X Will Collect Users’ Biometric Data https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/09/01/can-you-surprise-us-mr-musk-x-will-collect-users-biometric-data/ Fri, 01 Sep 2023 13:19:24 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=110607 ...]]> Social network X, formerly known as Twitter, will begin collecting users’ biometric data, according to its new privacy policy, TechCrunch reports. The company will collect information about users’ jobs and education. The policy page also states that the change will go into effect on September 29.

The idea dates back to when the social platform had its old, familiar Twitter name and is part of Elon Musk’s plan to turn Twitter (now X) into “the app for everything”.

“Based on your consent, we may collect and use your biometric information for safety, security, and identification purposes,” the updated policy reads.

Biometric data can be extracted from both the identity card and the image for matching purposes.

“This will additionally help us tie, for those that choose, an account to a real person by processing their government issued ID. This will also help X fight impersonation attempts and make the platform more secure”, X said in a statement, TechCrunch reported.

Although X hasn’t specified what it means by biometric information, it is usually used to describe a person’s physical characteristics, such as their face or fingerprints. X also hasn’t provided any details about how it plans to collect it.

Last month, ex. Twitter was named in a proposed class action alleging that the company improperly captured, stored and used Illinois residents’ biometric data, including facial scans, without consent.

“We may collect and use your personal information (such as your employment history, educational history, employment preferences, skills and abilities, job search activity and engagement, and so on) to recommend potential jobs for you, to share with potential employers when you apply for a job, to enable employers to find potential candidates, and to show you more relevant advertising,” the updated policy reads.

Perhaps this would largely reassure users and even make people like the idea of collecting this type of data. But is there something deeper behind this? It remains to be seen.

In the meantime, some interesting facts about biometrics:
Did you know that since ancient times, different nations have used biometrics for recognition and identification. In Babylon, China, Japan, Assyria, etc. fingerprints were used in making commercial transactions, marriage and other contracts.

And more…
The first attempt at a biometric relatively new identification system was created by Edward. Р. Henry and Francis Guilton included a fingerprint identification method, and the method itself was called – “fingerprint copy”. Interestingly, it was introduced first in India in 1876 and then in England in 1901, and within a few years was successfully integrated in almost all countries of the world.

Donald Trump Is Back On Twitter After Being Scandalized With A Photo https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/08/25/donald-trump-is-back-on-twitter-after-being-scandalized-with-a-photo/ Fri, 25 Aug 2023 09:09:41 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=110437 ...]]> Former President Donald Trump tweeted a message for the first time in more than two years, breaking his long silence on the social platform, TechCrunch reports.

The reason for Trump’s first tweet since January 8, 2021, is his arrest in Atlanta on 13 felony charges related to election interference in the state of Georgia.

The former president, who is seeking re-election in 2024, tweeted shortly after his arrest photo went viral on social media.

Here’s what Trump wrote:

“I was ARRESTED today in the notoriously violent Fulton County Jail in Georgia, even though I have committed NO CRIME. If you can, please make a contribution to get Crooked Joe Biden out of the White House and SAVE AMERICA during this dark chapter in our nation’s history.”

Trump matched the call to action with the words “ELECTION INTERFERENCE, NEVER GIVE UP!” and a photo of himself that caused a furor on social media yesterday.

Musk, a day after promoting Trump’s interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, retweeted Trump with the words “Next Level”.

Musk’s endorsement has led consumers to question what the entrepreneur’s next move will be and whether he has any intentions of going into politics.

A Twist in the Lay Off Trend: Amazon Brings Back the Layoff Employee? https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/05/23/a-twist-in-the-lay-off-trend-amazon-brings-back-the-layoff-employee/ Tue, 23 May 2023 08:30:41 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=106619 ...]]> In January this year, an Amazon employee was laid off, but just a few months later made a surprise announcement on LinkedIn that he was rejoining the same company team, People Matters reports. Paige Cipriani shared on the social platform about her recent reassignment, revealing that she has returned as a product manager on the social marketing team where she previously worked.

“I am so happy to announce that on Monday I started back at Amazon on the Social Marketing team, the same team I was on before being laid off in January. I was re-hired, as a Product Marketing Manager, in a newly opened position so will be focusing on a different line of business than before. I feel so thankful to be back on such a great team and am looking forward to what this new (yet familiar) journey holds,” read her post.

Although the current occasion for a public statement is in a positive direction, a few months before, the Amazon employee shared his disappointment with the company’s decision and its layoff.

“Unfortunately, yesterday I woke up to the news that I was one of 18,000 employees laid off from Amazon. It is incredibly hard and I am still trying to process it all. I am sad because my journey at the company had just begun and I was working with some of the most incredibly smart people in the industry. I am still so grateful for the time I have spent there, the connections I have made and everything I learned. I am officially #opentowork looking for Social Marketing roles immediately. Thank you in advance for any connections, advice or opportunities you can offer! Feel free to message me here with leads”,

Shared by Paige Cipriani on LinkedIn in January.

