This policy shift is gaining traction among some businesses, emphasizing the traditional view that physical presence in the office is crucial for effective leadership and management. However, this move has also sparked a considerable amount of debate among professionals, as evidenced by discussions on platforms like Glassdoor.

The Case for 100% Onsite Work
Proponents of requiring managers to work entirely onsite argue that leadership presence in the office is essential for a number of reasons. Firstly, it facilitates direct supervision and more effective communication. Being physically present allows leaders to better gauge the mood and dynamics of their teams, potentially leading to more responsive and adaptive management practices. As one commenter on Glassdoor notes,

“There’s a tangible difference in the operational dynamics when leaders are directly interacting with their teams. It fosters a culture of accountability and immediate feedback.”

Furthermore, advocates believe that having leaders consistently in the office sets a strong example for other employees, promoting a culture of dedication and visibility.. It also potentially enhances collaboration, as spontaneous meetings and discussions can occur more naturally without the barriers imposed by digital communication tools.

Joke Center of Excellence Remote Work Managers

The text ‘I keep my “center of excellence” in my pants’ was posted by a user with the nickname Amazon1 on Glassdoor, during a discussion about whether managers and leaders should be required to work 100% onsite.

The Counterarguments
However, critics of the 100% onsite mandate for managers raise significant concerns, particularly around flexibility and work-life balance. The pandemic has demonstrated that many aspects of management and leadership can be effectively conducted remotely, without a loss in productivity or team cohesion. Opponents argue that forcing managers to return to the office full-time could be seen as a step back in workplace evolution.

“Requiring managers to be in the office full-time disregards the lessons learned during the pandemic about flexibility and the potential for remote management,” one Glassdoor user expressed .

The argument regarding diversity and inclusion: Remote work has been a significant boon for inclusivity, allowing individuals who may have disabilities or caregiving responsibilities greater access to leadership roles. By mandating onsite work, companies might unintentionally marginalize these employees and narrow the pool of talent from which they can draw.

Impact on Recruitment and Retention
The decision to enforce 100% onsite work for managers could also impact a company’s ability to recruit and retain talent. In today’s competitive job market, flexibility is often prized by potential employees, including those in leadership positions. Companies insisting on complete onsite work might find themselves at a disadvantage, particularly when competing for top talent against firms that offer more flexible working arrangements.

The debate over whether managers should work entirely onsite is complex and multifaceted. While the presence of leaders within the office can undoubtedly enhance certain aspects of business operations, the importance of flexibility and the proven effectiveness of remote work cannot be underestimated.

What are your thoughts about requiring managers and leaders to be 100% onsite in the office?

Microsoft Expands Data Center Capacity https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/04/22/microsoft-expands-data-center-capacity/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 12:39:49 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=124871 ...]]> Microsoft is looking to significantly expand the capacity of its data centers to serve the expected AI demand. The tech giant will triple the rate at which capacity is added as early as the start of the next financial year.

The boom in interest in mainstream models and generative AI is driving a surge in demand for additional computing power, as well as interest in training ever larger models.

According to documents available to Insider, Microsoft is preparing to address this by doubling Azure capacity in the second half of this fiscal year, which runs through the end of June.

Microsoft will triple additional data center capacity in the first half of its fiscal year 2025.

According to the aforementioned documents, the company is deploying a “record number of GPUs” to handle AI workloads, and more than doubled its total installed base of accelerators in the second half of last year.

Recall that Microsoft had intended last year to spend “many billions of dollars” building additional capacity in anticipation of the rapid increase in the number of customers looking to run generative AI projects.

By the end of 2023, Synergy’s data shows that the US accounts for 51% of global capacity as measured by MW of critical IT workload, Europe 17%, and China close behind with 16%.

The companies with the largest footprints are actually the big three cloud providers – Amazon, Microsoft and Google. They own 60% of all hyperscale data center capacity, followed by Meta, Alibaba, Tencent, Apple, ByteDance and other relatively small hyperscale operators.

