialog box and get an answer, according to CNBC. Users can also give feedback about the answer to the bot.

When asked if there would be further layoffs at Google – which laid off 12,000 employees in January – Apprentice Bard responded that it was “unlikely” there would be another round of layoffs in 2023, CNBC reported, citing an internally circulated example.

Publicly available information shows that Alphabet’s – Google’s parent company – revenue grew 41% in 2021, while Alphabet’s Class A shares have fallen 32% since January 2022.

In addition to Apprentice Bard, Google is testing other AI-powered products, including a search page.

“We believe AI is a foundational and transformative technology that is hugely beneficial to people, businesses and communities, and as outlined in our AI principles, we must consider the broader societal impacts these innovations can have.”

said Lily Lin, Google spokesperson.

Google did not comment specifically on the projects reported by CNBC, but told Insider that it has long focused on developing and deploying AI to improve people’s lives.

Google’s John Mueller Advises Developers for Better SEO Optimization https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/01/20/google-s-john-mueller-advises-developers-on-better-seo-optimization/ Fri, 20 Jan 2023 10:05:42 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=98868 ... John Mueller, who is Senior Search Analyst at Google gave a useful tip to all developers with which SEO optimization of sites would be quite good, writes Search Engine Journal.

He suggests that the HTML section of the
element should be “clean” to ensure that search engines can fully understand the website in question.

Mueller shared this advice in a Reddit thread, where a user asked a question about whether pasting HTML code could cause SEO problems.

In fact, the answer is that it can. The placement of HTML code is in danger of adversely impacting good SEO efforts if it doesn’t appear at the top of the page.

John Mueller uses the term HTML Headers. But the
element isn’t ordinarily referred to that way.

    • HTML Headers are generally understood (as informal jargon) to reference the <heading> element (H1, H2, H3, etc.).

Header Elements are a specific HTML element known as
, which contains the menu, logo, etc .

Head HTML element is a section at the top of the HTML document with metadata about the document itself (title, meta description, etc.).

So when Mueller references “headers” he is specifically discussing the
element.

Mueller’s goal is to emphasize the importance of keeping the
section of the HTML document tidy and not cluttered with scripts that can be placed elsewhere.

“The html headers (
) should be pretty much on top. I’d move any JS to below the HTML headers, and check with the rendering tool in search console that the JS doesn’t mess up the
section.”

he further advises.

In his view, the placement of the main content is not that important, although it’s crucial that the
section is clean and well-organized for Googlebot to understand it properly.

“For content, it doesn’t matter that much, but since the header material is for machine-readable information that has been verified to be in a specific part of the page, it really needs to be clean at the top.”,

Mueller continues.

When creating a website, it is best to use the async and defer attributes in a strategic way that allows for the best rendering and interactivity at the fastest page speed for users. The reason for this is that JavaScript can slow down the rendering of the webpage while it loads, resulting in a poor user experience.

HTML can be rendered first, and this allows the user to see the content while JavaScript loads in the background with the appropriate use of the defer and async attributes.

Microsoft released an OOB update https://devstyler.io/blog/2022/01/19/microsoft-released-an-oob-update/ Wed, 19 Jan 2022 15:42:40 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=79299 ... An out-of-band update was released by Microsoft. Its aim was to fix some issues which were caused by last week’s monthly patching cycle on Patch.

Some security reconstructions were provided in the January update in Windows 11 and Windows 10. However, unexpectedly there were problems such as restarting the Domain Controller and VPN connections using L2TP failing.

The biggest problem was being stuck in a boot loop of Windows Server 2012 while some other versions experienced broken Windows VPN clients. Not only that but some hard drivers appeared as RAW format or unusable. A major number of IT admins were obliged to return the previous updates and that action caused many servers to be vulnerable.

IT admins are provided with access to Microsoft’s update catalog which gives them an opportunity to load into Windows Server Update Services. However, the admins are in a situation where they have to manually download and load the OOB update as it is not included in the WSUS catalog. On Twitter, Windows Update’s page posted:

“An out-of-band update has been released to address issues related to VPN connectivity, Windows Server Domain Controllers restarting, Virtual Machine start failures, and ReFS-formatted removable media failing.”

However, if you click the Windows Update icon on your computer, you may find some of these fixes available for Windows 11 and Windows 10 as an optional update.

The feature is called “followable web” and lets users follow the content creators they like on YouTube in a more easy way.

According to a Reddit user, a YouTube follow button has appeared in the address bar of YouTube pages. The new option makes its first steps and still, it doesn’t support all YouTube content creators. The feature is part of Edge’s “Collections” which allows users to see the latest posts from creators they like and follow.

At that moment, Microsoft is only testing the feature – “controlled rollouts”, as it is named by the company. However, the plans for the followable web option are not clear yet.
