They have different functions – from educational to entertainment. And although developing a mobile app is an enjoyable process, it needs a little more help, especially in choosing the right programming language.

Today, we’ll take a look at some of the basic programming languages needed to develop Android apps, according to Analytics Insight. And while Kotlin is the official language of the platform, that doesn’t limit the use of other languages.

Basic Programming Languages for Android App Development

JavaScript
Did you know JavaScript is the most used language on the internet. The increase in popularity of frameworks like jQuery, Angular, Vue, Svelte, and React.Js has increased the popularity of JavaScript. The nice thing about JavaScript is that it is a language that can be used to design front-end GUIs, back-end servers, and even mobile apps. You may create cross-platform apps for iOS and Android mobile devices using the well-liked JavaScript framework React Native. JavaScript is a fantastic option due to its widespread appeal and popularity.

Java
Initially, Java served as the official language for developing Android apps (Kotlin has since taken its place), and as a result, it is also the most popular language. Java is the most supported language by Google and is used to create many apps in the Play Store. In addition to all of this, Java has a fantastic online community for help. The Android Software Development Kit (SDK) raises the degree of complexity. Java could be difficult for novices, who would rather get started with something simpler and return to it later.

Dart
Dart’s primary selling point is that Google created it as a client-optimized language for quick programs on any platform. Dart’s primary goal is to facilitate UI creation for programmers by using features like hot-reload, which enables programmers to view changes immediately as they are made to the application. Dart is renowned for quick performance and for compiling machine code for ARM and x64 for mobile, desktop, and backend. And for web applications, JavaScript.

Gmail Will Deliver “Best Results”, Thanks to AI https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/06/06/gmail-will-deliver-best-results-thanks-to-ai/ Tue, 06 Jun 2023 08:30:48 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=107465 ...]]> Google is introducing a new AI-related feature for smartphone users, Business Insider reports. This was revealed in an Alphabet blog post, which says that Gmail users will soon see a “best results” tab when they search for old messages or attachments in their Gmail app.

The top results section will be assisted by Google’s machine learning algorithms, which the company says will use the search term, some recent emails and other “relevant factors” in order to find what the user is looking for.

Alphabet only mentions the mobile version of Gmail, so it’s unclear if the feature will be available for browsers as well.

Last month, Google announced that accounts that have been inactive for two years will be deleted along with all content, including inbox data.

The new feature is another example of Google’s commitment to bringing artificial intelligence to its products.

Apple to Report Its First Revenue Decline in History https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/05/05/apple-to-report-its-first-revenue-decline-in-history/ Fri, 05 May 2023 07:31:35 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=105787 ...]]> Apple has seen a slowdown in hardware sales among its flagship Mac computers and iPhone smartphones, but the company has good news in contrast, as it will see a surge in its services division, reports TheDesk.net.

The figures are part of Apple’s second fiscal quarter earnings, which cover the first three months of the calendar year. The tech giant’s total revenue for the quarter was $94.8 billion, down 3% compared to the second quarter of 2022, and it cited lower electronics sales as part of the reason.

Apple, which so far hasn’t had massive employee layoffs, will report its first-ever decline in revenue across all product lines, even as demand and production for iPhones in China recovered from the disruption caused by last year’s pandemic.

The Difference
Apple’s sales of computers, phones, tablets, watches and other hardware fell to $73.9 billion in the quarter from $77.5 billion reported in 2022. The sales slowdown in the first three months is not unusual as consumers cut back on spending after the holidays.

Apple’s iPhone line is still the best-selling product with over $51.3 billion in sales in the second quarter of 2023, up from $50.7 billion last year. Mac sales declined to $7.12 billion, down about $3 billion from 2022.

“We are pleased to report an all-time record in services and a March quarter record for iPhone despite the challenging macroeconomic environment, and to have our installed base of active devices reach an all-time high. We continue to invest for the long term and lead with our values, including making major progress toward building carbon neutral products and supply chains by 2030”,

Said in a statement Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple.

