A few weeks before the start of Black History Month, Apple released a new Black Unity Collection 2024 to support organizations in the United States that advocate for the rights of black people and that support them pro bono.

With the Black Unity Collection 2024, the tech giant is celebrating the strength and resilience of black people. Black Unity introduces new means of expression inspired by the incredible spirit and beauty of the black community.

Black History

The first of February marks the beginning of Black History Month, which honors the great contributions of the black community to U.S. history. During the month of February, America celebrates the achievements of African American men and women.

Black history brings with it much pain, injustice and cruelty. Years in which black people were slaves, humiliated and subjected to rampant harassment. All those wonderful men, women and children who were blamed and fingered simply because of the small amount or lack of melanin…

The symbols

The blossoming flowers and bright colors in Apple’s collection represent Pan-Africanism and symbolize generations working together to tackle injustice and break down systemic barriers. The Apple Watch Unity Bloom watch face features a beautiful floral design that signifies an ongoing commitment to striving for a more just world.

The surprises don’t end there. The watch has a feature that is triggered when you lift the wrist – the flowers begin to bloom and fill with vibrant hues.

iPhone and iPad owners can share their empathy and support with the new Unity Bloom wallpaper for their Lock Screen, which features an outline of flowers that fill with color when the display is turned on.

Beyond the visible

Many traditions, endless talent, incredibly beautiful art, strength, spirit, energy… Words are not enough to describe how incredibly talented and beautiful black people are! And with the talent and creativity Apple has shown us in this new collection, they have proven once again why they are among the best.

Is Your iPhone Talking with Your Own Voice? https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/05/18/is-your-iphone-talking-with-your-own-voice/ Thu, 18 May 2023 11:51:48 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=106441 ...]]> Your iPhone could speak with your own voice and practically speak for you very soon, Business Insider reports. Apple has unveiled a new feature for its devices that sees the iPhone and iPad generate digital copies of users’ voices.

Another new service called “Live Speech” is expected, which allows users to enter a phrase and save commonly used phrases for the device to say during phone or FaceTime calls or in-person conversations.

Apple says it will use machine learning to create the voice within the device itself so that the data is more secure and private. The features listed are part of the company’s latest efforts to ensure accessibility. Apple pointed to conditions like ALS where people are at risk of losing their ability to speak.

“At Apple, we’ve always believed that the best technology is technology built for everyone,”

said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.

“At the end of the day, the most important thing is to be able to communicate with your friends and family. If you can tell them you love them, in a voice that sounds like yours, that makes a big difference.”

Says Philip Green, a board member of the nonprofit Team Gleason, whose voice has changed significantly since being diagnosed with ALS, in a press release.

It’s not yet clear exactly when Personal Voice will be available, but Apple says it will happen before the end of the year.

11 Hidden iOS 16 Features Everyone with an iPhone Should Try https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/02/09/11-hidden-ios-16-features-everyone-with-an-iphone-should-try/ Thu, 09 Feb 2023 10:00:54 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=100760 ...]]> Underneath all the major features introduced in iOS 16, including a redesigned lock screen and the ability to unsubscribe from emails and text messages, lies a host of lesser-known tools and settings.

These tricks are just as impressive as the popular ones, and can even help make everyday iPhone use more productive and interesting, Cnet revealed in one of its stories on the subject.

View and share saved Wi-Fi passwords

For some time, Apple has allowed iOS users to share Wi-Fi passwords, but only by placing two Apple devices near each other. If this feature didn’t work automatically, it wouldn’t be possible to just dig the password out of your settings.

To try out this feature, go to Settings, then click Wi-Fi and tap the little icon with information to the right of the network you want to get the password for. To view the network password, tap the Password tab and then use Face ID or enter your password to view it. You can then tap Copy to copy the password to your clipboard and share it.

Find and remove duplicate photos and videos
Maybe you’ve saved the same photo multiple times or downloaded a video more than once, resulting in duplicates cluttering your photo album and piling up extra space in your storage.

