“Due to complex environments and distributed engineering teams, enterprise customers struggle to efficiently and securely deploy and manage IDEs, AI tools, and remote environments all at once. These struggles naturally slow businesses down and result in missed opportunities,” said Brian Noll, VP of sales and global partnership at JetBrains Americas.

JetBrains IDE Services provides a central management hub for five different JetBrains products: IDE Provisioner, AI Enterprise, License Vault, Code With Me Enterprise, and CodeCanvas.

IDE Provisioner provides IDE updates as needed to ensure outdated versions are not used, AI Enterprise provides AI-driven productivity features, License Vault automates the distribution of JetBrains IDE licenses, Code With Me Enterprise provides pair programming, and CodeCanvas handles the configuration of the development environment.

“With the release of JetBrains IDE Services, we are giving customers a centralized way to manage their development stack at the organizational level and dramatically improve the productivity of entire engineering departments with the inclusion of enterprise versions of JetBrains AI, Code With Me, and CodeCanvas in the suite,” said Noll.

The service is available with an on-premises deployment option, but the company has plans to add a cloud offering as well.

Android Releases First Preview of Android 15 for Developers https://devstyler.io/blog/2024/02/19/android-releases-first-preview-of-android-15-for-developers/ Mon, 19 Feb 2024 09:45:38 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=118730 ...]]> Android has released the first developer preview of Android 15, which will include the latest version of Privacy Sandbox. The Privacy Sandbox is Google’s initiative to create technologies that both protect people’s privacy online and give companies and developers tools to build thriving digital businesses.

“Android 15 continues our work to build a platform that helps improve your productivity while giving you new capabilities to produce superior media experiences, minimize battery impact, maximize smooth app performance, and protect user privacy and security all on the most diverse lineup of devices out there,” Dave Burke, VP of engineering for Android, wrote in a blog post.

In Android 15, partial screen sharing support has been added, allowing users to share or save a specific app window instead of using the entire screen.

Also, the fitness and health tracking service Health Connect by Android is being updated with new data types.

The camera has also been updated with improvements for photos taken in low light and with improved flash intensity settings.

Enhancements in the Android Dynamic Performance Framework (ADPF) encompass a power-efficient mode tailored for hint sessions, dynamic adjustments of GPU and CPU frequencies to align with workload demands, and implementation of thermal headroom thresholds.

Developers have the option to test Android 15 on Pixel 6, 7, or 8 devices, as well as Pixel Fold or Pixel Tablet. Alternatively, developers can utilize the Android Emulator within Android Studio for testing on other devices.

ByteDance Starts Mass Layoffs https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/11/27/bytedance-starts-mass-layoffs/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 10:49:50 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=114756 ...]]> After two ambitious years, ByteDance is embarking on a massive downsizing in gaming. After two years of lackluster results, the games division, Nuverse, significantly scaled back operations, surprising many employees.

“We regularly review our businesses and make adjustments to center on long-term strategic growth areas. Following a recent review, we’ve made the difficult decision to restructure our gaming business,” a ByteDance spokesperson told TechCrunch in a statement.

The round of mass layoffs began today and many Nuverse employees are awaiting a decision on their future. It is unclear how many employees will be affected by the restructuring. The unit employs about 3,000 people, according to Chinese tech news publication LatePost.

The value of ByteDance’s spending in recent years on acquisitions is in the billions of dollars. This includes a $4 billion purchase of a Shanghai studio called Moonton. Earlier this month, Reuters reported that the company wanted to sell the studio and had met for discussions with another Saudi Arabian company.

ByteDance’s struggles in the video game industry, as well as its foray into virtual reality with Pico, raise questions about the broad effectiveness of its data-driven A/B testing approach that propelled TikTok to worldwide prominence. While ByteDance has accumulated an unparalleled wealth of consumer insights through its short video apps, the success of video games requires a more protracted and patient creative process, presenting a challenge distinct from the immediate satisfaction provided by dopamine-infused video clips. In contrast, competitors Tencent and NetEase are investing heavily in games with lengthier development cycles.

The extensive layoffs at Nuverse contribute to the ongoing challenges faced by the Chinese internet industry, which has been grappling with a pervasive regulatory crackdown in recent years. This has resulted in diminished business activities and workforce reductions across the sector, TechCrunch writes. The video gaming industry, in particular, experienced significant setbacks due to a pause in license approvals. Despite the resumption of the approval process, the sector’s recovery has been constrained by broader macroeconomic challenges.

“We believe the future of developer productivity depends on the continued evolution and innovation of projects like Backstage, and we’re focused on making this future a reality through contributions that help simplify, extend and accelerate the development process. Donating these plug-ins to the Backstage community is a reflection of Red Hat’s commitment to helping developers meet the demands of today as they innovate for tomorrow”, said Balaji Sivasubramanian, senior director of Developer Tools Product Management at Red Hat.

Red Hat emphasizes the advantages of Red Hat Device Edge, which encompass a minimal resource footprint, a uniform operational experience, flexible workload management, and simplified deployment processes.