OpenSSF, CISA and DHS Join Forces in New Open Source Project https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/04/18/openssf-cisa-and-dhs-join-forces-in-new-open-source-project/ Thu, 18 Apr 2024 13:18:12 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=124636 ...]]> Security-focused groups OpenSSF, CISA and DHS have announced they are teaming up on a new open source project to help secure software supply chains: Protobom.

The project is a collaboration of the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate (DHS S&T).

“Vulnerabilities in software are a key risk in cybersecurity, with known exploits being a primary path for bad actors to inflict a range of harms. By leveraging SBOMs as key elements of software security, we can mitigate the risk to the software supply chain and respond to new risks faster, and more efficiently,” said Allan Friedman, senior advisor and strategist at CISA.

Protobom allows companies to read data from software specifications (SBOMs), create their own SBOMs, and translate SBOMs into a variety of standard formats.

According to OpenSSF, there are many SBOM formats and schemas, which can be challenging for companies. The goal of the new project is to provide “a format-neutral data layer on top of standards that allows applications to work seamlessly with any kind of SBOM.”

“Protobom is a step towards greater efficiency and interoperability by translating across the widely used formats so that tools and organizations can focus on what’s important. It is a positive solution that helps shape a more transparent software-driven world”, Allan Friedman added.

OpenSSF also explained that by integrating Protobom into applications that link SBOM and vulnerability information, organizations will be able to more quickly access the necessary patches and mitigations to keep their software supply chains safe.

According to Omhar Arasaratnam, General Manager of OpenSSF Protobom will enable organizations to proactively manage the risk of their open source dependencies.

Amidst the billions of dollars being invested in AI technology and the confidence that tech giants are heralding towards it, the lay off trend in #tech business continues in 2024.

This past March, dozens of companies laid off employees, struggling with challenging market conditions. While the losses that tech firms have suffered since the beginning of January have been many times less than previous years, curbing inflation and an improving economic picture are not enough to end the layoffs.

Below you’ll see a list of companies that laid off employees in March, some of which have permanently suspended operations, TechCrunch reports.

ChowNow

ChowNow has laid off 20% of its staff following the acquisition of sales platform Cuboh. This isn’t the first layoff for the company, which laid off 100 people in 2022.

Nintendo of America

The company everyone knows is restructuring its testing department, at the expense of the employees it’s made up of. A Nintendo spokesperson told Kotaku that the changes will put an end to some tasks, but will result in the creation of new full-time positions. However, whether the hopeful plans for employees will come to fruition remains to be seen.

Dell

Dell has reduced its global workforce by about 6,000 jobs, according to a 10-K filed with the SEC. The filing reveals that the company has cut 13,000 jobs over the past year.

Synctera

Synctera also makes the list of companies that have entered the lay off trend. A Fintech Business Weekly report said the layoffs affected 17 people, or about 15% of the company.

ShopBack

ShopBack has eliminated 195 positions in an effort to become more sustainable, CEO Henry Chan wrote in a blog post. The layoffs affect nearly a quarter of the company’s employees.

Airmeet

Airmeet has cut 20% of its total workforce in its second restructuring in the past year.

Chipper Cash

CEO Ham Serunjogi announced in a blog post that he has made another round of cuts affecting 20 employees.

Textio

Texito has reportedly made 16% of its staff redundant in a strategic move to support its Textio Lift product.

Stash

The company has laid off about 25% of its employees. According to Axios, the layoffs affect about 80 people.

Phantom Auto

Phantom Auto has ceased operations after failed attempts to secure new funding, TechCrunch reports. The remote driving startup, which laid off employees last year, employed just over 100 people.

IBM

IBM also made the list of companies that laid off employees in March. This time, the company laid off its marketing and communications workforce. Earlier, IBM announced a strategy to replace up to 8,000 jobs with artificial intelligence.

Inscribe.ai

Inscribe.ai has laid off just under 40% of its staff, the company confirmed to TechCrunch.

Turnitin

Turnitin is another company that laid off around 15 people earlier this year, following comments from CEO Chris Karen that the company would be able to cut 20% of its staff again thanks to artificial intelligence.