In the Photos > Albums menu, you should see a new Duplicates album under the Utilities tab. Apple scans all your photos and shows you any photos or videos you’ve saved more than once in that album. From there, you can either delete any duplicates or simply hit Merge, which will keep the highest quality photo (and corresponding data) and then move the rest to the trash.

While you’ll probably want to go through each set of duplicates to make sure they’re actually exact copies and not similar photos, you can also press Select > Select All > Merge to remove every single photo and video that Apple considers a duplicate at once.

End a phone or FaceTime call with Siri
Siri does many things. You can use the virtual assistant to send a text message, get directions, or play music – but one thing it’s never been able to do is end a phone call.

In Settings, go to Siri & Search and first make sure the Listen for “Hey Siri” feature is turned on. If it is, you should see a new option under it – Call Hang Up. Go into that option and toggle Call Hang Up. When having a phone call or FaceTime video chat, simply say “Hey, Siri” and ask her to end your current call.

Connect Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons to your iPhone
Apple has long allowed you to pair third-party controllers, like the PS5 Sony DualSense and Xbox Core Controller, with your iPhone and iPad to more conveniently play mobile video games like Apple Arcade Library, Minecraft, and Call of Duty. Now you can add another console controller to that list.

If you own a Nintendo Switch, you can now connect Joy-Con controllers to your iPhone or iPad with iOS 16. To get started, hold down the little black pairing button on the Joy-Con until the green lights start moving back and forth. This means the device is in pairing mode. Then open your iPhone and go to Settings > Bluetooth and select Joy-Con from the list. Repeat this step with the other Joy-Con.

Hidden and recently deleted albums are now password protected
The hidden album in the Photos app is obviously not hidden, as anyone can easily find it.

Thanks to iOS 16, you can now lock the hidden album. In fact, you don’t need to do anything to turn this feature on. If you want to check it, launch the Photos app and go to the Albums tab at the bottom of the screen. If you scroll down, you’ll see a little lock next to the Hidden and Recently Deleted albums. To view the contents of these albums, you’ll need to use Face ID or your password.

Copy and paste edits to photos and videos
If you use the editing tool in the Photos app, you’ll be happy to learn that you can now copy and paste edits, including saturation, contrast, and brightness between photos.

To do this, launch the “Photos” app and open a photo that has been edited, full screen. Then tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner and press Copy Edits. This option will only appear if the photo has been edited in the Photos app and not in a third-party photo editor. Finally, go to the photo you want to copy those edits to, tap the three-dot menu, and then press Paste Edits. After about a second, you should see the edits appear on the photo.

Bring haptic feedback to your keyboard
iPhone has long featured haptic feedback. It’s that slight vibration you feel under your fingertips when you’re trying to delete an app from the home screen or enter the wrong password on the lock screen.

If you want to activate a slight vibration for each key you type, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback and switch to Haptic. The sound option you see is the loud and annoying sound you might hear when you’re typing something and your phone isn’t in silent mode, so you can leave it off.

Pin your favorite tabs in Safari
Safari limits the number of open tabs to 500, and if you’re nearing that limit, it can be quite difficult to find the exact tab you’re looking for.

In Safari, if you press down on an open tab, you now have the option to press the “Pin Tab” button. This will move that tab to the top of Safari, where it will exist as a little preview tab permanently pinned there that you can tap to view at any time.

Use Face ID while lying down
If you’ve ever tried to unlock your iPhone while it’s in a vertical position, like when you’re lying on your side, you may have noticed that it doesn’t work. You need to place your iPhone in an upright position for Face ID to work. With iOS 16, you can finally use Face ID to unlock your iPhone when it’s in a horizontal position.

Copy screenshots to the clipboard without saving them
You don’t need to save a screenshot to your photo album to share it with someone else. A new feature in iOS 16 lets you take a screenshot, copy it to your clipboard, delete it from your phone, and paste it wherever you see fit. After taking a screenshot, tap the screenshot preview that appears, tap Done in the top right corner, and then tap Copy and Delete to copy the screenshot to your clipboard.

Remove more pre-installed Apple apps
Since iOS 10, you can remove some pre-installed iOS apps, such as Stocks, Maps, and Calculator-but not all. With the release of iOS 16, you can add three more apps to that list: Find My, Clock, and Health. However, deleting these apps can backfire and break support with other apps and connected devices, like your Apple Watch.

