transition – Devstyler.io https://devstyler.io News for developers from tech to lifestyle Tue, 26 Mar 2024 10:48:39 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.5 Memory-Safe Programming Languages Eliminate 70% of Security Bugs? https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/03/26/memory-safe-programming-languages-eliminate-70-of-security-bugs/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 10:48:39 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=120510 ...]]> The Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD) released a new report titled “Back to the Building Blocks: A Path Toward Secure and Measurable Software.” This is one of the first major announcements by the new ONCD Director, Harry Coker, who was nominated by Joe Biden for the position of Director of National Cybersecurity.

The report makes a compelling case for the adoption of memory-safe programming languages.

This new focus builds on the goal of restoring cybersecurity responsibility and restructuring incentives in favor of long-term cybersecurity investments. Memory-safe programming languages were also included as a goal of the Open Source Software Security Initiative (OS3I), which recently published a new report.

When using a memory-safe programming language such as Rust, Go, Java, Swift, and Python, developers cannot create code that causes a memory error because the language includes specific properties such as memory safety. When developers write code in languages that are not memory safe, such as C and C++, they may inadvertently write code that can cause memory access errors. Instead of the errors being caught at compile time and runtime, as with memory-safe languages, they end up in the final version and cause security problems, writes Jennifer Gregory, an author on cybersecurity topics.

Gregory adds that choosing a memory-safe language significantly reduces or completely eliminates memory-related vulnerabilities. In addition to improved security, memory-safe languages also reduce crashes and allow developers to increase productivity because they don’t need to focus on memory management issues.

The report focuses on getting organizations to focus on two specific areas related to memory-safe languages. In addition, the government wants to focus on creating partnerships with the technical community, especially engineers and developers, to collaborate on making this key change happen.

Although the use of memory-safe languages is recommended, the transition to them is challenging. Many software programs and libraries are based on inappropriate memory protection languages, and rewriting the entire database is often impossible. Starting a new project with a safe programming language represents the easiest way to transition.

Organizations can reduce attacks by rewriting only the critical functions and libraries that are most vulnerable to memory-related errors. Suitable languages such as Rust and Swift are interoperable with C and C++, making this transition easier. However, making the transition requires adequate developer resources. Organizations should start by assessing their existing memory safety language experts and provide training for both current and new developers in this area.

Tesla Stock Drops After Musk Appoints New Twitter CEO https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/05/15/tesla-stock-drops-after-musk-appoints-new-twitter-ceo/ Mon, 15 May 2023 09:10:02 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=106296 ...]]> Tesla shares fell on Friday after Elon Musk appointed a new head of Twitter, Investors Business Daily reports. The CEO tweeted Friday that he has hired Linda Iaccarino, head of NBCUniversal’s advertising department, as Twitter’s new CEO. Musk also added that Iaccarino will focus on business operations while he will work on product design and new technologies.

“Looking forward to working with Linda to transform this platform into X, the everything app,”

Musk wrote Friday.

Tesla shares, which rose early Friday, fell in afternoon trading. Twitter’s new CEO will begin his duties in about six weeks. Musk added that his role at Twitter will transition into the role of executive chairman and chief technology officer of the company.

Musk took over as CEO of Twitter on October 28 last year, buying the social media platform for $44 billion. The purchase was partially funded by Musk, who sold some of his shares in Tesla. That, along with his focus on Twitter, has alarmed some longtime Tesla stock bulls, as they believe the negative attention is weighing on Tesla stock.

The EV giant is up around 67% from a January low, but has retreated considerably since the end of March. Tesla stock remains below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages.

Tesla ranks fourth in IBD’s Auto-Manufacturers industry group. TSLA has a 59 Composite Rating out of 99. The stock also has a 20 Relative Strength Rating. The EPS Rating is 93 out of 99.

Docker Introduces Extensions with Docker Desktop 4.16 https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/01/13/docker-introduces-extensions-with-docker-desktop-4-16/ https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/01/13/docker-introduces-extensions-with-docker-desktop-4-16/#comments Fri, 13 Jan 2023 09:52:37 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=98317 ...]]> Docker has released its first update for 2023 for the Docker Desktop product, version 4.16. The most significant improvement in this release is the introduction of Docker Extensions to general availability, and the release also offers a number of performance improvements.

In this release, Docker Extensions transitions from beta to GA. The Docker Extensions feature connects the Docker toolchain to application development and deployment workflows. To make it easier to use Docker Extensions, the ability to search, install, and uninstall extensions directly from the search bar has been added.

With Docker Desktop 4.16, Docker Extensions and the Docker Extensions SDK are now generally available to all platforms and users.

The Docker Extensions feature allows you to extend Docker Desktop with debugging, testing, security, networking and much more. You can also create custom add-ons using the Extensions SDK.

Since its launch, Marketplace Extensions has expanded from 15 initial extensions to over 30, with more to come.

Here’s more information about extensions and enhancements on Docker:

  • Improved discoverability through search, categories, list of number of installed extensions, and more.
  • Addition of an Extensions Marketplace in Docker Hub to make it easier to search for extensions and images.
  • Create a tab for extensions in Docker Desktop.
  • Made it easier to share new extensions with a Share button.

Docker now enables analyzing an image for vulnerabilities to be up to 4 times faster – and use up to 76% less memory. These performance improvements, which will be introduced as part of Docker Desktop 4.16, can be of great value when working with larger (over 5 GB) images.