Although the company posted the first revenue decline in its history, the forecasts and reactions are not black-eyed. Luca Maestri, who is Apple’s CFO, said there was an improvement in the company’s overall business performance compared to the December quarter. In the last three months, the company has been able to return over $23 billion to its shareholders.

Apple confrontation with the Netherlands and why it matters https://devstyler.io/blog/2022/02/23/apple-confrontation-with-the-netherlands-and-why-it-matters/ Wed, 23 Feb 2022 13:38:45 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=81620 ...]]> In 2021 the Dutch equivalent of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission became one of the first regulators in the world to require Apple to give people multiple payment options for using dating apps on their smartphones, reported Forbes

So, what happens now is that Apple has proposed making a standoff between the tech giant and Dutch bureaucrats. Apple has proposed a workaround, but the regulator calls Apple’s attitude “regrettable” and has issued weekly fines of 25 million euros. Apple notes that its clients’ security and convenience would be compromised if it allowed this. The company also adds that they are currently complying with its legal obligations.

Apple’s response is revealing about how tech superpowers react to governments’ efforts to change the role of technologies.

More authorities worldwide want to change the way in which tech companies are working. The tech giants noted that they follow the laws wherever they operate, however, they also push back against governments and deflect or shape laws and regulations.

For instance, Forbes explained in an article that democracy advocates have criticized Facebook, Twitter, Apple, and Google for not doing more to push back against government efforts to censor political speech in countries like Vietnam, India, and Russia. Hence, the Netherlands became an unlikely high-stakes tech battleground starting in 2019, when the Authority for Consumers and Markets began investigating whether Apple’s app storefront broke the country’s laws against abuses of power.

According to some authorities, the tech giant unfairly uses our devices and digital economy by requiring the mandatory downloading of apps to be done via Apple Store. In that way, the company gets a commission of up to 30% on certain purchases while dictating the content that appears on our phones.

In fact, a lot of developers have claimed that they insist to have more options of what Apple stores can provide. For instance, Match Group, the U.S. company that owns Tinder, Match.com, and other dating services insists to have options that go around Apple’s store to direct people to pay for dating services, reported Forbes.

In response, a month ago Apple proposed a set of conditions that some app developers said was an antagonistic opposition of the Dutch regulator. Further explanation by Apple states that dating apps could use whatever payment system they want, however, the company insists to get a fee of 27 cents on each dollar of purchases that clients make through the app. They also require

Apple further explained that dating apps in the country could use any payment system they wanted, but that Apple deducts a fee of 27 cents on each dollar of purchases that people made in the app, and require the dating companies to hand over information and audit it.

Google revealed that we can expect Android games for Windows in 2022 https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/12/10/google-revealed-that-we-can-expect-android-games-for-windows-in-2022/ Fri, 10 Dec 2021 09:42:54 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=76387 ...]]> Does anyone remember when exactly Android came into this world?

It feels like yesterday when smartphones have just arrived, ready to change our lives. Since that moment, the development of all these smartphones and gadgets became really fast. Day after day, more and more novelties, upgrades, and innovations are pouring over us.

There is no doubt that Android games are one of the most exciting things, and playing them on Windows has been possible probably for as long as Android has existed, and all of this is thanks to projects such as Android x86 and Bluestacks.

Microsoft has been building an Android application layer into Windows. Its software is downloadable from the Amazon Appstore, and it seems that Google is already determined to create its own mechanism for playing Android games on PCs.

A surprising announcement was made by Google on Thursday night when The Game Awards took place. In 2022 we can expect a new application by Google, which will give its users the opportunity to play Android Games on their PCs, or at least this was revealed by the company.

Greg Hartrell, who is Google’s product director of games on Android and Google Play, told The Verge:

“This Google-built product brings the best of Google Play Games to more laptops and desktops, and we are thrilled to expand our platform for players to enjoy their favorite Android games even more.”

How does it work? Which games will be available? Maybe you are full of questions but at that point, the company isn’t saying much right now. However, Google admitted that the app was built without the use of existing technology from Microsoft, Bluestacks, or others. The only thing that is for sure is that the games will run locally on your PC and they will not be streamed from a cloud server. Also, the app will be compatible with Windows 10 and newer, but Microsoft’s virtualization layer for Android apps is only supported on Windows 11.