Which are App Store Awards’ best apps and games for 2021? https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/12/06/which-are-app-store-awards-best-apps-and-games-for-2021/ Mon, 06 Dec 2021 15:24:17 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=76122 ...]]> The 2021 App Store Award winners were recently announced by Apple. The best 15 applications and games were recognised as one of the most attractive among the users. The winners are developers from all over the world whose apps and games were selected by Apple’s global App Store editorial team. Тim Cook, who is Apple’s CEO said:

The developers who won App Store Awards in 2021 harnessed their own drive and vision to deliver the best apps and games of the year — sparking the creativity and passion of millions of users around the world”

He also added:

“From self-taught indie coders to inspiring leaders building global businesses, these standout developers innovated with Apple technology, with many helping to foster the profound sense of togetherness we needed this year.”

Which are this year’s winners?

The iPhone App of the Year is ‘Toca Life World’ from Toca Boca but when it comes to the iPad App of the year is ‘LumaFusion’ from Luma Touch.

The Mac App of the Year won ‘Craft’ from Luki Labs Limited. But if you are wondering which is the winner for the Apple TV App of the year – it’s ‘DAZN’ from DAZN Group. Last but not least, the Apple Watch App of the Year is ‘Carrot Weather’ from Grailr.

What about the games, you may ask…

The iPhone Game of the Year’s award went to ‘League of Legends’ from Riot Games. The iPad Game Award was given to ‘MARVEL Future Revolution’ from Netramble Corporation. As for the Mac Game – ‘Myst’ from Cyan was the winner of this one. The Apple TV Game of the Year was given to ‘Space Marshals 3’ from Pixelbite, and for the Apple Arcade Game of the Year – the award went to ‘Fantasian’ from Mistwalker.

Besides, the best applications and games on Apple’s devices, Apple’s global App Store editors called ‘Trenda of the Year’. The aim behind that step was to identify a movement that has a lasting impact on people’s lives.

So, who are the ‘Connections’ winners?

The first one is “Among Us!” From Innersloth. The application cultivated community through bite-size matches that urged users to talk — and listen — to each other via banter, bluffing, and teamwork.

The second one was ‘Bumble’, from Bumble Inc.

Bumble met the moment by adding and enhancing features designed to bridge the gap for users hoping to date, forge platonic friendships, and broaden their professional networks — all while fostering women-powered conversations.

‘Canva’ from Canva is the next winner which offers elegantly simple design tools and gorgeous templates. It helps its users tap into their entrepreneurial spirit by making design simple for professionals, students, job seekers, community leaders, and teams of every kind.

Who is next? Well, it is the ‘EatOkra’, from Anthony Edwards Jr. and Janique Edwards. The app builds a robust, user-driven guide to more than 11,000 Black-owned eateries that helps people find tasty ways to invest in their community.

Peanut, from Peanut App Limited

‘Peanut’ from Peanut App Limited. By launching social audio Pods led by experts on everything from pregnancy and menopause to relationships and self-care, Peanut is creating space for honest conversations on every aspect of womanhood at every stage of life.

This is not the first year when Apple has honored the best apps and games at the end of each year. To acknowledge the impact of the winning developer teams, last year, Apple designers began a tradition of celebration through meticulous craftsmanship with physical App Store awards for each winner. Inspired by the signature blue App Store icon, each award reveals the App Store logo set into the 100 percent recycled aluminum used to make Apple products, with the name of the winner engraved on the other side.

Apple now provides a new Set of Features named SharePlay https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/11/23/apple-now-provides-new-set-a-features-named-shareplay/ Tue, 23 Nov 2021 18:13:56 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=75323 ...]]> SharePlay is a new powerful set of great features for shared experiences while on a FaceTime call. It also supports popular applications such as NBA, TikTok, Twitch, Paramount+, etc. This gives an opportunity for all users who can now watch movies and TV shows, listen to music, or complete a workout with friends together on a FaceTime call.

