Apple And Google Crowd Out The Competition With Default Apps https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/07/09/apple-and-google-crowd-out-the-competition-with-default-apps/ Fri, 09 Jul 2021 12:44:12 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=58530 ...]]> That’s the takeaway from a new Comscore study that ranks the popularity of preinstalled iOS and Android apps, such as Apple’s Messages, alongside apps made by other developers. The results show that the majority of apps people use on their phones in the US come preinstalled by either Apple or Google. The first-of-its-kind report was commissioned by Facebook, one of Apple’s loudest critics, and shared exclusively with The Verge.

Preinstalled services dominate when it comes to basics like weather, photos, and clocks, according to the report, suggesting these categories will be difficult for other apps to compete in. Defaults don’t win out exclusively, though: Apple Maps and Music don’t appear on the iOS list at all, and Gmail makes the iOS list several entries below Apple Mail.

The timing, as Facebook likely intentioned, is apt: Apple and Google are increasingly under scrutiny for how they favor their own services over competitors like Spotify. US lawmakers are currently reviewing a new set of bills designed to curb the power of Big Tech, including legislation that could potentially bar Apple and Google from giving their services the upper hand against rivals.

The pushback stems from how Apple and Google bundle their apps and services with their mobile operating systems in ways that some of their competitors think is unfair. The criticism is harsher against Apple, given that it more tightly controls the apps that come preinstalled on the iPhone and doesn’t allow developers to circumvent its App Store.

What to Borrow From Apple’s Business Model to Secure Your Success as an Entrepreneur https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/06/04/what-to-borrow-from-apple-s-business-model-to-secure-your-success-as-an-entrepreneur/ Fri, 04 Jun 2021 12:27:03 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=53469 ...]]> Now more than ever, entrepreneurs are facing steep competition. Add to that an increasing customer base that’s able to shop prices across numerous options within seconds on their cell phones, and you have a recipe for rising advertising costs and tighter margins.

Today, companies large and small are navigating their way through these changes with obvious or subtle adjustments to their business models. One such example is Apple. When consumers think of Apple, what comes to mind is the iPhone. However, behind the scenes, Apple has been developing subscription products and even changing the way it sells its flagship iPhones to bolster the most important component for any business: cash flow.

Here are three ideas that you can implement into your own business, and borrow from Apple’s success.

1. Offer a perpetual product or service to your existing clients.

What Apple has been focused on, and how this can help your business, is to shift from that transactional model to a journey-based one that continually maps to the ongoing or anticipated needs of the client, and is steeped in brand trust.

This results in a relationship where the customer doesn’t just come to the business when they need a finite problem solved. Instead, they develop an ongoing partnership with the business as a resource to help them in a particular area of life.

Netflix has modeled this well by becoming the go-to entertainment resource for movies and television, and they have seen their small, simple subscription model skyrocket to a $30 billion success.

One way to look at this is to simplify your business model. Instead of offering a menu of different products and services that provide different solutions, you can bundle them into a subscription service that makes financial and emotional sense for your customers, who get peace of mind with round-the-clock access as well as money savings in the long run.

2. Upgrade offers

Offer access to your existing products or services in an “upgrade program” where customers are on a payment plan that renews when they gain access to iterations or updates to your products or services.

Apple did this when it made a significant move to offer Apple Card, a credit card with a 3% cashback option on purchases made on Apple products. Without discussing the potential value of having this purchase data on their customers, this offers users the ability to pay for products over time, reducing the barrier to entry and increasing the ease and feasibility of upgrading year after year.

Additionally, Apple introduced the iPhone upgrade program, where users still buy the iPhone, however they opt into a plan where it makes sense for them to continue to acquire the new phone every year. This psychological hook is extremely powerful and it’s something you can offer in your product or service business.

If you provide services such as massage therapy or personal training, you can offer your clients an automatic billing program where they get a certain number of sessions included that would exceed the value compared to paying a la carte. You can set these sessions to expire each month, giving an additional incentive for the customer to use them, boosting the perceived value of saving money.