Sorare

Sorare has laid off 13% of the people working in its New York office. According to claims from a source via TechCrunch, the reason for this is that fantasy sports platform Web3 is focusing on its Paris headquarters.

Project Ronin

Project Ronin has carried out a mass layoff that has affected around 150 employees. The reason for it is the winding down of the company.

Top Trends at NVIDIA GTC 2024 https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/03/27/top-trends-at-nvidia-gtc-2024/ Wed, 27 Mar 2024 14:39:01 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=120572 ...]]> NVIDIA showcased innovative technologies during NVIDIA GTC 2024 in San Jose, California. And although they all have different purposes, these technologies are united by one common element – generative AI, which is the center of attention.

Below you’ll see some of the tech trends showcased during NVIDIA GTC that we hear about from TechRepublic.

Advanced generation with advanced search

A technology that aims to reduce AI “hallucinations” or inaccuracies, advanced search generation allows the generative AI model to check its work against external resources, such as scientific papers or documents. RAG appeals to enterprise customers because it increases the reliability of the generated content.

“AI factories” to increase storage and computing needs

Many NVIDIA GTC organizations have described themselves as “AI factories” that provide enterprises with access to the storage and computing power they need to create artificial intelligence.

NexGen Cloud, which calls this service “GPUaaS,” is among the companies that will provide access to NVIDIA’s 10 trillion-parameter Blackwell GPU (Figure A) later this year.

Ten trillion parameter jobs require a lot of compute, and organizations are betting they can create a business model by providing just the right amount of compute power to customers.

During a preview briefing on March 15, Greg Findlen, senior vice president of product management for data management at Dell, shared that data storage must support high-performance structured data as well as unstructured data, such as documents, images and video.

Edge AI

Organizations that focus on edge AI also took their place at NVIDIA GTC 2024, with a wide variety: robotics, automotive, industrial, healthcare, mission-critical systems, and retail.

Many of these were powered by NVIDIA’s Jetson robotics platform. Jetson Orin’s NVIDIA Metropolis microservices allow developers to use API calls to create generative AI capabilities, making robots more reactive and flexible to their environment.

Private AI for enterprises

Organizations are working on creating private generative AI that can securely access their own data while providing the flexibility of a publicly available AI like ChatGPT.

During the show, NVIDIA mentioned Mistral AI several times, which provides a large open source language model that customers can host on their own servers.

Copilots can draw on company-owned data

NVIDIA GTC features a wide range of AI Copilots that can draw answers from specific, company-owned structured and unstructured data.

Judge Dismisses Musk’s Lawsuit Against Hate Speech Regulator https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/03/27/judge-dismisses-musk-s-lawsuit-against-hate-speech-regulator/ Wed, 27 Mar 2024 14:32:53 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=120560 ...]]> A US judge in San Francisco has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk against the Center for Countering Digital Hate. The NGO accused him of allowing an increase in hate speech on his social network X, formerly known as Twitter.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer ruled that Musk’s lawsuit was retaliatory in nature.

X issued a statement indicating its intention to appeal the decision.

Imran Ahmed, CEO of CCDH, welcomed the judge’s decision as an affirmation of his organization’s efforts to hold social media companies accountable for their actions.

Roberta Kaplan, a lawyer representing CCDH, said the ruling underscores Musk’s inability to manipulate legal processes to his advantage.

Musk’s statements on social media have also drawn criticism, including his endorsement of an anti-Semitic post on X in November 2023.

The judge’s decision is a blow to the world’s third-richest man, who has long portrayed himself as a defender of free speech.

Since acquiring Twitter, Musk has faced plenty of criticism for firing employees who monitored for misinformation, as well as from civil rights groups for allowing posts with harmful and offensive content on the platform.

What Can You Do If You Successfully Complete a QA Course? https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/03/19/what-can-you-do-if-you-successfully-complete-a-qa-course/ Tue, 19 Mar 2024 12:00:13 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=120146 ...]]> Did you know that QA courses provide many opportunities to start a career in this field? As more and more companies adopt agile development methodologies, DevOps approaches, and the like, the importance of QA professionals is becoming greater.