Will the lay off trend turn positive?
Amazon laid off 500 of its employees in India recently. The layoffs affected various sectors of the company, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), human resources (HR) and support functions. We remind you that in March Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced the layoff of 9,000 employees worldwide, and in January the company also made layoffs that affected 18,000 employees worldwide.

Microsoft Closes Popular Social Platform for VR https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/01/24/microsoft-closes-popular-social-platform-for-vr/ Tue, 24 Jan 2023 09:55:06 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=99211 ...]]> Microsoft intends to shut down Altspace VR, a social virtual reality (VR) platform, on March 10 this year. Just a few days after announcing 10,000 job cuts worldwide as part of its reorganization process, the tech giant shared the news in a blog post.

The particular post explains that the company’s even bigger ambition now is a more open, accessible and safe form of immersion in the metaverse.

“Looking to the future, we see opportunities for VR to spread beyond consumers into enterprises. We hope to create a platform with Mesh that provides the most opportunities for everyone involved, including creators, partners and customers”

reads the post.

One of the first virtual reality social networking apps is AltspaceVR, which allows users to join 3D chat rooms, play games, watch movies and attend events using headsets and online platforms.

Microsoft acquired the firm as part of a goal to create its own mixed reality ecosystem when it was on the brink of failure in 2017 due to financial issues. The tech giant said customers can now pull their data and content from the VR platform as AltspaceVR has ceased operations.

With its Mesh platform, a tool for creating collaborative apps for users in augmented reality, Microsoft is still in the race for the metaverse.

A study suggests that TikTok shares your data more than any other apps https://devstyler.io/blog/2022/02/10/a-study-suggests-that-tiktok-shares-your-data-more-than-any-other-apps/ Thu, 10 Feb 2022 08:24:42 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=80809 ...]]> According to a recent study by URL Genius,a marketing company, the two apps that track users’ personal data more than any other social media apps are YouTube and TikTok.

In fact, the study found that YouTube mostly collects your personal data for its own purposes to serve you more relevant ads. On the other hand, TikTok mostly allows third-party trackers to collect your data — “and from there, it’s hard to say what happens with it,” reports CNBC. The report noted:

“With third-party trackers, it’s essentially impossible to know who’s tracking your data or what information they’re collecting, from which posts you interact with to your physical location and any other personal information you share with the app. As the study noted, third-party trackers can track your activity on other sites even after you leave the app. “

The URL Genius used the Record App Activity feature from Apple’s iOS to conduct the research. They counted how many different domains track a user’s activity across 10 different social media apps — YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, Telegram, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Messenger and Whatsapp. The data was collected from users over the course of one visit, before they even log into their accounts.

YouTube and TikTok got 14 network contacts apiece, significantly higher than the study’s average number of six network contacts per app. The study also noted that numbers might be higher for users who are logged into accounts on those apps.

Moreover, the study found that ten of YouTube’s trackers were first-party network contacts. This, in fact, means that the platform was tracking user activity for its own purposes. Four of the contacts were from third-party domains, meaning the social platform was allowing a handful of mystery outside parties to collect information and track user activity.

TikTok results were even more surprising: 13 of the 14 network contacts on the popular social media app were from third parties. The third-party tracking still happened even when users didn’t opt into allowing tracking in each app’s settings, according to the study.

Facebook is Being sued for $150bn https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/12/07/facebook-is-being-sued-for-150bn/ Tue, 07 Dec 2021 10:57:55 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=76173 ...]]> Facebook is being sued by dozens of Rohingya refugees in the UK and US. The social platform is accused of allowing hate speech to be spread against them.

In their opinion, Facebook promotes violence against the persecuted minority and that’s why they are demanding more than $150bn (£113bn) in compensation. However, the platform did not give an immediate response, even though it is accused of allowing spreading hateful and dangerous misinformation for years.

A British law firm which is representing some of the refugees has written a letter to Facebook. Www.bbc.com gave some information about it. The letter is said to contain accusations of failing to invest in moderators and fact checkers who actually knew about the political situation in Myanmar. Also, the company is blamed for not taking down posts or deleting accounts that incite violence against Rohingya. Furthermore, in their words it did not take appropriate and timely action, even with all the warnings from charities and media.

As for the US lawyers, they field a legal complaint against Facebook. They accuse the media of being “willing to trade the lives of the Rohingya people for better market penetration in a small country in Southeast Asia.” In an investigation by the Reuters news agency, there were posts that appeared, stating: “We must fight them the way Hitler did the Jews.” Another one said: “Pour fuel and set fire so that they can meet Allah faster.”