SharePlay makes it possible for iPhone, iPad, and Mac1 users to share experiences with friends and family while on a FaceTime call – you can chat with each other, listen to an album together, etc.

synced media. With dynamic volume controls, audio from the streaming content will automatically lower when a FaceTime participant is speaking. Each participant in the SharePlay session streams directly from the relevant app on their own device, delivering high-fidelity audio and video.

Movies and TV shows can be streamed in sync while connecting over FaceTime with friends, offering a rich, real-time connection while watching the same content through apps like Apple TV+, MUBI, Paramount+, and SHOWTIME.

Users can bring songs, albums, and playlists right into their FaceTime call for a shared listening experience. With Apple Music, users can listen to a much-anticipated new album together or their favorite DJ mix completely in sync.

SharePlay introduces brand new ways to inspire wellness with family and friends. With the power of SharePlay, users can now work out or meditate together in Apple Fitness+, encourage one another through intervals with SmartGym, or wind down with a bedtime story together with BetterSleep.

With SharePlay, users can learn together despite physical distance. Kahoot! makes it possible to face off live in educational quizzes, Explain Everything allows users to chat over FaceTime while collaborating on a whiteboard, and Night Sky gives users a way to identify stars, planets, constellations, and satellites together.

SharePlay will keep the experience in sync for everyone on the FaceTime call. Photo Credits: Apple

Many developers have introduced entirely new ways to enjoy content in their app. For example, TikTok has added a way for users to watch a unique collection of videos together. Heads Up! fans can now play together even when they’re not in the same location. Cameo gives users a way to enjoy their friends’ reactions to a celebrity message when they see it for the first time. Popshop Live makes it possible to view shows and shop together. And with Apollo for Reddit, users in a SharePlay session can easily browse their favorite subreddits in sync.

Users can show off photos from a recent adventure, browse the web together while collaborating on a project, or teach a friend a skill while answering their questions right in the moment thanks to the screen sharing feature.

MacOS 12 Monterey Release Date, Features and Everything you need to know https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/10/18/macos-12-monterey-release-date-features-and-everything-you-need-to-know/ Mon, 18 Oct 2021 15:33:02 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=73494 ...]]> The latest update of macOS 12 Monterey is bringing a host of updates and new features to Macs and MacBooks, and Apple users are getting excited. The new macOS, which was announced at WWDC may not be out yet, but it’s already set tongues wagging by promising a substantial upgrade that most weren’t expecting.

Luckily, macOS 12 Monterey is expected to launch on October 18 (today) at the company’s Fall 2021 event alongside the rumored MacBook Pro 16-inch (2021) and MacBook Pro 14-inch (2021). As with its predecessors, it’s going to be available as a free upgrade, with its public beta already on hand for download if you’d like a head start on what’s new.

If you’d like to hold on until the final version of macOS 12 Monterey is released, which we would recommend when most bugs and problems have been identified and fixed by early testers, it is slated for public release ‘this fall’ so you won’t have long to wait. In the meantime, here’s everything we know about Apple’s upcoming macOS.

macOS 12 Monterey system requirements

The list of Macs that will be able to run macOS 12 Monterey has been announced, with Apple promising that “macOS Monterey will support the broadest lineup of Macs in history, including the latest iMac, MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini, as well as Apple’s Intel-based Macs”.

macOS 12 name: Monterey

Apple has announced macOS 12’s new name: Monterey picked due to it being part of Big Sur by the Californian coast.

macOS 12 Monterey release date

Apple had a fall event in 2020, where macOS Big Sur was released a week after on November 17. With the Fall 2021 event approaching, macOS 12 Monterey is expected to launch on or just after October 18.

With rumours growing about an upcoming M1X MacBook Pro, we may be seeing release dates for both at the event. As usual, this will be a free update for everyone with a compatible system. If you’re not sure if your Mac or MacBook is compatible, check out the system requirements above.

When will macOS 12 Monterey be available to download?

The final macOS 12 Monterey update should be available for download through your Mac’s System Preferences menu, or you can download it through the Mac App Store application once it’s released towards the end of the year, most likely after the Fall event.