However, it seems as though Google is not actually interested in running standard Android apps on Windows, but Microsoft’s implementation supports both apps and games.

Here is the new Update On Meta’s Use of Face Recognition https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/11/04/here-is-the-new-update-on-meta-s-use-of-face-recognition/ Thu, 04 Nov 2021 15:51:50 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=74195 ...]]> In the coming weeks, Meta will shut down the Face Recognition system on Facebook as part of a company-wide move to limit the use of facial recognition in its products.

Hence, people who have opted in to its Face Recognition setting will no longer be automatically recognized in photos and video, because the facial recognition will be deleted.

More than a third of Facebook’s daily active users have opted in to our Face Recognition setting and are able to be recognized, and its removal will result in the deletion of more than a billion people’s individual facial templates.

For a long time, Facebook has also given people the option to be automatically notified when they appear in photos or videos posted by others, and provided recommendations for who to tag in photos. These features are also powered by the Face Recognition system which will be shutted down.

However, nobody want to doubt the power of facial recognition technology. For instance, it is very useful for people needing to verify their identity, or to prevent fraud and impersonation. Meta promises that they will still be working on improving these tools in the future.

We all know that there are many concerns about the place of facial recognition technology in society, and regulators are still in the process of providing a clear set of rules governing its use. From their point of view, Meta’s team believe that limiting the use of facial recognition to a narrow set of use cases is appropriate. This includes services that help people gain access to a locked account, verify their identity in financial products or unlock a personal device.

But like most challenges involving complex social issues, Meta’s team is aware that their approach  involves some difficult tradeoffs. For instance, the ability to tell a blind or visually impaired user that the person in a photo on their News Feed is their high school friend, or former colleague, is a valuable feature that makes the platforms more accessible. But it also depends on an underlying technology that attempts to evaluate the faces in a photo to match them with those kept in a database of people who opted-in. The following changes involve a company-wide move away from this kind of broad identification, and toward narrower forms of personal authentication.

Facial recognition can be particularly valuable when the technology operates privately on a person’s own devices. This method of on-device facial recognition, requiring no communication of face data with an external server, is most commonly deployed today in the systems used to unlock smartphones.

For potential future applications of technologies Meta will continue to be public about intended use, how people can have control over these systems and their personal data, and how they are living up to their responsible innovation framework. Ending the use of the existing Face Recognition system means the serviceswill be removed over the coming weeks, as will the setting allowing people to opt into the system.

This will lead to a number of changes:

  • The technology will no longer automatically recognize if people’s faces appear in Memories, photos or videos.
  • People will no longer be able to turn on face recognition for suggested tagging or see a suggested tag with their name in photos and videos they may appear in.
  • This change will also impact Automatic Alt Text (AAT), a technology used to create image descriptions for people who are blind or visually impaired. AAT currently identifies people in about 4% of photos. After the change, AAT will still be able to recognize how many people are in a photo, but will no longer attempt to identify who each person is using facial recognition.
  • If you have opted into the Face Recognition setting, Meta will delete the template used to identify you. If you have the face recognition setting turned off, there is no template to delete and there will be no change.

However, despite everything, Meta promises they will continue engaging in that conversation and working with the civil society groups and regulators who are leading this discussion.

Samsung Introduces Industry’s First Open-source Software Solution for CXL Memory Platform https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/10/07/samsung-introduces-industry-s-first-open-source-software-solution-for-cxl-memory-platform/ Thu, 07 Oct 2021 07:10:49 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=72832 ...]]> Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, today introduced the first open-source software solution, the Scalable Memory Development Kit (SMDK), that has been specially designed to support the Compute Express Link (CXL) memory platform. In May, Samsung unveiled the industry’s first CXL memory expander that allows memory capacity and bandwidth to scale to levels far exceeding what is possible in today’s server systems. Now, the company’s CXL platform is being extended beyond hardware to offer easy-to-integrate software tools, making CXL memory much more accessible to data centre system developers for emerging artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and 5G-edge markets.