Red Hat has rolled out Red Hat OpenShift 4.14, the most recent iteration of its platform. This update introduces the general availability of hosted control planes, offering a range of benefits such as reduced management expenses, quicker cluster provisioning, enhanced scalability, and increased security through the separation of control planes from workloads. According to Red Hat, the adoption of hosted control planes can result in substantial cost savings, with a potential 30% reduction in infrastructure costs and a 60% reduction in developer time.

In addition, the organization shared its contribution of five new plugins to Backstage, a framework designed for constructing developer portals. These newly added plugins are designed to integrate with technologies like Azure Container Registry, JFrog Artifactory, Kiali, Nexus, and 3scale.

Lastly, Red Hat introduced Ansible Inside, enabling developers to incorporate Ansible Playbooks within their applications. This feature caters to customers seeking to integrate automation into their applications without the need for the full spectrum of capabilities provided by the Ansible Automation Platform.

Amazon Enables Data Collaboration Between Different Areas of the Organization https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/10/30/amazon-enables-data-collaboration-between-different-areas-of-the-organization/ Mon, 30 Oct 2023 08:38:28 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=112850 ...]]> Amazon is releasing a new data management service to enable collaboration on data between different areas of an organization. The service, named Amazon DataZone, facilitates the seamless cataloging, discovery, analysis, sharing, and governance of data, promoting efficient interactions between data creators and users.

Under this system, data producers contribute structured data assets to the data catalog, subsequently allowing consumers to subscribe to these assets and share them with fellow collaborators, thereby fostering a more interconnected and cooperative data environment.

“Every enterprise is made up of multiple teams that own and use data across a variety of data stores. Data people have to pull this data together but do not have an easy way to access or even have visibility to this data. DataZone provides a unified environment where everyone in an organization – from data producers to consumers, can access and share data in a governed manner”, said Shikha Verma, head of product for Amazon DataZone.

In addition, users have the capability to establish data projects and environments, further enhancing their data management experience. These projects serve as a means to organize individuals, data resources, and analytical tools according to specific use cases, creating a structured framework for collaboration. Environments play a pivotal role in this ecosystem, serving as the fundamental building blocks that grant users access to the necessary tools and data resources for both data production and consumption.

Amazon DataZone also incorporates predefined workflows that streamline the processes of governance and access control. In the event a consumer initiates a data access request, the owner of the data will be prompted to review and approve the request. Subsequently, Amazon DataZone takes on the responsibility of facilitating access, adhering to the permissions previously established for the data repository.

Amazon Surprises with Employee Layoffs in Two Unexpected Departments https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/09/11/amazon-surprises-with-employee-layoffs-in-two-unexpected-departments/ Mon, 11 Sep 2023 11:36:54 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=110830 ...]]> Amazon will lay off employees from two departments within the company – that of the Alexa voice assistant and that of cloud gaming. The aim of these measures is to change the company’s priorities and efforts in these specific areas.

The Alexa division will undergo a restructuring that will result in job cuts. The move is part of Amazon’s strategy to streamline operations and focus on key growth areas. Although no specific details on the number of cuts have been revealed, it is understood that they will affect a significant portion of the workforce.

In addition to this, the cloud gaming division will also make cuts. That division, focused on cloud gaming services, has faced challenges competing with industry giants like Google and Microsoft. The layoffs indicate a reassessment of Amazon’s approach to the cloud gaming market and a reallocation of resources to other initiatives.

These developments are further evidence of Amazon adapting to changing market dynamics and prioritizing areas with the greatest growth potential. With its latest actions, the company aims to better position itself in the highly competitive technology industry.

While layoffs can be troubling for employees, they can also have their upside. The layoffs signal the company’s efforts to optimize its resources and align its workforce with its strategic goals.

Amazon is expected to make further adjustments to its organizational structure and initiatives.

Volkswagen Fires All Its Top Managers? https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/08/04/volkswagen-fires-all-its-top-managers/ Fri, 04 Aug 2023 06:47:01 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=109753 ...]]> Volkswagen will lay off all members of the executive board of its Cariad software division next week, Gadgets Now writes. The drastic measures are an attempt to resolve development issues.

The subdivision, which was set up under former VW chief executive Herbert Diess, went over budget and failed to meet its targets, contributing to Diess’ departure, with Oliver Blume taking his post in September last year.

Cariad’s supervisory board is expected to adopt the decision on the cuts at a meeting next week. It is possible that only the head of the personnel department, Rainer Zugehor, will keep his job.

A company spokesperson said it was analyzing Cariad and its projects.

No personnel decisions have been made yet. And problems at Cariad have delayed work on the latest Porsche e-Macan and Audi Q6 e-tron car models.

The Best Programming Languages That Need No Experience https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/06/09/the-best-programming-languages-that-need-no-experience/ Fri, 09 Jun 2023 08:23:34 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=107573 ...]]> Learning a programming language is hard, but choosing the right language can be even harder. Today, there are already a plethora of programming languages, and choosing the “right” one makes it even harder for the programmer to choose the right language.

