Google, along with a consortium of major commerce players, has introduced an open-source standard called the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), aimed at providing a common framework for agentic commerce workflows.
UCP defines interoperable interfaces and shared primitives that enable software developers to build commerce applications and services that communicate consistently across platforms, systems, and vendor ecosystems. This initiative reflects a growing trend toward standardization in development contexts where AI agents and autonomous workflows are increasingly central to the user experience and backend automation.