The platform has more than 20 million users in Myanmar, and it is the main or even the only way of getting and sharing news.  In 2018 Facebook did admit that its efforts to prevent the incitement of violence and hate speech against the Rohingya were not enough.

The social media site was hugely popular there. It seems, however, that the company was not aware of what was happening on its own platform. That’s why they didn’t actively moderate content in local languages like Burmese and Rakhine. But if they did, they would have seen anti-Muslim hate speech and disinformation about terrorist plots from the Rohingya.

Meta, however, which is now Facebook’s parent company, is trying to turn the focus away from the social platform.

Facebook is largely protected from liability over content posted by its users, under the US law. However, the new lawsuit argues the law of Myanmar, and it has no such protections.

By removing the count of dislikes, YouTube is trying to deal with its harassment problem https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/11/11/by-removing-the-count-of-dislikes-youtube-is-trying-to-deal-with-its-harassment-problem/ Thu, 11 Nov 2021 13:49:57 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=74551 ...]]> Since February 2005 step by step YouTube has become one of the most used sources of video content. Unfortunately we live in a society where harassment is a problem which needs to be solved somehow.

That’s why the social platform decided to hide the count of dislikes from the audience. We need to know that the dislike button will not be removed entirely. The count of the dislikes however will be visible only for the creators, which is YouTube’s way to deal with the social attacks and judgement.

Matt Koval, a YouTube creator liaison, said that after a research, YouTube came to the conclusion that the number of dislikes doesn’t have an influence on the total audience.

In a video, Koval explained that when all the views were visible at first, most of the users  came up with some kind of a game whose aim is to pump up the number of dislikes. In most cases the reason for all of that is very simple – a user doesn’t like the video creator and its content which may lead to a serious type of depression for them. That’s why this update was made in order to defend all of the video creators.

Facebook will Become a Metaverse so its ‘Software will be Everywhere’, Zuckerberg says https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/07/23/facebook-will-become-a-metaverse-so-its-software-will-be-everywhere-zuckerberg-says/ Fri, 23 Jul 2021 14:11:57 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=60908 ...]]> Mark Zuckerberg has said that Facebook will “effectively transition from being a social media company … to being a metaverse company”.

There is no specific definition of the metaverse, but venture capitalist Matthew Ball – who was recommended on the subject by Mr Zuckerberg in an interview ledge – to depart many features it could be: The metaverse is a space that is persistent, synchronous, spans both the digital and physical worlds, offers “unprecedented interoperability” and includes a fully functioning economy. It is intended as an “embedded Internet”, as described by Zuckerberg.

The Metaverse, in Zuckerberg’s vision, will be about “engaging more naturally” with behaviours that we are already exhibiting – such as reaching for our smartphones shortly after waking up.

“We have these phones. They’re relatively small. A lot of the time that we’re spending, we’re basically mediating our lives and our communications through these little, glowing rectangles. I think really This is not how people are made to interact”, Mr Zuckerberg said, adding that the technology should emulate “some shared sense of space in general”.

Mr Zuckerberg has made similar comments before, speculating that humans should be “teleporting, not transporting themselves” to different environments via virtual and mixed reality environments. This can happen through multiple devices, and while many people think of the metaverse in terms of virtual reality headsets,  Zuckerberg proposed that VR, AR (augmented, or mixed, reality), PCs, mobile devices and Game consoles stay in touch. He also said:

“I think it’s probably going to look like some kind of a hybrid between the social platform we see today, but an environment where you’re embodied in it.”

One of the benefits of this ecosystem would be that “If you go back 20 or 30 years, many people’s personal opportunities and experiences were determined by their physical proximity”, and this easy movement through virtual space can avoid such obstacles.

Mr Zuckerberg didn’t notice that, while much of the technology has been democratized over the years, there is still a substantial digital divide between demographics and the increased digitization risks that are driving them out of more critical services.

Facebook has invested in virtual and augmented reality, particularly through its Oculus Quest headset, because “mobile phones came about at the same time as Facebook, so we really had a big role to play in shaping the growth of those.” Didn’t get to play a role platform”, Zuckerberg said. Smartphones mediating users’ access to Facebook has been a controversial topic lately, with Apple blocking ad tracking on the iPhone which is a huge blow to Facebook. generates profit.

Current virtual reality headsets are “clunky”, but Zuckerberg envisions that we will eventually have “normal-looking glasses” – albeit an entire computer capable of “perceiving and mapping the world” in a five-millimetre-thick eyeglass frame. Creating is a “real challenge”.

Technological advances aside, one issue that will need to be addressed is regulation of the metaverse — and oversight is an issue that has plagued Facebook for years.

Zuckerberg also noted that a good vision for the metaverse is not what makes a specific company, but it must have a sense of interoperability and portability. He added that protocols such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Internet standards should be in place, to define how experiences will be constructed.