Today, successful QA professionals not only manage the QA testing process, but they can also excel in new career challenges ranging from customer experience to product management and enterprise architecture. Here are six innovative career leaps and ideas for QA professionals.

In this article, we will look at 4 jobs that QA professionals can work, according to TechBeacon.

Product manager

Product management is particularly suited for quality assurance professionals. They review and analyze software repeatedly and thus develop a deep understanding of software quality improvement methodologies. Today, the demand for highly functional software has never been more critical to the commercial success of companies, and having these skills in employees helps companies succeed.

Quality assurance professionals are often the people who are involved in developing new products and features. Thanks to the experience and knowledge they have, QA professionals can take any product to new heights of improvement.

DevOps roles

QA professionals have a holistic view of the development process, which can make them good release managers or engineers, product stability managers, or automation engineers in companies that take a DevOps approach to development.

“DevOps” requires a holistic approach to application development and delivery that ensures code reaches users more often, faster, and with higher quality. The QA element helps companies adopt DevOps approaches.

Roles in enterprise architecture

QA professionals exhibit an attention to detail and an understanding of independent review that is not always welcome in fast-growing software development companies, but makes them great candidates for enterprise architecture roles, where these very qualities are valued.

Quality management

It may not seem like a big leap to move from quality assurance to quality management. But for software testing professionals, it’s a way to move up a level in their career. According to quality management professionals, the effort is not so much focused on ensuring the quality of a particular version of the application, but rather on ensuring a quality system for all versions. Quality assurance professionals may also choose to take positions in quality assurance strategy that have historically been the province of non-technical professionals with business analysis backgrounds.

Calls for AI Regulation https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/03/11/calls-for-ai-regulation/ Mon, 11 Mar 2024 13:03:20 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=119770 ...]]> AI tools are becoming more widely available. The companies that develop them invest billions of dollars to make our daily lives easier, CNN reports. Along with the use of AI tools, however, issues related to copyright infringement also arise.

President Joe Biden, during his State of the Union address, urged Congress to pass legislation to regulate artificial intelligence. He added that it is necessary to prohibit AI from imitating human voices.

The president announced that lawmakers must protect people from the risk of potential dangers arising from the use of AI. The reason for his statement is the fake robocall campaign in which his voice was imitated and which reached thousands of voters who received a call about the New Hampshire primary election.

Authorities say this fake campaign is an attempt to interfere in the election through AI. Despite the potential danger of AI interfering with the election process, few expect lawmakers to be able to pass legislation to regulate the matter anytime soon.

All this does not prevent the big technology companies from continuing to attract users to new features and possibilities that AI offers.

Researchers and experts in the field of artificial intelligence fear the widespread use of AI before the area is regulated. Hundreds of experts have signed a letter calling on technology companies developing AI to make changes to their company policies and agreeing that there is a need for independent safety assessments of the use of AI.

“Generative AI companies should avoid repeating the mistakes of social media platforms, many of which have effectively banned types of research aimed at holding them accountable” wrote in the letter.

In it, the researchers also add that some AI companies are suspending researchers’ accounts and changing their terms of service in order to prevent some evaluations. The experts also say that “disempowering independent researchers is not in AI companies’ own interests”.

In summary, users should be aware of the limitations and challenges that may arise when using AI, for which there is still no regulation, nor sufficient information about what risks and harms it could cause.

How to Burst the Toxic Bubble in Work IT Culture? https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/03/04/how-to-burst-the-toxic-bubble-in-work-it-culture/ Mon, 04 Mar 2024 12:16:55 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=119515 ...]]> IT’S TIME TO SAY “NO”

Every one of us has been in toxic environments in both our personal and professional lives. Toxic partners, toxic friends, toxic colleagues, and why not toxic relatives. Toxicity is poison. A poison that slowly kills our mood, our productivity and our desire for anything. Breaking away from this environment and setting boundaries may be the lifeline you need. And although it seems so simple in words, the truth is that it takes a lot of courage and determination to say “END”.

