The theme of this group will be Open Source Artificial Intelligence.

“AI is rapidly changing the way we work and live, and open source collaboration is at the core of AI innovation,” Stormy Peters, vice president of communities at GitHub, wrote in a blog post. “We’re seeing developers across the globe use GitHub to innovate and share openly at every level of the AI stack, from training frameworks, to models, to responsible AI and evaluation tooling.

“But building a successful AI business in the open comes with its challenges. On top of the time and funding obstacles we’re already familiar with in open source, the heightened expenses and ethical, security, and legal considerations are daunting. We see these challenges as a risk to global innovation and are hoping to help”, he added.

The GitHub Accelerator will run for ten weeks, and the program includes group sessions, project work, and mentorship. Program participants will have 40 hours per week, of which about 5-10 hours are live training, workshops, and homework assignments.

In this round, 10 participants will be selected to receive $40,000 in project funding, free access to GitHub products, free Azure AI credits, and access to the general Slack channel.

Participants will gain access to GitHub staff for security reviews, engage in Q&A sessions with GitHub sponsors, community members, and leaders, and receive an introduction to Microsoft’s venture fund M12, including at least one hour of dedicated time with them.

At the culmination of the program, a virtual Demo Day will provide an opportunity for participants to showcase their progress to the community, including GitHub leadership and venture capitalists.

To be considered for acceptance into the cohort, GitHub suggests presenting a project with a clear open source license, well-defined governance strategy, commitment from core leaders for project growth, a plan for fund utilization, and a strong emphasis on AI, machine learning, and AI infrastructure. GitHub prioritizes projects with an active and expanding user base.

GDPR Breach: Sweden Fines Spotify with 5 Million Euros https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/06/14/gdpr-breach-sweden-fines-spotify-with-5-million-euros/ Wed, 14 Jun 2023 07:44:00 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=107730 ...]]> A Swedish regulator has fined Spotify 58 million kroner (€5 million) for failing to properly inform users about how it uses the data it collects, Engadget reports.

According to the charges, the company violated the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The issue relates to the way the music streaming platform handles users’ personal data and customers’ access to the information.

While Spotify provides the data it has on request by an individual, the company has not been specific enough about how this data is used.

The Swedish Data Protection Authority (IMY) found that although Spotify provides users with personal data it processes on request, it “does not inform clearly enough about how this data is used by the company”. It also said Spotify should be more transparent “about how and for what purposes individuals’ personal data is processed”. The lack of clarity meant that “it was difficult for individuals to understand how their personal data was being processed and to check whether the processing of their personal data was lawful”, the IME added.

The regulator said it considered the issues to be of a “low level of seriousness” and noted that the music company had taken steps to address them. IMY set the fine based on these factors, as well as Spotify’s revenue and number of users. The decision on the fine was made with the help of other data protection authorities in the EU, given that Spotify has users in many countries.

7 Programming Myths You Shouldn’t Believe https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/02/13/7-programming-myths-you-shouldn-t-believe/ Mon, 13 Feb 2023 08:07:02 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=101074 ...]]> The ever-evolving field of programming and development is piquing the interest of people from all fields. Today, they rank among the most in-demand skills of the 21st century. At the same time, several myths, lies and misconceptions about this field need to be busted. They are exaggerations, false expectations, or perhaps figments of someone’s imagination, but they are popular nonetheless, and programmers are sorely bored with them.

Today, we have chosen to bring you a list of the most common myths about programming, presented by Analytics India.

7 Programming Myths You Shouldn’t Believe

AI can replace programmers
With the launch of ChatGPT and Copilot-like AI models that can write code, came the question whether the developers’ jobs are safe or not. While it is true that AI’s ability to write code is not questionable, it still falls short of the creativity that a developer holds. Moreover, the code can be prone to bugs, and since a human hasn’t written it, debugging it becomes an even harder task. Yes, Artificial Intelligence is a great addition that can boost the work of programmers, but human intelligence remains indispensable. At least for now.

