According to analysis published by the Financial Times, the move comes amid slowing automotive revenue growth and intensifying competition, particularly from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers that are rapidly gaining market share through aggressive pricing, faster model cycles, and strong domestic supply chains (Financial Times). These pressures have made Tesla’s traditional EV business more capital-intensive and less predictable than in previous years.

Tesla’s leadership has increasingly positioned AI, autonomy, and robotics as the company’s long-term growth engines. The Optimus humanoid robot, unveiled as a general-purpose labor solution for factories and logistics, is framed internally as a product with a potentially larger addressable market than electric vehicles. At the same time, Tesla’s long-promised robotaxi service is intended to transform its existing vehicle fleet into a revenue-generating autonomous network, reducing reliance on unit car sales.

Industry analysts note that this shift represents a broader redefinition of Tesla—from an automaker to an AI-driven technology and robotics company. However, both Optimus and robotaxi services remain technologically and regulatorily unproven at scale, making execution a critical challenge.

If successful, the transition could help Tesla offset margin pressure in the EV market and establish leadership in emerging categories where competition is still forming. If delayed, it risks widening the gap with rivals that are already delivering affordable EVs at scale. Either way, Tesla’s evolving strategy underscores how global competition—particularly from China—is reshaping priorities across the electric vehicle industry.

During today’s GTC keynote, the CEO of NVIDIA, Jensen Huang explored the most transformative technologies of our time.

Huang presented a range of new NVIDIA products and initiatives, spanning VR, enterprise AI, cybersecurity, quantum computing, advances in automotive, and much more. 

Holo Skin is NVIDIA’s full-stack open platform for next-generation software to find instruments. He commented:

“Holo Skin applications can be deployed fully in instrument in the hospitals’ data centers, or a mixture of both. This allows companies to develop applications that require more computing than is in the device. Or to upgrade the installed base of devices, years after deployment. Holo Skin is a full-stack open platform for next-generation software to find instruments. Holo Skin is our third robotics platform.”

Besides Holo Skin, NVIDIA is also developing Mapping for autonomous driving. The CEO said:

“Mapping is a credible pillar of driving. It is the collective memory of the fleet and can be considered another sensor. A couple of months ago, we welcomed DeepMap to our company. DeepMap is an expert in mapping for autonomous driving.” 

 

He announced ReOpt – a software package combining local search heuristics algorithms and the so-called metaheuristics to optimize vehicle route planning and distribution. ReOpt taps algorithms, providing customers with road conditions, traffic, as well as route metrics to reduce fuel cost, carbon emissions, and miles. 

A variety of other topics were raised during today’s keynote. The conference is being hosted between 8-11 November. Topics, such as 3D Design, collaboration, and simulation, game development, Internet of Things (IoT), 5g, data science, and many more will be raised.

Existing investors NIO Capital, Eight Roads Ventures, and F-Prime Capital also participated in the round. The funding will be used to increase the production capabilities of its automotive-grade LiDARs, support supply-chain partners for mass production capabilities, and further expand Innovusion’s research and development efforts around advanced LiDAR Technologies.

Innovusion’s products are widely used across autonomous vehicles, smart cities, high-speed rail transit systems, and have been recognized by clients as a top performer. The company is dedicated to LiDAR technology research, product safety, and efficient cost structures.

In the beginning of this year, NIO announced ET7, its first vehicle with full-stack autonomous driving capabilities, scheduled to be delivered in the first quarter of 2022, which is equipped with an image-grade ultra-long-range LiDAR developed jointly by Innovusion and NIO, a key component of ET7’s NIO Autonomous Driving (NAD) system.  A model application in the field of autonomous driving, the LiDAR has a 120-degree horizontal viewing angle, ultra-high resolution, and the industry’s longest detection range, capable of “seeing” up to 500 meters. Innovusion’s unique “flexible gaze” function generates a more detailed three-dimensional point-of-view to better track vehicles and pedestrians while simultaneously maintaining high-resolution across the entire field of view, even in low-light conditions.
