The action was organized by employee advocacy groups.

Amazon said it respected workers’ rights to express their views.

Before the protest began, organizers said about 2,000 people had pledged to take part.

“Our goal is to change Amazon’s cost/benefit analysis on making harmful, unilateral decisions that are having an outsized impact on people of colour, women, LGBTQ people, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable people,”

said the protesters.

Amazon is currently looking to cut costs, partly in response to economic uncertainty that has slowed sales in many parts of the company, including its e-commerce and cloud computing divisions.

Since January, the company has announced 27,000 layoffs and reduced investment in many areas.

The company ordered employees to work in the office at least three times a week starting in May, saying it would improve communication and the company’s culture.

They accused the company of not accounting well enough for its carbon footprint, pointing to a report that said Amazon only takes into account Amazon-branded products in its calculations.

Company spokesman Brad Glaser said the firm “has always listened and will continue to do so, but we’re pleased with the way the first month has gone, with more people back in the office”.

He also said Amazon continues to strive to meet its 2019 commitment to be carbon neutral by 2040 and is on track to rely entirely on renewables by 2025.

Beijing Court Announced Bitcoin Mining Contract Invalid https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/12/16/beijing-court-announced-bitcoin-mining-contract-invalid/ Thu, 16 Dec 2021 12:51:29 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=76835 ...]]> China has declared all cryptocurrency transactions illegal and outlawed crypto mining activities.

The court of Beijing’s Chaoyang District heard a contract dispute over delayed returns from bitcoin mining and ruled that the service contract was “void”, according to a notice from the court On December 15.

Many crypto firms still keep engineering and operational forces in the country while touting services to overseas customers, though China has deemed all crypto transactions, trading and investment illegal.

The country began weighing crypto mining bans as early as 2019 and started to seriously ramp up enforcement in 2021. Virtual currency mining is “energy-intensive, produces high carbon emissions and contributes little to the economy,” said a September notice from the National Development and Reform Commission, China’s state planner, and such activities “should be eliminated.”

The Beijing court said that the signed contract,“is void because it undermines social and public interests.” As such, its related rights and interests “should not be protected by the law” and the parties involved “should bear the consequences” of their actions.

SpaceX Will Take CO2 From The Atmosphere https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/12/16/spacex-will-take-co2-from-the-atmosphere/ Thu, 16 Dec 2021 08:40:43 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=76816 ...]]> Elon Musk announced his rocket company SpaceX is planning to start a program in order to take CO2 out of the atmosphere and turn it into rocket fuel.

The billionaire entrepreneur tweeted that the technology will “also be important for Mars”. On Monday, Musk published on the social media:

“SpaceX is starting a program to take CO2 out of atmosphere & turn it into rocket fuel. Please join if interested”.

The statement came days after the SpaceX and Tesla founder was named Time magazine’s person of the year.

A “clown, genius, edgelord, visionary, industrialist, showman” in its piece – that’s how the magazine called him.

The Financial Times newspaper also named him as their person of the year on Wednesday.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was surpassed by Musk`s nomination as the world’s wealthiest person this year.

There is currently no further information on the carbon capture plans from SpaceX.

It is not yet clear how SpaceX would capture carbon and turn it into rocket fuel. Scientific processes do exist, such as the one used by Canadian company Carbon Engineering, which is making liquid fuel with carbon dioxide from the atmosphere which is then combined with hydrogen from water.