What should you look for in a programming language?
In a podcast from Jane Street, functional language designer Richard Eisenberg talks to co-head of technology Ron Minsky about what they look for in a programming language.

“For a programming language to be effective, everything has to be selectable,”

says Eisenberg.

Minsky puts forth the idea that good language is “pay-as-you-go,” in the sense that it has a low barrier to entry, but gets harder as you try to solve more and more complex problems.

To make the difficult process of making the right choice easier, today we’ve chosen to introduce you to some of the best programming languages you can learn easily without the need for experience. About them efinancialcareers informs us.

The Best Programming Languages That Need No Experience

Python
For the indecisive coder or whoever wants the best chance at a job, Python is the obvious choice. The number one ranked language on the TIOBE index is incredibly popular for a simple reason: it’s easy to learn and adaptable.

When non-technical staff are asking to learn programming in finance, they’re asking to learn python. It’s the backbone of systems for companies across the buy-side and sell-side.

Python’s various libraries easily adapt key aspects of other languages to fit whatever mold you set for it.

Clojure
For hipsters looking to learn the language of tomorrow, Clojure is a great choice. It is the highest paid programming language according to the stack overflow survey, though jobs are much harder to find given its niche nature.

Another factor that makes it perfect for beginners is its unorthodox approach to syntax. The language doesn’t work quite the same as others, meaning a developer stuck in their ways with a previous language would have a harder time learning it than a fresh face.

Haskell
For the more scientifically inclined and experimental in nature, Haskell is a highly customizable language you can get to work for you.

Eisenberg of Jane Street is a huge proponent of it, having spent much of his academic career as an open-source contributor to it. “There are lots of different things you could turn on and off” he says, “so there isn’t one Haskell or two Haskells, but there’s like ten thousand different Haskells

Rust
If Clojure is the language of tomorrow, Rust is the language of today. It’s recently cracked into the top 20 of the TIOBE index and has a loyal following for its attempts to make low level code effective and attractive.

C++ is the industry standard at low-level, but Rust is far more enjoyable to code with and safer from crashing. It doesn’t have nearly the same scope for employability as C++, however. On eFinancialCareers there are currently just 31 openings for Rust engineers. Interestingly, much of these are in crypto.

DOJ Accuses Google of Deleting Evidence in Their Case https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/02/24/doj-accuses-google-of-deleting-evidence-in-their-case/ Fri, 24 Feb 2023 09:21:54 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=102061 ...]]> Under federal law, Google was apparently required to keep records of written text.

The Justice Department accuses Google’s team of routinely destroying internal messaging chats that the company is required to keep under federal rules for purposes of an antitrust lawsuit.

Google faces not one, but several such lawsuits filed by the Justice Department and several states. This particular case relates to the lawsuit the department filed back in 2020 for “illegally maintaining monopolies” around search and related ads, Engadget wrote on the subject.

The DOJ filing said company employees typically used its internal chat, which was set to delete history every 24 hours, to discuss “material and sensitive business matters.”

Google, however, denies the Justice Department’s allegations. A spokesman told The Wall Street Journal:

“Our teams have worked diligently for years to respond to inquiries and lawsuits. In fact, we have produced over 4 million documents in this case alone, and millions more to regulators around the world.”

Apparently, the agency had expected Google to change the chat history setting in 2019, when the company “reasonably anticipated [the] litigation,” but left the decision up to individual employees. Only a few people on the team felt their chat histories were relevant to the lawsuit and kept theirs for the court, and Google continued to delete most people’s chats even after the lawsuit was filed.

Meta Verified, a Paid Verification Service for Facebook and Instagram, Will Be Released Soon https://devstyler.io/blog/2023/02/20/meta-verified-a-paid-verification-service-for-facebook-and-instagram-will-be-released-soon/ Mon, 20 Feb 2023 10:45:11 +0000 https://devstyler.io/?p=101714 ...]]> The subscription will begin rolling out next week.

The rumors were true: Facebook’s parent company Meta is preparing to launch a Twitter Blue-like subscription service called Meta Verified. On Sunday morning, Mark Zuckerberg took to his newly launched broadcast channel to share the news.

He said the subscription service will give users a blue badge, additional impersonation protection, and direct access to customer service.

“This feature is about enhancing the authenticity and security of our services.”

Zuckerberg said

He added that Meta will test the subscription first in Australia and New Zealand before rolling it out to other countries. Meta Verified will cost $15 per month when users subscribe through the company’s iOS and Android apps. On the web, where app store commissions don’t apply, the service will cost US$12 per month. The subscription will cover Instagram and Facebook accounts, Engadget wrote on the subject.

Users will have to meet certain eligibility requirements before they can sign up for Meta Verified. Specifically, the company told Engadget that the subscription will only be available to users aged 18 or older.

Meta will also require potential subscribers to share a government-issued ID that matches the name and profile picture on their Facebook or Instagram account. Once verified, you can’t change your account name, username, date of birth or photo without going through the verification process again. Accounts that were verified prior to today’s announcement due to their notoriety will remain verified.