In the meantime, you can try the public beta for Monterey before the final version is released. While we have a guide on how to download it, we don’t advise installing it on your main machine for now, as it could be prone to a few bugs.

macOS 12 features

According to Apple, “macOS Monterey comes with new ways for users to connect, get more done, and work more fluidly across their Apple devices”. From what we’ve seen, this is an update that will definitely appeal to people who have multiple Apple devices, such as the iPad and iPhone.

There are some features however that will only be available on M1 Macs, which looks as though Apple is already moving to Apple Silicon and leaving Intel Macs further behind.

Universal Control

This handy feature means you can use a single mouse and keyboard and switch between Mac and iPad. Use a trackpad on your MacBook and slide over seamlessly to your iPad.

You can also drag and drop files between iPads, MacBooks, iMacs and more. There’s no setup required, you’ll be able to just put your devices next to each other, and move your cursor between them. This could prove to be one of the most useful new features in macOS 12 Monterey.

There’s been no sign of it as yet in the public betas, but we are aware that it’s an update that may take longer to appear, similar to SharePlay which has already returned in the public beta of iOS 15.1.

FaceTime

This past year has made the way we work and communicate change in drastic ways, and video calls are now more important than ever. So, it’s good to see Apple bringing new features to FaceTime calling in macOS 12 Monterey.

This includes spatial audio support, so depending on where the person is sitting, their audio should feel like it’s coming from their position. There’s also Voice Isolation, which uses machine learning to eliminate background noise and make voices clearer and easier to understand. There’s also Wide Spectrum, which does the opposite, and means all ambient sounds are boosted, which can be useful in some circumstances where you need to hear the environmental sounds where people are.

MacBooks and Macs using Apple’s M1 chip will also be able to blur user backgrounds thanks to the Neural Engine, though this is something that has been part of other video calling applications for a while now, and doesn’t require specialist hardware. More useful is the ability to invite anyone to connect to a FaceTime call, even people using Windows and Android devices, and they will still benefit from the end-to-end encryption.

Airplay

You can now use AirPlay on a Mac, and use your Mac or MacBook as a speaker or video output.

Shortcuts

Shortcuts are also coming to Mac. These allow you to automate everyday tasks. You can set your own, or use ready-made ones. These can be triggered via Siri without using your hands, and you can import Automator workflows with Shortcuts. Shortcuts will be integrated throughout macOS 12 Monterey, including the menu bar, Finder and Spotlight.

Safari

Safari, Apple’s web browser for macOS, has been redesigned for macOS 12 Monterey. Tabs are now more compact, the toolbar is refined and you can use tab groups.

This saves and groups tabs together for easy access. Useful for people who end up browsing with loads of tabs open at once. You can name the groups, and they can be accessible across all devices. Make a change on a Mac, and the groups on iPad and iPhone will also change. You can use a search box to find certain websites, and the Tabs bar changes colour depending on what website you’re on.

Notes

The Notes app has been improved, making it easier to organize and collaborate notes. The Quick Note feature lets you write down notes from any app or website, and you can add links from Safari or Maps.

Multiple people can work on notes, and they can add their own comments. People’s edits can be easily found in the new Activity View, and tags can be added so you can easily find them later on.

Focus

The new Focus feature looks like it’ll be a powerful ‘do not disturb’ setting for Macs and MacBooks on macOS 12 Monterey. Depending on your current activity, notifications can be filtered out.

You can set your status so other people know you’re not to be interrupted, and if you set up Focus on one device, it will be mirrored on all your other Apple devices. It doesn’t look like we’re getting a Big Sur-like huge update, though. Instead, macOS 12 seems to be a release to fix up bugs and refine the operating system further.

Think of this release as more the Snow Leopard of macOS releases. Back in 2009, Apple made efforts to push the fact that it was a refined release and had no new features.

With a move to a completely different chip last year, it makes sense for macOS to be refined again to be even faster on the new Apple Silicon chips.