The CXL interconnect is an open, industry-backed standard that enables different types of devices such as accelerators, memory expanders and smart I/O devices to work more efficiently when processing high-performance computational workloads. Cheolmin Park, vice president of the Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics noted:

“In order for data centre and enterprise systems to smoothly run next-generation memory solutions like CXL, development of corresponding software is a necessity. Today, Samsung is reinforcing its commitment toward delivering a total memory solution that encompasses hardware and software, so that IT OEMs can incorporate new technologies into their systems much more effectively.”

CXL memory adoption made easier without the need for application modifications

Samsung’s SMDK enables the main memory and the CXL memory expander to work together seamlessly in heterogeneous memory systems. The extensive software kit consists of libraries — sets of pre-built, reusable codes — and application programming interfaces (APIs) — the connections to access these software codes. Using the SMDK, system developers can easily incorporate CXL memory into advanced IT systems without having to modify existing application environments, or alternatively use it to optimize application software settings to suit special system needs.

Industry’s first software-defined memory management

The new SMDK also supports memory virtualization, allowing system designers to efficiently manage an expanded memory pool in shared memory architectures. Leveraging a proprietary Intelligent Tiering Engine, the SMDK can identify and configure the memory type, capacity and bandwidth that are most appropriate for each use case.

Samsung’s SMDK is now available on a limited basis for initial testing and optimization and will be open-sourced within the first half of next year. Samsung will continue to enhance its open-source SMDK as it closely collaborates with industry leaders in expanding the adoption of the CXL memory platform for broad use in AI, edge and cloud applications.

Visualizing the Critical Metals in a Smartphone https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/08/26/visualizing-the-critical-metals-in-a-smartphone/ Thu, 26 Aug 2021 08:51:30 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=67568 ...]]> In an increasingly connected world, smartphones have become an inseparable part of our lives. Over 60% of the world’s population owns a mobile phone and smartphone adoption continues to rise in developing countries around the world according to an article from Visual Capitalist

Infographic Credits: Visual Capitalist

While each brand has its own mix of components, whether it’s a Samsung or an iPhone, most smartphones can carry around 80% of the stable elements on the periodic table. But some of the vital metals to build these devices are considered at risk due to geological scarcity, geopolitical issues, and other factors.

Smartphone Part Critical Metal
Touch Screen indium
Display lanthanum; gadolinium; praseodymium; europium; terbium; dysprosium
Electronics nickel, gallium, tantalum
Casing nickel, magnesium
Battery lithium, nickel, cobalt
Microphone, speakers, vibration unit nickel, praseodymium, neodymium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium

Credits: Visual Capitalist

The University of Birmingham provides the data for this infographic which details all the critical metals that you carry in your pocket with your smartphone.

1. Touch Screen

Screens are made up of multiple layers of glass and plastic, coated with a conductor material called indium which is highly conductive and transparent. Indium responds when contacted by another electrical conductor, like our fingers.

When we touch the screen, an electric circuit is completed where the finger makes contact with the screen, changing the electrical charge at this location. The device registers this electrical charge as a “touch event”, then prompting a response.

2. Display

Smartphones screens display images on a liquid crystal display (LCD). Just like in most TVs and computer monitors, a phone LCD uses an electrical current to adjust the colour of each pixel. Several rare earth elements are used to produce the colours on screen.

3. Electronics

Smartphones employ multiple antenna systems, such as Bluetooth, GPS, and WiFi.

The distance between these antenna systems is usually small making it extremely difficult to achieve flawless performance. Capacitors made of the rare, hard, blue-grey metal tantalum are used for filtering and frequency tuning. Nickel is also used in capacitors and in mobile phone electrical connections. Another silvery metal, gallium, is used in semiconductors.

4. Microphone, Speakers, Vibration Unit

Nickel is used in the microphone diaphragm (that vibrates in response to sound waves). Alloys containing rare earths neodymium, praseodymium and gadolinium are used in the magnets contained in the speaker and microphone. Neodymium, terbium and dysprosium are also used in the vibration unit.