But how and when to say “NO” to things and people that don’t make us happy, but on the contrary – make us feel bad. To those who drink the last drop of energy from us?

Yes, life is not rosy, although some look at it through rose-colored glasses from time to time to make it seem less complicated than it actually is. Every one of us experiences ups and downs. We go through difficult moments, but we also experience many beautiful and happy ones.

And even though finding your dream job and the perfect partner are very outdated clichés that a sober-minded person wouldn’t believe or wait for, that doesn’t mean we don’t deserve to find “The One” and be happy.

But is it possible that we love our work but the toxic atmosphere and culture of the workplace makes us feel nervous, anxious, stressed, and unproductive? To have your heart clench as you commute to work and begin to experience constant feelings of depression and anxiety that you carry home? When is it time to burst the toxic work atmosphere bubble before it becomes the norm?

Stay tuned because today we’re going to look at the TOP 5 signs of a toxic work atmosphere and culture and how to deal with them according to career consultant Ellie Bohemond.

Lack of boundaries at work

According to Eli Bohemond, toxic cultures often make it normal and glorify a lack of healthy boundaries, pushing you to prioritize work over everything else. However, this leads to a very serious burnout and severe consequences afterwards. In some companies, employees are often expected to stay after work to finish some tasks or answer emails over the weekend.

People don’t trust each other

In a toxic work environment, the lack of trust between colleagues is palpable. Bohemond gives the example of an organization in which the management team’s offices face the desks of employees, allowing them to monitor each employee’s activities. Or a work environment in which managers are constantly calling people on the team to check in on what they are doing.

The interpersonal relationships between employees

The dynamics between people are lacking in vitality and this is clearly evident from observing interactions in the workplace, says Bohemond. He suggests that one can recognize emotional well-being in the workplace by observing how people interact with each other. Are they exchanging smiles and pleasant conversations as they make their morning coffee, or do most people seem indifferent, eyes glued to their phone screens. Do they share humor and memes on Slack, or do their messages carry an undercurrent of disdain? “The overall atmosphere and body language of people convey the atmosphere of the workplace,” he notes.

There is no support for employee development

According to Bohemond, many people in toxic jobs have to fend for themselves because there is no mentoring or support to help them develop. This particularly affects entry-level employees – who are left alone in such a workplace, leading to demotivation and frustration – as well as employees from marginalized communities, who typically receive very little support to turn their potential into growth opportunities anyway.

No room for mistakes

It’s human to make mistakes, especially when you’re new and inexperienced. However, there are companies where it is strictly forbidden to make mistakes, whether you are a senior or junior employee. In such an environment, people start doing everything they can to avoid being blamed and to get ahead of their colleagues – for example, not sharing work-related information with teammates or passing the blame to colleagues if something goes wrong.

This type of culture can be particularly toxic. A constant sense of superiority and perfection would lead to nothing good except more stressful situations and depressed employees.

Now that you know what the basic signs of a work culture are, it’s time to share with you how to burst that toxic bubble and move forward without more stress and depression.

In broad terms, you’re faced with two possibilities: endure the toxic environment or depart. While it might seem straightforward, the reality is staying may be necessary, at least for a time, for various reasons. Perhaps an immediate departure isn’t feasible due to financial constraints, or alternative opportunities in your field are scarce. Additionally, your current company might provide unique benefits—such as remote work in an industry slow to adopt it, or a significant childcare subsidy essential for your family’s financial stability—that add complexity to the decision-making process.

Bohemond recommends looking inward and asking yourself questions like:

How do I react when confronted with toxic behavior?

What role can I play to change the situation?

What is preventing me from leaving?

If you still don’t want to quit because, despite the environment, you like the job and the conditions are good, then take a sabbatical and rest for a while. During this time you can indulge in time with friends and family, walks in nature and do the things that distract and give you pleasure. It’s also a good idea to talk to a psychologist about your condition, it can be very helpful.

Remember that the power lies within and the best is yet to come!