Apple Releases Software Update To Fix Pegasus-Linked Flow Targeting iPhone, iPad & Other Devices https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/09/14/apple-releases-software-update-to-fix-pegasus-linked-flow-targeting-iphone-ipad-amp-other-devices/ Tue, 14 Sep 2021 12:05:33 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=71060 ...]]> Days after heated controversy around the globe over Pegasus spyware allegedly tapping phones of human rights activists, journalists and even heads of state, Apple has detected a new zero-day, zero-click exploit called ‘FORCEDENTRY’ in Apple’s iMessage service, allegedly used by Israel’s NSO Group to install Pegasus spyware in devices including the iPhone, iPad, MacBook and Apple Watch.

A team of researchers at Toronto-based Citizen Lab, who have been investigating Pegasus Spyware, found the problem while analysing a Saudi activist’s phone that had been compromised with the code.

According to media reports, the cybersecurity watchdog organisation in Canada released a software update for a weakness that can let spyware infect devices without users even clicking on a malicious message or link. The researchers have advised updating the operating systems on their Apple devices in order to avoid their smartphones and laptops getting affected till the update rolled out by Apple on Monday is installed. Citizen Lab wrote in a post:

“We determined that the mercenary spyware company NSO Group used the vulnerability to remotely exploit and infect the latest Apple devices with the Pegasus spyware.”

Hours after releasing the fix, Apple said it had “rapidly” developed the update following Citizen Lab’s discovery of the problem. The company also noted:

“Attacks like the ones described are highly sophisticated, cost millions of dollars to develop, often have a short shelf life, and are used to target specific individuals.”

Citizen Lab researcher John Scott-Railton in a series of tweets explained how the Citizen Lab discovered the exploit.Marczak said:

“We believe that the FORCED ENTRY exploit has been in use by NSO Group since at least February 2021. According to Apple’s analysis, the exploit works against all iOS, macOS, and WatchOS versions prior to those released September 13, 2021.”

How Steve Jobs Contributed to the Creation of the Startup Chili Piper https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/09/13/how-steve-jobs-contributed-to-the-creation-of-the-startup-chili-piper/ Mon, 13 Sep 2021 11:32:34 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=70872 ...]]> When opportunity came knocking in 2009, and it was Steve Jobs at the door, Alina Vandenberghe’s career took off.

At the time, Vandenberghe was a 25-year-old software developer, working as an intern on the mobile product team at global news agency Thomson Reuters. Today, the native of Bucharest, Romania, is the co-founder and chief experience officer of Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Chili Piper, a meeting scheduler for corporate clients and their sales teams. Founded in 2016, Chili Piper brings in roughly $10 million in annual recurring revenue from 30,000 different clients, including names like Spotify, Airbnb and Shopify.

The 143-employee start-up has pulled in $54 million in funding to date, from investors like Flashpoint Venture Capital and Gradient Ventures, Google’s AI investment arm. Vandenberghe says Chili Piper is on track to hit $20 million in annual revenue by the end of 2021.

Plenty of start-up founders credit Jobs with inspiring them to take the entrepreneurial leap. Vandenberghe is one of the precious few who can directly attribute her company’s ethos to a personal interaction with the late Apple co-founder: All those years ago, Jobs selected a Thomson Reuters app she helped build for the launch of Apple’s first iPad.

Any young software developer would have taken that vote of confidence and run with it. But for Vandenberghe, a young woman in tech who grew up under a Communist regime, working with Jobs meant something particularly special. It was the exact type of mentorship she needed to find her competitive edge.

ABC News and ESPN Dropping Support of Third-Gen Apple TV https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/09/10/abc-news-and-espn-dropping-support-of-third-gen-apple-tv/ Fri, 10 Sep 2021 12:36:02 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=70363 ...]]> The third-generation Apple TV was launched in 2012. Almost a decade later, more and more apps are dropping support for this Apple set-top box. Now, ABC News and ESPN are joining this continually growing list.

As spotted by Appleosophy, both ESPN and ABC News apps will lose support for the third-generation Apple TV starting October 4, according to messages in its apps on the set-top box.

Both apps are owned by Disney, and this is why they’re losing support together. As for now, the ESPN app still lets users subscribe to ESPN+ or just let non-members watch free clips on the third-generation Apple TV.

