“I have no plans to adjust the Prime team,” Jamil Ghani said during a visit to the Netherlands for an internal conference.

Amazon cut hundreds of jobs at Prime Video last month, explaining that it was taking those measures to cut costs. At Twitch, 35% of jobs were cut, which is about 500 employees.

Maintaining a streaming platform is expensive, and Twitch still doesn’t make enough.

Last year, the company suffered increasingly large job cuts – 18,000 in January and another 9,000 in March.

“There has been generous support from all team members around the world and many people on the Prime team have returned to Amazon in other roles. The team has been very supportive, including myself,” Jamil Ghani said.

He adds that the company finds it difficult to lay off employees and it is the last thing it wants to resort to, but sometimes circumstances do not allow any other choice.

In the last quarter of last year, the company employed more than 1.5 million people. That’s 1% fewer employees than in the final three months of 2022.

In the Netherlands, Amazon officials said the tech company had about 1,250 employees in August, including at its Dutch headquarters in Amsterdam. Amazon says no jobs have been lost at Prime in the Netherlands.

However, Amazon is not the only major company to cut many jobs recently to save costs. Tech giant Microsoft, for example, laid off 1,900 people within the company’s video game division.

eBay also eliminated about 9% of its jobs, which is about 1,000 employees.

The Developer_Direct will not contain new details on upcoming Activision Blizzard games.

“I know many of you are wondering why this is happening. Over the last year, we’ve been working to build a more sustainable business so that Twitch will be here for the long run and throughout the year we have cut costs and made many decisions to be more efficient,” Clancy wrote.

“Unfortunately, despite these efforts, it has become clear that our organization is still meaningfully larger than it needs to be given the size of our business. Last year we paid out over $1 billion to streamers. So while the Twitch business remains strong, for some time now the organization has been sized based upon where we optimistically expect our business to be in 3 or more years, not where we’re at today”, he continued.

In 2014, Amazon acquired Twitch for nearly $1 billion. Following Amazon’s purchase of Twitch, the unit was largely not a priority for the tech giant, despite offering Prime subscribers perks on the live streaming platform, such as free games.

In March last year, Twitch laid off about 400 employees, and last October it laid off several employees in its customer-facing division.

The organization has experienced leadership changes, with Emmett Shear, the longstanding CEO, stepping down in March and passing the reins to Clancy, who had served as Twitch’s president. Additionally, the company witnessed departures from its Chief Customer Officer, Doug Scott, announced late last year, and Chief Content Officer, Laura Lee, who recently announced her exit.

Furthermore, Amazon has recently implemented its most extensive workforce reduction in history, with a staggering 27,000 employees laid off since 2022. These layoffs have been consistent, with the latest announcements affecting the Prime Video and MGM Studios units made on Wednesday.

These are the latest cuts in the gaming industry in 2023, which has seen around 6,500 jobs axed.

“After our initial restructuring in April, it became clear that we needed to focus our resources even more on the areas that are growing with the highest potential to drive our business forward,” wrote Amazon Games vice president Christoph Hartmann.

But he also said the firm was recruiting for other positions in its gaming division.

It comes amid a slew of cuts across the wider tech industry in 2023, with Amazon itself having cut more than 25,000 jobs.

The latest cuts are focused on Amazon’s highly profitable cloud services and advertising divisions, which were once considered untouchable until economic woes forced business customers to check their spending.

The layoffs will also affect Amazon’s Twitch streaming unit. Dan Clancy, who was named Twitch’s CEO last week, said the platform will lay off more than 400 employees.

In a note to staff that Amazon posted online, its CEO Andy Jassy said the decision stemmed from an ongoing analysis of priorities and uncertainty about the economy.

“Some may ask why we didn’t announce these role reductions with the ones we announced a couple months ago,” he wrote. The short answer is that not all of the teams were done with their analyses in the late fall”,

said Andy Jassy.

Last month, Amazon said operating profit may continue to decline in the current quarter, hit by the financial impact of consumers and cloud customers reining in spending.

“None of these cuts should be happening. Jaci decided to do them to boost Amazon’s profit.

The Athens Coalition, a group of workers and activists that has criticized Amazon for its decisions, said in a statement.

In recent months, the company has cut or shut down entire services, such as virtual primary care for employers.