What helps the relationship most is that this approach also adds value by helping with the very benefit you’re offering — getting them to look after their body and stay compliant.

3. Support services

Look at how you can add a new level of support as a bolt-on to your existing offerings. Apple does this with iCloud and Apple Music. You already use the product you purchased, so adding on these subscriptions improves your user experience. With iCloud, Apple promises that you will never run out of storage space at a time when a rare, never-again moment would occur and you might otherwise miss out on capturing a photo.

If you are finding it increasingly difficult to attract new customers month after month, consider adding a subscription offer to your strategy. This is one of the best things you can do to stabilize your bottom line while helping you grow your business.

Take the time to look into at least one of these models, as the return on your investment is making a single sale that continues to pay month after month, year after year.

What we know about iOS 14.6 so far https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/05/20/what-we-know-about-ios-14-6-so-far/ Thu, 20 May 2021 13:55:31 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=51694 ...]]> iOS 14 was first launched in September, ahead of the release of the iPhone 12. New versions of Apple’s mobile operating system typically arrive once a month with new features and bug fixes. However, iOS 14.5 was a larger update than usual, and took about three months to arrive.

The latest version of Apple’s operating system, iOS 14.6, is now available as a public beta. That means you can download it, but it may contain some bugs, as Apple is still working on it before its final release.

Apple doesn’t publicly announce when it will release a new version of iOS, but there are some clues. Since the public beta became available on April 23, and releases come out roughly once a month, we expect to see the final version of iOS 14.6 sometime in May, especially since this is likely to be a smaller update. Plus, we’re expecting Apple to unveil iOS 15 at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

How can you download Ios 14.6 Public Beta?
If you do want to download the iOS 14.6 public beta and try out some of the new features (again, we’d recommend doing so on a device you don’t typically use, since there could be bugs), you first have to sign up for Apple’s Beta Software Program. To do that, go to beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram, and click Sign Up. You’ll have to enter your Apple ID and password, and agree to the terms and conditions. Tap iOS, and under Get Started, click Enroll your Apple device. From there you’ll find more instructions on how to do so.
Once you’re part of the program, you can go to Settings > Software Update, and when you see iOS 14.6 Public Beta, hit Download and Install.

How can you download iOS 14.6 once it’s generally available?
When it’s released, you should get a prompt telling you that iOS 14.6 is now available and asking if you’d like to download it. Or you can do the following:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Select General
  3. Tap Software Update

Your device will connect to Apple’s servers and prompt you to download and install the update. Follow the prompts to complete the installation. When your device reboots, it will be running iOS 14.6.
What devices will iOS 14.6 work on?
iOS 14.6 will be compatible with all the same devices as iOS 14. Generally, these include the iPhone 6S ($269 at eBay) all the way up through the iPhone 12, along with the iPhone SE ($99 at Back Market) and the seventh-gen iPod Touch ($140 at Back Market).

New features
We’re slowly finding out more about what new features iOS 14.6 will bring. Again, since iOS 14.5 was a larger update with a lot of new features, it’s likely that this one will be smaller, and more focused on under-the-hood changes. The beta download page says that it “contains bug fixes and improvements.”

  • Better beta tools

The beta versions of iOS 14.6 include a tool that lets app developers and public beta testers upgrade to an iOS release candidate without removing their developer or beta profile. Before iOS 14.5 went live to the public, developers could choose between upgrading their device to the iOS 14.5 release candidate or to the beta version of iOS 14.6. Under the Software Update menu in Settings, there’s a new Also Available section where you can find this option.

  • Hi-fi support for Apple Music

On May 17, Apple said that in June, it would add support for high-quality, lossless and spatial audio to Apple Music through Dolby Atmos at no additional cost. However, Apple did not specify if this release would be part of iOS 14.6, or arrive sooner or later.
High-fidelity streaming could help Apple Music compete with Spotify.