To perform the analysis, you must select an image in the Images tab. An analysis will automatically run so that the user can be alerted to vulnerabilities in underlying images and dependencies.

Additional changes are described in the release notes. Many Docker Desktop dependencies have also been updated in this release, in particular Docker Compose is now version 2.15.1, Containerd is version 1.6.14, and Docker Engine has been updated to version 20.10.22. A number of bug fixes have also been made.

Docker Desktop 4.16 is now available. Docker Desktop is free for small businesses, but requires a paid subscription for larger organizations.

Salesforce Plans to Lay Off about 10% of its Staff https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/01/05/salesforce-plans-to-lay-off-about-10-of-its-staff/ Thu, 05 Jan 2023 09:20:40 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=97665 ...]]> Salesforce Inc. plans to lay off about 10% of its staff as part of a restructuring plan, Market Watch reports.

The company will also divest some real estate and cut back on office space. The goal of the plan is to reduce operating costs, increase operating margins and drive “profitable growth.”

Salefforce CRM, +3.57% joins a number of other tech companies that have admitted in recent months that they have grown too fast for the current environment.

“As our earnings accelerated during the pandemic, we hired too many people, leading to the economic downturn we now face, and I take responsibility for that,”

co-CEO Mark Benioff said in a letter to employees that was also filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

On investor day in September, the company had about 80,000 employees.

Salesforce expects that it will incur $1.4-2.1 billion in expenses related to the plan, of which $800-1 billion is expected to be incurred in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023, which is underway. The majority of the total expected spending is related to employee transition, layoffs, employee benefits or stock-based compensation, Market Watch writes.

The company anticipates that it will be done with the staffing elements of the restructuring plan by the end of fiscal 2024 and done with the real-estate efforts during fiscal 2026.

Mizuho’s Jordan Klein, a desk-based analyst associated with the sales team and not the research unit, said in a note that the restructuring was a positive step toward helping to “rebuild investor credibility and trust and one that showed that Benioff “is not all about growth at any cost.

Flutter 2.10 will provide Stable Windows Support and more Performance Improvements https://devstyler.io/blog/2022/02/10/flutter-2-10-will-now-provide-stable-windows-support-and-more-performance-improvements/ Thu, 10 Feb 2022 10:17:03 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=80821 ...]]> The UI framework Flutter 2.10 will increase the number of supported platforms by including stable Windows support. What is more, the new release will bring performance improvements.

Now, with the introduction of Windows support, Flutter enables the creation of cross-platform apps that run on iOS, Android, the Web, and Windows, whereas Flutter for macOS and Linux is currently in beta, noted InfoQ in an article.

Flutter for Windows provides the same main feature set as on other platforms, plus the Flutter’s rendering system, Skia graphics engine, widgets, and more. Flutter apps for Windows can use any Win32, COM, and Windows Runtime APIs using Dart FFI layer which provides C-level interoperability, including a specific C++ platform plugin.

A number of Flutter plugins have been extended to work natively on Windows. These include camera, file_picker, and shared_preferences. Hundreds of Dart packages provide direct access to Windows APIs, such as webview, battery, serial_port, and more, without requiring the use of the C-level FFI.

Customers can create Windows apps that have a native look because from now on Flutter on Windows supports Microsoft Fluent design, thanks to packages like fluent_ui and flutter_acrylic. Flutter for Windows include three main layers:

  • the high-level Dart framework that provides gesture support, animations, painting, widgets, and so on;
  • an intermediate Flutter engine written in C++ which includes the Dart runtime and Skia graphics engine;
  • a lower-level C++ layer responsible for translating and dispatching Windows messages.

The Flutter 2.10 release now supports a partial repaint of a dirty region on iOS, bringing down GPU utilization from more than 90% to 10% in a few benchmarks. Image opacity handling, on the other hand, has become much faster. Flutter 2.10 includes a new type flow analysis implementation, which brings build times down by approximately 10%.

The new Flutter release begins the transition to Material 3, which aims to provide a more personal feel to UIs by enabling UI customization via advanced use of automatic generated color palettes.

Mark Zuckerberg is Rocketing Facebook into a Virtual Universe https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/07/28/mark-zuckerberg-is-rocketing-facebook-into-a-virtual-universe/ Wed, 28 Jul 2021 07:10:04 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=62012 ...]]> Richard Branson rocketed to the edge of space. So did Jeff Bezos just days later. Elon Musk has grand plans for interplanetary life, too.

But Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is one tech billionaire that’s not following suit. Instead, he unveiled his own futuristic ambitions recently: positioning his company as the center of the so-called metaverse.

The metaverse concept has been somewhat niche, presiding largely in the gaming world, until Zuckerberg pushed it into the limelight this week in an interview with The Verge.

He said Facebook would evolve from a social media company into a “metaverse company“. And Facebook’s Andrew Bosworth said Monday that the company is even building out a designated executive team to oversee progress towards the metaverse vision. It’ll exist within Facebook’s virtual reality branch.

Facebook’s VR and AR technology can currently “teleport you into a room with another person, regardless of physical distance, or to new virtual worlds and experiences,” Bosworth said in the Facebook post:

“But to achieve our full vision of the Metaverse, we also need to build the connective tissue between these spaces — so you can remove the limitations of physics and move between them with the same ease as moving from one room in your home to the next.”

Zuckerberg said he’s banking on the transition to occur over the course of the next five years or so.
