Generative artificial intelligence is absolutely everywhere right now, so it’s no surprise that Spotify is using it in its latest feature, simply called “DJ.” It’s a new way to instantly launch a personalized selection of playable music that combines Spotify’s well-known personalization tools found in playlists like Discover Weekly, as well as the content that fills your home screen, with some AI tricks.

DJ is a personalized AI guide that knows users and their music taste so well that it can pick and choose what to recommend. This feature, which is being introduced in beta for the first time, will provide selected music along with commentary around the songs and artists that the AI thinks will appeal to users, in a stunningly realistic voice.

If you don’t like what you’re currently listening to, just tap the DJ button and it will change it. The more you listen and tell the DJ what you like (and don’t like), the better his recommendations become.

How the AI DJ works

The DJ knows the preferences so well that he’ll scan the latest releases he knows the user will like, or bring them back to the nostalgic playlist you listened to last year. Never before has listening been so personal for any user, thanks to the powerful combination of:

  • Artificial Intelligence generation through the use of OpenAI technology.
  • A dynamic AI voice platform from company-acquired Sonantic that brings stunningly realistic voices to life from text.
  • Spotify’s personalization technology that gives you a set of music recommendations based on what we know you like.

Spotify does nothing different than what it already does: it analyzes your listening history and finds stuff it knows you like, and stuff it thinks you’ll like. But their new feature is definitely interesting and modern for users of the platform.