For the ABC News app, although it doesn’t offer a membership it used to allow users to stream a 24/7 feed of ABC News. According to Appleosophy David Becker, “After trying that feature Thursday morning, it does not appear as though that feature is no longer available.

FOX NOW, YouTube, MLB, and CBS All Access stop supporting this third-generation Apple TV.

If you own this model, you’re still able to subscribe to some Apple TV Channels or just AirPlay your favorite streaming services from your iPhone or iPad.

On the other hand, if you plan to upgrade to a new set-top box, Apple launched the second-generation Apple TV 4K earlier this year with a new Siri Remote, HDMI 2.1 support, a better processor, and tvOS support.

Apple has a lot to get through this fall https://devstyler.io/blog/2021/08/23/apple-has-a-lot-to-get-through-this-fall/ Mon, 23 Aug 2021 07:58:55 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=67199 ...]]> Apple may host multiple product launch events this fall, reports claim, with new iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watch, operating systems, and services all scheduled for release.

Apple’s expanding product range

Apple often likes to position itself as a big company with an internal culture similar to a startup, but I do not know of any early-stage firms where the product matrix has grown so vast that they must actively consider multiple launch events.

It’s a very long way from Apple circa 1999, when Steve Jobs was able to describe Apple in a quadrant based on notebook and desktop, consumer, and pro product segments. While all of Apple’s products still just about fit in one table, the table is larger, and the company needs to schedule more time to discuss them all.

At today’s Apple, not only have the divisions between different quadrants become much more elastic, but the product range has expanded with wearables, services, a streaming TV offer, pro and consumer software, mobile devices and smartphones, with further product category expansion expected, particularly around health, AR, and transportation.

Apple also hosted multiple events last year, introducing the Apple Watch and new iPads in September, following up with the iPhone 12 and HomePod mini in October, and then blowing our minds with the first Apple Silicon Macs in November. That Apple now plans multiple launch events again makes sense, given how much it has to talk about. What do we expect the company to introduce?

Apple’s products this fall may include…

 • iPhone 13: 5.4-, 6.1- and 6.7-inch models as with iPhone 12. A smaller notch, faster A15 processor and improved AMOLED display. Expect cinematic video, photographic styles using AI to improve highlights, shadows, and so on. The device is expected to see strong demand and to boast more support for mmWave and maybe an in-screen Touch ID sensor.
 • iPad (Ninth generation): Slimmer bezels, larger display, faster A13 Bionic processor.
 • iPad mini 6: Slimmer bezels and larger display, faster processor.
 • iOS, tvOS, iPad OS, macOS, and watchOS.
 • 14- and 16-inch M1X MacBook Pro, revamped design, mini-LED displays, MagSafe and more.
 • Apple Watch Series 7: Redesigned with faster display and processors.
 • Third-generation AirPods, more like AirPods Pro with better audio technology.
 • A push behind Foundation and Apple TV.

The likely sequence might be:

September: iPhone event with AirPods and a push toward Apple TV.

October: An iPad event with Apple Watch and a push toward services, focused around health and fitness.

November: A Mac event, with a focus on pro apps and more insight into the company’s work around Apple Silicon.

Alternatively, Apple Insider speculates two events may take place in September, one featuring the new iPhone, another starring Apple’s other incoming products.

What’s coming for the enterprise?

While interest in the all-new iPhone is guaranteed, business purchasers will certainly want to look at the refreshed entry-level iPad and MacBook Pro.

For many, the new iPad with its faster processor and promised tight integration with Macs (Universal Control) will become a viable choice for deployment among mobile workers. We are already seeing mass deployment of M1-powered iPad Pro models, such as a recently announced move to equip all Delta Airlines pilots with these. For tasks where that level of performance is less critical, education and some enterprise markets may see the improved entry-level iPad as a viable choice. That iPad is meant to offer a similar look to that of Apple’s impressive iPad Air. Will it match its performance, too?

The M1X-powered MacBook Pros will enter an enterprise market in which Mac adoption is accelerating pace. Mass Mutual, ItalGas and Grab all recently confirmed major deployments, and they aren’t alone. Faster performance and industry-leading battery life will only reinforce that trend, and many executives will want to see what difference these machines might make to them.