5. Casing

There are many materials used to make phone cases, such as plastic, aluminium, carbon fibre, and even gold. Commonly, the cases have nickel to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) and magnesium alloys for EMI shielding.

6. Battery

Unless you bought your smartphone a decade ago, your device most likely carries a lithium-ion battery, which is charged and discharged by lithium ions moving between the negative (anode) and positive (cathode) electrodes.

What’s Next?

Smartphones will naturally evolve as consumers look for ever-more useful features. Foldable phones, 5G technology with higher download speeds, and extra cameras are just a few of the changes expected. As technology continues to improve, so will the demand for the metals necessary for the next generation of smartphones.

Apple has a lot to get through this fall https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/08/23/apple-has-a-lot-to-get-through-this-fall/ Mon, 23 Aug 2021 07:58:55 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=67199 ...]]> Apple may host multiple product launch events this fall, reports claim, with new iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watch, operating systems, and services all scheduled for release.

Apple’s expanding product range

Apple often likes to position itself as a big company with an internal culture similar to a startup, but I do not know of any early-stage firms where the product matrix has grown so vast that they must actively consider multiple launch events.

It’s a very long way from Apple circa 1999, when Steve Jobs was able to describe Apple in a quadrant based on notebook and desktop, consumer, and pro product segments. While all of Apple’s products still just about fit in one table, the table is larger, and the company needs to schedule more time to discuss them all.

At today’s Apple, not only have the divisions between different quadrants become much more elastic, but the product range has expanded with wearables, services, a streaming TV offer, pro and consumer software, mobile devices and smartphones, with further product category expansion expected, particularly around health, AR, and transportation.

Apple also hosted multiple events last year, introducing the Apple Watch and new iPads in September, following up with the iPhone 12 and HomePod mini in October, and then blowing our minds with the first Apple Silicon Macs in November. That Apple now plans multiple launch events again makes sense, given how much it has to talk about. What do we expect the company to introduce?

Apple’s products this fall may include…

  • iPhone 13: 5.4-, 6.1- and 6.7-inch models as with iPhone 12. A smaller notch, faster A15 processor and improved AMOLED display. Expect cinematic video, photographic styles using AI to improve highlights, shadows, and so on. The device is expected to see strong demand and to boast more support for mmWave and maybe an in-screen Touch ID sensor.
  • iPad (Ninth generation): Slimmer bezels, larger display, faster A13 Bionic processor.
  • iPad mini 6: Slimmer bezels and larger display, faster processor.
  • iOS, tvOS, iPad OS, macOS, and watchOS.
  • 14- and 16-inch M1X MacBook Pro, revamped design, mini-LED displays, MagSafe and more.
  • Apple Watch Series 7: Redesigned with faster display and processors.
  • Third-generation AirPods, more like AirPods Pro with better audio technology.
  • A push behind Foundation and Apple TV.

The likely sequence might be:

September: iPhone event with AirPods and a push toward Apple TV.

October: An iPad event with Apple Watch and a push toward services, focused around health and fitness.

November: A Mac event, with a focus on pro apps and more insight into the company’s work around Apple Silicon.

Alternatively, Apple Insider speculates two events may take place in September, one featuring the new iPhone, another starring Apple’s other incoming products.

What’s coming for the enterprise?

While interest in the all-new iPhone is guaranteed, business purchasers will certainly want to look at the refreshed entry-level iPad and MacBook Pro.

For many, the new iPad with its faster processor and promised tight integration with Macs (Universal Control) will become a viable choice for deployment among mobile workers. We are already seeing mass deployment of M1-powered iPad Pro models, such as a recently announced move to equip all Delta Airlines pilots with these. For tasks where that level of performance is less critical, education and some enterprise markets may see the improved entry-level iPad as a viable choice. That iPad is meant to offer a similar look to that of Apple’s impressive iPad Air. Will it match its performance, too?

The M1X-powered MacBook Pros will enter an enterprise market in which Mac adoption is accelerating pace. Mass Mutual, ItalGas and Grab all recently confirmed major deployments, and they aren’t alone. Faster performance and industry-leading battery life will only reinforce that trend, and many executives will want to see what difference these machines might make to them.