Anybody can learn to code in a week
Though it is true that anybody can start learning to code, being proficient takes a lot of time, practice, and effort. Coding requires an understanding of various concepts and the ability to mold them for solving real world problems. The advent of auto-code platforms has made it easier for non-developers to build applications, but even these applications do not explain or overpower the nitty-gritty that experienced developers can circumvent or solve.

Programming languages are interchangeable
Different programming languages are designed for different purposes, and switching from one language to another can be a challenging process. While it is possible to learn multiple programming languages, each language has its own unique syntax and way of thinking, making it important to have a deep understanding of the language you are working with.

You have to be a maths genius to be a programmer
Mathematics is an important component of computer science and programming, but it is not the only factor that determines a programmer’s success. Though being a mathematical genius can definitely boost your skills to another level, many successful programmers have a strong background in logic, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, which are more important than mathematical prowess.

Becoming a programmer requires a degree
Many successful programmers have taught themselves and obtained their skills through online courses, workshops, bootcamps, or even on-job training. Most of the degrees in programming are most concerned about the theoretical aspects, or even maths. Some organizations may ask for credentials while hiring, but it all comes down to the skills and the problem-solving capabilities.

Programming can be done in isolation
Programming requires collaboration and team effort, while sharing a lot of ideas. It is one of the fastest-evolving fields, and keeping up with the developments and trends is as important as sitting and writing the code. Moreover, building relationships and learning from other programmers gives different perspectives, ultimately giving new ideas to solve problems.

Tim Berners-Lee Wants Us to Take Back Our Data from the Tech Giants https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/01/10/tim-berners-lee-wants-us-to-take-back-our-data-from-the-tech-giants/ Tue, 10 Jan 2023 10:11:53 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=98004 ...]]> The Internet has come a long way since Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web in 1989. He believes it’s time to take back our privacy, and we should, especially when we live in a time where the eroded principles of privacy are just a fact or reality that everyone accepts as “normal”.

Through their startup Inrupt, Berners-Lee and CEO John Bruce created the “Solid Pod” – or Personal Online Data Store. It allows people to store their data in one central location and control which people and apps have access to it, rather than having it stored by apps or sites all over the web, CNN Business reports.

Berners-Lee says that the main appeal of this kind of self-hosting is control and privacy, and John Bruce adds to this by noting that user data is not only protected from corporations and governments, but is also less likely to be stolen by hackers.

“I think we’ve all realized that the value of the web is embodied in the data available on it. In this new world where you look after your data yourself, it doesn’t live in big silos that are lucrative targets for attackers.”

Says John Bruce.

Inrupt’s platform is already being tested by the UK’s National Health Service and the government of the Belgian region of Flanders, which plans to use the devices in question to allow its citizens to choose how to share their personal data.

In October, the BBC introduced an experimental service using Pod devices for “viewing parties”, where multiple friends stream a programme at the same time. When the viewing party is over, the user can see the data that has been generated, including which programme they watched and who else joined in, and choose whether to delete or edit the information – or allow the BBC to use it.

In a blog post, Eleni Sharp, executive product manager for BBC Research and Development, described this method as a “radically different approach to data management”.

Inrupt has been operating since 2017 and has earned $30 million, and Berners-Lee says it will help shape the next iteration of the World Wide Web – Web 3.

“You’ll hear people talk about Web 3 and decentralization as being very similar in ideas and goals.”

said Paul Brody, Global Blockchain Leader at consulting firm Ernst and Young.

He believes Web 3 could change the way we use the internet.

Berners-Lee hopes his platform will give control back to internet users. He is convinced that the public is concerned about privacy and don’t want to stand idly by when web platforms have massive amounts of data and misuse it. In his view, what we are missing is empowerment. His desire is to get back to a situation where you have autonomy and you have control over all your data.
